Haken - Earthlings Lyrics

Greed ignites your sin
Black seed burns in a bed of lies
Destroy and annihilate our world
Tearing grace from purity to survive

Helpless life doused in a flash
Plunge in the knife, burning to ashes
They plead, they don't know why they're on show
Hell holds a place for all of us

Watching my friends bleed
I break down, I concede
In life, I knew paradise and freedom
With those now unknown to me I will fly

Helpless life doused in a flash
Plunge in the knife, burning to ashes
They plead, they don't know why they're on show
Mercy betrayed, floods cannot wash away

All of the pain rushes in
Beauty deceased, instinct takes over
Bygone are the days, darkness reigns
Hell holds a place for all of us

Life, endless paradise
Beauty painted by sin
Hell on Earth breeding ignorance
The door opens for us

Greed ignites pain inflames the weak but we remain bygone
Marching on, they watch as their kind suffer and die before them
Is this not some kind of genocide? Breaking, crushing, defiling
We live as Lords of the Earth, we bear powers of mercy yet we choose

Life, endless paradise
Beauty broken by sin
Hell on Earth breeding ignorance
The door opens for us

Life, endless paradise
Beauty destroyed by sin
Hell on Earth breeding ignorance
Hell holds a place for us

Open the door
Open the door

    Haunting....

Does anyone know what the song is about? The lyrics are interesting.

My guess is it's about human greed motivating us to do horrendous things to the planet because we choose greed as 'lords of the earth' with 'powers of mercy'. We don't stand up to care for nature and have mercy, instead breaking, crushing, defiling, plunging with knives, and burning the flesh of trillions of animals each year (way more than the number of humans ever to have lived). It's called 'Earthlings', which may refer to the documentary of the same name about animal suffering. As far as black seed goes, it's a seed thought to be a cureall for ages, since the time of the Egyptians at least. So whether the 'cure-all' being referred to as burning in a bed of lies here is nature or a believing in a god...who knows?

Earthlings is a film which details all of the ways which humans exploit animals. My guess is that it’s inspired by that film and the horrific ways that we treat our fellow earthlings... 💔

    @Laura Carr i second that.
after seeing the movie, this song represents it well.

I get definite Steven Wilson vibes from the very beginning (Insurgentes, GFD, perhaps?). Never heard of Cynic so thanks for the heads up!

Those vocals are just incredible as fuck and reminds me many nostalgic memories that I can't even describe properly. I do listen to whole EP just for that vocal lines.

  6. F.... ....

I love the way he sings the last few verses. Awesome stuff. Thanks for uploading. =)

  7. M.... ....

Good Tool influences, sounds like Wings for Marie... Haken's saddest song.

    M.... ....

Wings for Marie (Espec the hidden track version if that counts) is my favorite song
    Haken is my favorite band
So I would say you have a point

    M.... ....

    Right in Two..

    M.... ....

I think Sun is contesting the Saddest Haken Song podio

    M.... ....

As Death Embraces. At least for me.

    M.... ....

    Deathless for me

  8. Y.... B....

This song feels like it is going to erupt but it remains subdued all the way through...
Feels like many emotions press the boundaries and try to erupt but the mind just keeps it restrained...

  9. L.... I....

Cynic feel? I respect and love Haken, but it's not level of Cynic. But yeah, I hear something similiar.

    L.... I....

+Leonid Isachenko enjoy the music and stop comparing...

    L.... I....

What's funny is I'd never heard of "Cynic", I mistook the word for Cynical, then people mistook my Cynical word for Cynic. We people are fuckin amazing.

  10. I.... S....

    Words so heavy.

  11. w.... ....

I can't get enough of this song.

  12. N.... F....

This reminds me a lot of Cynic. Pretty good

  13. L.... L....

this is so re-traced of cynic... just awesome

  14. R.... ....

This is soooo good! probably my favourite track from the EP has a Tool / Cynic feel. Crystallised would have been but they went abit mental from 9:15 onwards. Trying to be abit too prog for their own good.

    R.... ....

    @Sebastian Bustos-Smith
I think Haken often does venture down the "too prog for their own good path" in many of their earlier songs, but I also think they hit the mark perfectly with songs like Darkest Light and In Memoriam, and managed to work it well into many of the other longer "The Mountain" tracks.
I mean then again, like you said, that's just their style.

    R.... ....

+RemnantsOfBeauty there is no such thing as too prog

    R.... ....

There's being progressive musically and being progressive just for the sake of it. Like Dream Theater's crazy circus sounding moments in songs. In my opinion doesn't make the song better, But each to their own.

    R.... ....

    All of Crystallized is amazing.

    R.... ....

To me thats when Crystallised gets most interesting for me :) Love that whole bit.
