Haggard, Merle - When Did Right Become Wrong Lyrics

It used to be right that you love me
You said so and I thought so too
We'd talk maturely bout old puppy love
Comparing the old with the new

If it so right we love each other
Then why that you'd rather be gone
You seem to take pride in deceiving
But when did right become wrong?
When did right become wrong?

Norman Hamlet
And Roy Nichols

You made a good talk about romance
You said "You just know it when it's real"
You sealed your orations with kisses of fire
Oh, darlin' weren't they really real

If it's so right that I hold you
Then why have I not in so long
For you know I can't even touch you
And when did right become wrong?
When did right become wrong?

Thank you so much
One of the greatest songwriters of our time
Mr Tommy Collins wrote that song especially for us
Right now we'd like to invite the rest of our show out on the bandstand
A young lady that sings harmony with us on all of our records
And she has many fine records of her own
We're gonna have her do some of those records
And we're gonna do that right now if you'll all get together and welcome
Miss Bonnie Owens out on the bandstand

Thank you, Merle

You got your fightin' side colors on hadn't you
Just give her a hand there for her fightin' side colors, my goodness

Woah he did it with “Leonard”!
Is it safe to assume Collins penned this number? I wonder what year this was...

God I loved the Hag. This is such a fine rendition. I learned about Merle in Okinawa in '75 and '76 as a young serviceman. This song and his live album from Philadelphia, with Bonnie Owens. Fantastic. Philadelphia lawyers......man, he said a mouthful.

    J.... M....

    She was a great singer.

I never realized how many songs Merle recorded that was written by Tommy Collins (Leonard Sipes) was his given name. This song is one of them.

THE BEST OF THE M'F'N BEST. The song that Merle did entitled "Leonard" is about the man who wrote this song, Tommy Collins. Tommy wrote tons of songs and is the person who recorded the deal where the preacher goes off on the congregation on Easter Sunday. lol I'm sure it's on YouTube.

Merle was my #1 musical influence. His personal life was a pile of garbage but no one grabbed a hold on my heart with his songs like the Great Merle Haggard. There is a whole in my heart. Going out on the porch to play my guitar and sing a Haggard song.

Peace, Love and Merle F'n Haggard ;)

  19. H.... ....

Not really a Rare recording..but it was a dandy..This was on Merle's Fightin' Side of Me - Live in Philadelphia album recorded on Valentine's Day 1970

    H.... ....

I have this CD. Great singing.

  20. J.... K....

  21. P.... M....

Merle and Tommy were bros.; both great country songwriters; great...

    P.... M....

    wrong person sorry.

    P.... M....

+Homer Wood what do u mean not nice he was a classy singer and these other singers today couldnt tie his shoes

    P.... M....

I wouldnt give a plugged nickel for these so called country music sangers of today.

    P.... M....

    I wouldn't give a fake wooden for u. Hehehe

    P.... M....

    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Much obliged Maam.

  22. J.... K....

None other better than Mighty Merle...the BEST! Janelle in Houston

  23. M.... ....

Another great classic song from the pen of the fabulous Tommy Collins (1930-2000). Hag sang a lot of Tommy's songs over the years, even a tribute song that he wrote and recorded called, 'Leonard'.

  24. h.... ....

not from the OUTSIDE but from the INSIDE ..... a very beautiful man.

  25. D.... C....

I agree....I think that he sings better live, compared to his studio recordings. He's stated that he loves to be on stage..probably the reason that he sounds so good live.

  26. D.... C....

What's rare about this recording? It's on the "Fightin Side of Me" album....very easily obtainable.

  27. J.... N....

TY FOR SHARING--SMOKEY--I HAVE NEVER HEARD A BAD HAG SONG--IF THERE IS THEN STEP FORWARD--THE HAG

  28. M.... H....

Thank you ! I thought I'd never find this song. One of my all-time favorite MH songs. I had this same live album on 8-track back in the stone-age. Thanks, again.

  29. p.... ....

from the live in philidelphia album, true talent, he sounds that good live, and before the days of computers and microphone filters.

  30. y.... ....

    THAT VOICE!!!!!!

  31. g.... ....

This was always one of my favorite Haggard songs. It's ironic that I'm living it now.
