I didn't expect a caress on the soul this strong. When I first listened to mountain, this track hit me like a truck.

Man, I know there's some tweaking, but the harmonies, especially with the bass/baritone being so strong, is beautiful.

anyone know of they're using a vocoder? I'm pretty sure they aren't the first minute but then it sounds like they bring it in for the second half of the intro

everyone in the band sings these parts live. for the studio it's mostly or all Jennings

bruh they are not using a vocoder. they are purely using reverb at the beginning to imitate a sound of singing in a concert hall as a choir would . then the second half is more than half the amount of reverb . the beginning is the into section to the a Capella . like I said imitating a choir in a church/ concert hall . etc they are just amazing at harmonies so it sounds super crisp!

Guys, really? Why do you feel the need to classify so bad? What if Haken would make an electronic-only music album tomorrow, would you still try to tell if they're prog metal or prog rock? A band's style could change from an album to the other, so how the hell do you think you can tell if they belong to 2 genres which differ in such little things?

@KazeReload Agreed. For me, genre is a classification system simply to put my music into convenient 'bins' for purposes of sharing. In a sense, 'genre' is a form of language, with the purpose of simply communicating. Like any good language it's dynamic and changes, whose duty is to respectfully convey the information of the sender to best be received by the receiving parties.


In this way, there is no reason for anyone to get upset about genre or argue it for that matter. Perhaps arguing the tenants of a genre or discussing if individual groups qualify to be a part of a genre, but there should never be a sense of pride to be a member of a genre, or as a fan to feel offended if music you enjoy is not part of a particular genre. All genre are emotionless and equal, and thus should be treated as such.

I don't count Haken as progressive metal. They are Prog Rock through and through. Aquarius was borderline metal, but ever since King Crimson it's obvious that prog rock is heavier than traditional rock. It doesn't mean it's metal.

Prog metal is a sub genre of prog rock

The borders of prog rock and prog metal are nearly unexistent...best example for this is Haken's "Falling Back to Earth". It has some pretty heavy riffs, but also parts that are rather slow and chilling, so perfectly on the border of prog rock and metal :P

It's basically a number (not all) of genres sorted by arbitrary factors (technical to organic, dense to spikey or something like that) on a 2D plane. Gives a nice impression of the huge variety of genres.

You people need to stop assuming. Just look it up. There classified on everything as progressive metal. Saying this song isn't metal or isn't progressive just means your ignorant. Most bands always have a couple songs that are more of a chorale and made to be calming. Just because it's different doesn't disapprove there style or genre. Just appreciate it for what it is.

I fully agree. Thats no haevy metal at all. Gentle Giant Yes and dream Theatre or even Ruish but it is very nice music

....I still fail to see why are people saying Haken is a metal band. They are as metal as Porcupine Tree are. Yes they have a few metal-ish songs and sometimes they incorporate metal elements but it is not the basis for their music.Haken is more of a prog rock band that I COULD BET MY LEFT NUT listened a lot of Yes and Gentle Giant while writing this album. More Gentle GIant than Yes I would say. And having listened a lot of Dream Theater (and I dont even like DT)  there is nothing even comparable to them. Sorry for my english.

Great truth. To define Haken as a metal band is indeed ridiculous. They're ve got plenty of different styles. Mixing them so perfectly is definetely their strenght. In their previous works we can listen to a major metal influence but but to appreciate that part only, it's not worth of it.

Prog music definitely needs to grow on you. Its just different, and I actually am not a prog fanatic either. I was introduced to the genre by Haken (as opposed to dream theater, like everyone else). And I couldn't get through half an album at first, though I was enchanted by the melodies of their first album from the start, it was just so different that I couldn't listen to it for long periods of time. Doesn't make the music bad though, in fact, I think the mountain is a great album.

I really like the bit that starts at 1:50. The effect produced on me is that you're walking on a path and you're constantly being tempted to stray off of it (the melody shifts on and off the path like you're being bombarded by temptations and defeating thoughts). But you continue on, "because its there"...it being whatever it is that the listener is looking for. If you knew that whatever you're looking for in life was achievable, wouldn't you push forward, "because its there"? Brilliant music!

I'm telling you, I've been following them since they released their first album, and they completely renewed my vision of prog metal! In all of what they've done so far, I'm sure you will find what touches you if you take the time! ;)

I do play music. I've played guitar and bass for over 10 years. I came here and said I didn't think it sounded good. That's my opinion. I understand the complexity of the music and appreciate it; it's just that the note progressions and melodies sounded boring to me. I am a big fan of quite a few prog acts, and that's why I checked these guys out. I will say they are growing on me, though :)

this is, in my opinion, their worst album. Try visions (particularly the song, Shapeshifter), and Affinity (any song here is great)

Do you play music? As a bass player, I can definitely tell you that the bass sounds GREAT, and I don't think it is arguable. If you don't like this music, it's fine with me, but don't come and say that it doesn't sound good at all, because that is pure nonsense when you carefully look at all the crazy shit Haken has done that no one had ever done before, which is rare as fuck in modern music.

I don't get it...everyone praises this band as being absolutely amazing, but after listening to a good number of their songs and trying to like them, I can't seem to understand the hype. I don't think anything really sounds good.

I completely agree. Haken is my absolute favorite band and even though Visions was incredible, I still had a couple I thought could be touched up. This album...is perfect.

This may very well be my favorite song on the album. The more I listen to the whole thing, the more I realize that all of the songs are quite varied (whether it's between each song or sometimes within a single song). There isn't a track I dislike; in fact, I love all of them! Extremely rare for me to say that about an entire album.
