Hall, Tom T. - Ballad Of Forty Dollars Lyrics
The man who preached the funeral said it really was a simple way to die
He laid down to rest one afternoon and never opened up his eyes
They hired me and Fred and Joe to dig the grave and carry up some chairs
It took us seven hours and I guess we must have drunk a case of beer
And anyway when they start talking about the fire in hell, well, I get spooked
So, I'll just sit here in my truck and act like I don't know him when they pass
Anyway, when they're all through I've got to go to work and mow the grass
Well, here they come and who's that ridin' in that big ol' shiny limousine
Look at all that chrome, I do believe that that's the sharpest thing I've seen
That must belong to his great uncle, someone said he owned a big ol' farm
When they get parked I'll mosey down and look it over, that won't do no harm
That sure is a pretty dress, you know some women do look good in black
Well, he's not even in the ground and they say that his truck is up for sale
They say she took it pretty hard, but you can't tell too much behind the veil
Well, listen ain't that pretty when the bugler plays the military taps
I think that when you's in the war they always had to play a song like that
Well here I am and there they go and I guess you'd just call it my bad luck
I hope he rests in peace, the trouble is the fellow owes me forty bucks

Tom T Hall is a national treasure. One of the greatest songwriters ever, and a great entertainer on top of that. A true gem.

Been listening to Tom T since I was a kid way back in the early 70s when my dad used to belong to the Columbia House Record Club. He had Tom T's Greatest Hits Vol 1 on 8 Track and I used to listen to that a lot. Now, 45+ years later, although I am partial to Pink Floyd, Moody Blues and RUSH I still listen to Tom on a regular basis. Still play Charlie Rich, Roger Miller, Charlie Pride and Waylon jennings on a regualr basis too.

This song is so good. So powerfull
Thanks for stoppin' by. :) Mikey Thompson
"A Good Death Is Hard To Find" would have been a GREAT song title if Tom. T. Hall would have only written the lyrics to it. The title comes from a "Longmire" episode.

I used to play these Tom. T. Hall songs on WLIZ in Lake Worth, FL back in the 60's and 70's. I worked for Sam Phillips of Sun Recording Studios/Sun Records out of Memphis. These songs made me cry THEN, and most certainly, NOW. The "Homecoming" and "I Hope It Rains At My Funeral," especially. I can't BELIEVE I remembered all of the lyrics to these great songs. Tom T. Hall- GOD Bless you.
I grew up listening to Tom T. Hall and love a lot of his tunes--But this one has always been my favorite--Happy Birthday T.T.H...!!!

Always liked this song..It reminds me of my dad in that he he drove a pickup and did odd jobs in addition to his regular job, like mowing the lawns for cemeteries and other places. He also never owned a suit! Great balled from Tom T.

Tom T. is one of the last real song writers around....him and John Prine......I haven't listened to country for 30 years.....it's all crap now......
Tom T. Hall and John Prine are some of my favorites, too, but some of the greatest country songwriters ever are putting out albums these days. You just need to get away from pop country radio to hear them. Check out Jason Isbell, Corb Lund, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Gurf Morlix, Fred Eaglesmith, Robert Earl Keen, James McMurtry, Ben Nichols, Wayne Hancock... and that's just off the top of my head.
@CallingDoctorUnk Agreed with that. But the industry won't even label those artists country. They call it Americana. People are generally too lazy to find good music.
Aaron lewis chris stapleton sturgill simpson and a few more but it's still alive just hard to find if u dont know what to look for
@CallingDoctorUnk corb lund and rwh good but imo the others arent real country
@JENNY COOPER Well, one could argue that Tom T. Hall (and even more so John Prine) had a foot in the singer-songwriter genre and a foot in folk, so that was more the angle of my suggestions, not 'pure' modern country. But hey, thanks for weighing in!
Another great one posted by urhill! Awesome tune, friend! I can tell you have a taste for story songs as I do! I'm just an old classic rock drummer, but I sure have always (and will continue to) loved Tom T. GOD BLESS TOM T!!!!
classic, simple, country.

Thanks for kind words, Mikey. On this LP, Jerry Kennedy plays spanish dobro (lead). Later, after the LP's release, Ray Edwards, multi-instrumentist and still member of Tom T.'s tour band -stage and TV- use the same "lead-melody notes".

I am a member of a veteran's military honor guard and I always ask the younger members if they have ever heard this song. If not I always recommend they listen to it. Thanks for making it easy for them to hear a song I have been listening to for so many years.

Watched him at the John Wayne Theater when he sang this. America has gone in the toilet since then.
That is the truth.
I have to watch as my grandma and grandpa, who i love very much and who raised me, become totally consumed by pharmaceuticals and my mother by meth and some f'd up ass pill. All i can do is keep a clear head, enjoy Tom T., Waylon..etc., and keep catchin these bass like they're goin' out of style.
God Bless all of you who know country music and are good Americans.
"Choose freedom over safety".
It's because Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond. Horrible shows...

I was born in 67. I've seen a lot of shit in my time, plastic assholes come n go. Trust your guts n intestinal fortitude as far as people go. That includes family!!
Only Forty Bucks??? That was a while back!!! I've been playing and singing this song since the day I first heard it. The thought of the lyrics just crack me up.
However, what's goin' on in DC at this very moment makes me ashamed to be an American!
When the bugler played the "Military Taps" at my foster-dad's funeral in March 2001, I almost lost it, the memories came back SOOOO strong!!! It was damned hard!!!
When a sitting U.S. President says that he only likes heroes who weren't captured, it turns my stomach!!!
Thanks to my foster-dad, to U.S. Senator John Glenn, et al!!!

Well, some people just naturally dislike everything and can't stand people that do like something.
Whoever hit the dislike on this great old tune probably descended from a family tree with no branches...in other words, their mother and dad were closely related!!! LOL
@JackSkellington36 ...It is a great old tune! one of my favorites also.... :)
