Haggard, Merle - Mother, The Queen Of My Heart Lyrics

I had a home down in Texas down where the bluebonnets grew
I had the kindest old mother how happy we were just we two
Till one day the angels called her that debt we all have to pay
She'd call me close to her bedside these last few words to say.

Son don't start drinking and gambling promise you'll always go straight
Ten years have passed as we parted that promise I've broke I must say
I started gambling for past time at last I was just like them all
I bet my clothes and my money never dreaming that I'd ever fall.

One night I've bet all my money nothing was left to be seen
All that I needed to break them was one card and that was a Queen
The cards were delt round the table each man took a card on the draw
I drew the one that would beat them I turned it here's what I saw.

I saw my mother's picture somehow she seemed to say
Son you have broken your promise so I tossed the cards away
My winnings I gave to a newsboy I knew I was wrong from the start
I'll never forget that promise to the mother the Queen of my heart.

Oh le-ee oh le-ee oh le-ee...

A voice that is one of kind. There is just one Merle Haggard. Some come close but close is only good in horse shoes. A one of a kind and humble singer.

When we were kids in the 1950s, Dad and Mum sang for us vintage songs. We learned some of these songs and very special to us was "Mother the Queen of my Heart". Mum passed away on 1 May 2017. In celebrating Mum's life, I being the eldest recalled this song to my siblings; and now so special. I played this song repeatedly and sang too. Mum was 87 years and 'is' (was) the pillar for our perseverance and success in life. God grant eternal rest to Mum and Dad. Godfrey Weldt

My father used to sing this to me & now that he is gone this song comes to me frequently, so I know he is with me anytime this song comes to me. Thanks to Bill Morris ( my Cousin) & Barb LaBarr (also my cousin ) I now know who sang the song & the Lyrics.

My Papa used to sing this, but more like the Jimmie Rodgers version, yodeling and all. I inherited that voice from him and carry on playing this. Such a beautiful and well written song.

My father's favourite song - he used to sing this after he'd had a couple of drinks.
God bless you dad and may your soul rest in peace.

This is an old tune of Jimmie Rodgers who drew his last hand May 26, 1933...a victum of tha dreded T. B. One'a his last recordings was "T.B. Blues". He lived in Kerrville Tx. where he'd moved for health reasons. Merle recorded a few of his other tunes too.

He (Merle) was pretty young when he recorded this album...he sounds good even today! And this is good album.. I must say Merle is the BEST! Janelle - Houston, Texas
