Hall, Tom T. - Old Dogs, Children & Watermelon Wine Lyrics

"How old do you think I am? " he said.
I said, well, I didn't know.
He said, "I turned 65 about 11 months ago."

I was sittin' in Miami pourin' blended whiskey down
When this old gray black gentleman was cleanin' up the lounge

There wasn't anyone around 'cept this old man and me
The guy who ran the bar was watchin' "ironsides" on tv
Uninvited, he sat down and opened up his mind
On old dogs and children and watermelon wine

"Ever had a drink of watermelon wine? " he asked
He told me all about it, though I didn't answer back
"Ain't but three things in this world that's worth a solitary dime,
But old dogs and children and watermelon wine."

He said, "women think about they-selves, when menfolk ain't around.
And friends are hard to find when they discover that you're down."
He said, "I tried it all when I was young and in my natural prime;
Now it's old dogs and children and watermelon wine."

"Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes;
God bless little children while they're still too young to hate."
When he moved away I found my pen and copied down that line
'Bout old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

I had to catch a plane up to Atlanta that next day
As I left for my room I saw him pickin' up my change
That night I dreamed in peaceful sleep of shady summertime
Of old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

Notice how Ken Burn's smartly ended his country music history BEFORE it ever got to the Taylor Swift era? Smart guy. Real country music isn't made much anymore.

Mr. Hall, you are still amazing! Your music has always spoken to me and gives me memories of my Dad and my Grandpa who had a farm in Missouri. God bless you sir and thank you so much for being a big part of the soundtrack of my life! And THIS is Country Music... not the new stuff they sing now. The new stuff doesn't teach you lessons or touch your heart like this song! There is also no reference of sex, or drunkenness, drugs, etc. Why can't we go back to songs and artists like this that teaches us about life, we can be proud of and even children can listen to. God Bless you Mr. Hall!

    Classic

  21. m.... ....

Not that anyone cares but Tom T. Hall was my first favorite country singer back in the late 60's and early 70's. I consider him a living legend. On Long Island, I heard his songs on a country music station out of NYC- what was it, WHN? I always enjoyed his snippets of Kentucky life, he caught it all, what a songwriter.

  22. m.... ....

This must be his last performance. I never heard him live before. He was-and is- a great one!

  23. J.... D....

    Great Song

Ken Burns Never mentions Tom T Hall.
Either I missed that part of the film twice that I watched it or Ken Burns missed the nail.

  28. D.... M....

A performer of this caliber doesn't have to twerk, rub his rear end on people, grab their crotch or jump around acting like a fool. They stand and sing with such talent and heartfelt emotion that they bring up memories from your past, the good memories along with the bad. Not everyone has the ability to appreciate their talent certainly not young people of today listening to garbage like rap. Too bad. Thanks Tom T.

Back in the Day... The hammers and saws all went quiet, when ole Tom started singing this. We all knew that day was coming

  42. J.... F....

I guess the greatest compliment I could pay Tom T. Hall is that he's an instantly recognisable and loved artist to even those, like me, who aren't rusted on country music fans. And what a magnificent legacy he has left the world of music. Bless him, from Australia.

  43. D.... S....

    Fantastic

  44. M.... D....

3:50 if you'd like to skip the introduction :)

    M.... D....

Michael DaRosa the introduction was very interesting to me because i never knew that this song was based on a true to life experience.

  45. M.... ....

A REAL country singer from back when I was boy. My father played him and the likes of him when i was a child of the 70's. Today's country is just another form of top-40 garbage.

  46. S.... N....

I don't matter if he's a little out of of tune just listen to the lyrics kids! You may learn a little something

  47. E.... B....

One of the greatest story tellers of all time.

  55. G.... P....

Love these good old country music songs. Not the same now a days. Keep it going. Canada

  56. J.... K....

What kind of a tard could possibly thumb this down. Speaks a great deal of this selfish society we’re enveloped in

  57. J.... D....

It does not get any better!

  58. 1.... ....

They use the term "artist" a little too freely today referring to singers. This guy was an Artist!!!

  59. M.... ....

One of my all time favorites. I played the hell out of this on the jukebox in 1973. Almost wore it out. Love it.

  65. J.... P....

I think you probably have had to experience a big part of your life to really appreciate this song. As a young man when I first heard it, I really didn’t get it. Now at 68, I completely get it. Great lesson that we all eventually learn to appreciate.

It's a true shame that REAL entertainers like Tom T are so few and far between these days!

  88. E.... F....

Tom T the greatest storyteller of all time...

  89. j.... d....

I can't hear without crying, nor can anyone in my family...We understand the loneliness behind it and how it's the simple things that get us through and how to appreciate a little kindness from a stranger and joy in childhood innocence.
