Haggard, Merle - The Way It Was In '51 Lyrics

Sixty-Six was still a narrow two-lane highway
Harry Truman was the man who ran the show
The bad Korean war was just beginning
And I was just three years too young to go

Country music hadn't gone to New York City yet
And a service man was proud of what he'd done
And Hank and Lefty crowded every jukebox
That's the way it was in '51

There's so much about the good old days I'd love to tell
And there's folks around I know, still remember well
Slow dancin' close together when a ballad played
'Cause a thing called, 'Rock and Roll' was yet to come
It was a big year for a drive-in rest'rant, Carhop
And that's the way it was in '51

There's so much about the good old days I'd love to tell
And there's folks around I know, still remember well
Slow dancin' close together when a ballad played
'Cause a thing called, 'Rock and Roll' was yet to come
A big year for a drive-in rest'rant, Carhop
And that's the way it was in '51

Hank and Lefty crowded every jukebox
Oh Lord, that's the way it was in '51

Great song, however they should have somehow put the #1 hit maker of the fifties Webb Pierce in there . He was more popular than any singer in the 50s

  10. C.... W....

Listening to "White Line Fever" on 8 track in my daddy's old motorhome. Gas was 35 cents a gallon and the future was yet to be. Now Merle and his music are gone and the future soon will be for those of us who are left that remember. I grieve for the past.

  11. F.... S....

Merle Haggard is the greatest country writer of all time. No question. No doubt. Merle was and will always be the master; he knew EXACTLY how to tell a story in a song... we will all miss him forever, but I hope we keep him alive.

We lost an intire way of life when we lost all them good old country singers and writer the USA will never be that way again they wrote and sang from memorys they lived or heard about and all them sang the greatest gospel songs what people call music today I can't even understand I can't for the life of me even begin to listen to rap it's not where the beef it's where tje music all I ever hear is mumbling very little instrumentally sounds like the steel giture Fiddler bass dobro bango piano keyboard and horns and we wounder why our country is the going to pot right willie i know people my age that never heard of George Jones just sad to see what we stand for today I don't believe any President can make the USA great again I believe it is going to take all of us that can read between the lines and past all the political bullshit and not be afraid to stand up to politics on capitol hill in Washington dc and tell like it is the way all the country singers did all the way back to hank sr and not worry about what a fan might think if they said the wrong thing or admitt to using a drug or alcohol but reach out to maybe help someone else going through the same thing or sing about a cowboy or girl and just let them know that we are not going let them use party lines to keep us devided any longer we have been writing bills passing new laws for over 2 hundred years one party the patriots and when we need heath cAre or pension plan or a raise we get the smartest people that can set down and study the problem and come up with a plan that is affordable and work's for every not the rich or the poor or middle class there so many things that we could do to make sure our grandchildren have a land called the good USA hotdogs cherry pie country music hero mom and dad anyway just sad to see it all on drugs gambling addiction no good for the community

Does anyone recognize the reference to "A big year for a drive-in restaurant carhop?" With a little investigation it could be Tempest Storm, but am curious if anyone really knows.

    j.... ....

From the mid 50s to the mid 60s there was drive in restaurants where you ate in your car and girls called carhops would take your order and bring your order out to you. Here in salt lake city there was 4 of them.

That was true side of life in those days, I was born in 1950 and grew up on those songs from the Country Showbands here in Ireland, they were the first to play Country music for us, in later years we heard the American singers on the eight track tapes and a new world was opened up to us. From then it was sheer bliss to Country Music lovers here and to stil lbe able enjoy them still to this day is priceless, keep posting and keep Country Alive.
