Hall, Tom T. - I Hope It Rains At My Funeral Lyrics

Can't send no fourteen year-old boy to no school
The only thing I learned in the years I worked on my daddy's farm
Was, "son, you better get them crops in when it turns cool."

In the magazines, I saw the naked women
I heard about the drinkin' and the bars
If my daddy could've caught me, he'd a-killed me
He said, "you might run, boy, but you ain't gonna get far."

I hit town or you might say that it hit me
Next mornin' there were things I knew more about

The woman who had taken me in said, "country boy, you're all right."
The same way I turned her on, she turned me out
The first law I broke, right away they got me
I helped them build the country roads for awhile
They fed me two times a day and knocked me down about four

For thirty days I didn't even crack a smile

I met a nice girl and she said I was her baby
She let me go and would never tell me why
I learned what it means to be somebody's baby
They let you lie in your bed by yourself and cry

The miles were good but the mileage is turnin' my hair gray
I've met some people that knew me and call me friend
Ain't no sense in wantin' my life to live over
I'd find different ways to make those mistakes again

So let me say this, I never tried to hurt anybody
Though I guess there's a few that I still couldn't look in the eye
If I've got one wish, I hope it rains at my funeral
For once, I'd like to be the only one dry

    S.... ....

No he said he hopes it rains so he’s the only one dry, so he can have peace for once.

  16. j.... b....

For 30 days I forgot how to smile,,,If I could live my life over, I'd probably walk down that same old road,,,again, even knowing where it would end,,

  17. J.... A....

    One of the greats.

I’m happiest when it rains. I like it.

  19. M.... c....

I like them naked women too Tom.

  20. B.... F....

My father from Ireland came out as a child 1 brother 2 sisters the old guy in the sky was what he loved rain was what a real farmer looked for live long and rest in the halls of our fathers newest man to stand tall Tony

  21. B.... F....

He saw the naked women in the magazines.

Seriously, this is a powerfully great storytelling song from a legend. 👍👍😊

    There you go.

When I was a kid in Brentwood Tn. a buddy of mine got me a job cleaning Tom's tour bus before and after runs. Really nice guy . Back when a regular guy like me, could run into any number of country stars, and they didnt have to worry about being mobbed by fans or worst paparazzi . Back then I worked at the carwash, not far from where Tom's bus was kept. I would regularly take the wheel of wynonna or Naomi's Judds black Mercedes Benz they would always be toghether. I didn't know untill someone told me who they were. They both were the most down to earth, genuinely nice, people. As was tom and many other country music stars I had the privilege to meet.

  26. f.... ....

There’s few who wrote/write songs like this. And then deliver it with power. Nanci Griffith, Hank Senior, Alan Jackson... Merle Haggard was king of the delivery, Taylor Swift could turn a lyric and deliver it (albeit a little shallow) and Brad Paisley can tell a story, but Tom T Hall just was beyond compare.
Like this song: a whole lifetime squeezed into thirty minutes of imagery and put out in song in under 4 minutes. THAT is a legend.

  27. J.... ....

    Man, I've been there too.

  28. R.... N....

    I love beer

  29. b.... ....

My Air Force roommate, Stanton Sharp, claimed to be Tom T's cousin. I spoke to Stan's mother once when I answered the dorm phone. She said SHE was Tom's cousin. Her name was Wilma Hall. I guess that WOULD
make Stan his cousin. I wish I could find Stan's grave in Keenen West Virginia.

Yesterday I was thinking about my funeral and I said to myself : "I hope it will be a rainy day" and by fate or call you whatever you want, but here I am 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿

  36. m.... ....

Tom T Hall has always reminded me of my Dad. Not just his appearance, but also the autobiographical nature of songs like this one , remind me of the few stories I heard from my Dad before he passed away.

  37. J.... R....

Precious memories, take me back to the good ol days!

  38. B.... F....

I hope it rains when I go.

  39. t.... c....

Was he even mention in Ken Burns doc?

    t.... c....

He gave comment several times. Wasn't mentioned as a performer, best of my recollection but shared his experiences of the times.
Well spoken and respectful. A living legend in his own right in proper Country Music.

  40. J.... D....

This is smooth as Tennessee whiskey. This is sweet as strawberry wine. This is warm as a glass of brandy. This is country.

    The name "
Resurrecting Country Music" really touches me because it's a shame it even has to be resurrected..I'm only in my 50's and the reason I'm here is because I wanted the words and listed to "Old Dogs and Children"..I have to play at a Seniors Complex here in Newfoundland Canada and last time I played there, I got a request to play this song..SO, after 24 hours, I can play the song without looking at the words. No matter where I play, traditional Country music is all I play, all I now, all I wanna know..BUT I need to ask, Is there more I can do to help resurrect Country music??Today, what they call country music is an absolute embarrassment to the industry.. Keep those great songs comin', I'll never tire of them!!

    E.... K....

    Sir,
In my humble opinion please keep playing and giving honor to what Country Music was. Today's country music is what I call Pop Music. It has no meaning, no guts or balls. Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wyanette respectively had more guts and balls than all these modern day fools. Today they sing into a computer with pitch perfect software and a cow or crow would sound good. It is about how they look and marketing of their trashy output.
Our Country Music of years gone by is all we have. Play it, pick it and sing it. I try.
    With respect,
    Sgt. Mullins

a man from my home town would get drunk on vanilla extract and after shave. I guess it's true, 'there really is something about an Aqua Vela man.'

  51. G.... A....

Good old songs that are real music

  52. H.... D....

This song reminds me of my Grandmother’s graveside service in 1994. It started raining so hard and remained that way all during that time until after the service ended. It had been a clear day up until then. Many of us wondered if she had something to do with it since my Grandmother had been such a character all her life. We could see her doing something like that if she was able. I love you Grandma.❤️

  53. M.... A....

    Tom was a bad ass

  58. S.... M....

Kinda makes you feel like most of his stories were real

  59. J.... S....

All I can say is YEP! LOL😎

  60. T.... C....

What happened to country music ? At best it's in a state of severe decline.

    T.... C....

Big money interests that control it today, that's what happened. I will say this; the people that control it are not true country fans, nor do they like the people that the music originally sprang from.

    T.... C....

Check out Colter Wall. A young singer/songwriter, who is bringing back real country & western musicd

  61. D.... S....

Another great songwriter. Is he still alive, if not. RIP.

  62. H.... T....

    What a song.

  67. C.... H....

Have heard the same from my dad. Dont run boy you won't get far and I know where you sleep. Went half crazy in my teens and early 20's but learnt enough from him that I turned out alright after all.

I think the 'T' in Tom T's name stands for Truth:
"Ain't no sense in wanting my life to live over, I'd find different ways to make those mistakes again."

    Amen to those sentiments T!

  73. j.... ....

Ain't no fun when at least half the song applies to you.

  74. S.... ....

The father of the boy in the song reminded me of my own dad, an ex-state trooper and infantry veteran of WWII, Korea & Vietnam: “You might run boy, but you ain’t gonna’ get far.” I’m glad all my own children were girls. The thought that the boy later BECOMES the father always terrified me. I spoiled my girls as a result, but they all turned out great. Now I’m spoiling my grandchildren, boys and girls alike— eight so far. My dad died at age 85 (1916-2001) and I believe he could have knocked me out cold up until his last few months, although I was once an Army soldier myself; 6’4” & 250 lbs.

  75. S.... A....

  85. h.... ....

Characteristically brilliant songs about real life, but that's always been Tom T.'s stock-in-trade.

  86. F.... H....

His earlier stuff was a lot more cheerful.
Guess were we are all growing up with Tom T.

  87. O.... ....

I used to play this one on WLIZ Radio in Lake Worth, FL. 'LIZ was owned by the late Sam Phillips. I was a DJ there and learned so much from him. I keep in touch with "Sally" every chance I get. Being a DJ was so very SPECIAL. It was WONDERFUL!
