Haggard, Merle - Cherokee Maiden Lyrics

One night when the moon was bright o'er a moonlight glade
That is where I found my little Cherokee maid
The me'mry of that night of love is lingering yet
And I know I never will forget.

My little Cherokee maiden I love her so and though we're far apart
I know I'll never be tradin' my love for her for anybody else's heart
Someday I'll make a trip back to the Cherokee strip
And I'll carry her away with me
And straight as an arrow flies we'll live to paradise
My sweet little chickadee my little Cherokee maiden and me.

My little Cherokee maiden I love her so and though we're far apart
I know I'll never be tradin' my love for her for anybody else's heart
Someday I'll make a trip back to the Cherokee strip
And I'll carry her away with me
And straight as an arrow flies we'll live to paradise
My sweet little chickadee my little Cherokee maiden and me...

Merle Haggard was one of the best! I haven't heard one of his songs I didn't like! Thank you for sharing this one, Jack.

Actually, I don't know who it is but there IS another country music artist. Either Johnny Gimble or Bob Willis who sings the high voice and he's the one who "talks".

    @Marcus Blackwell:
Look up old Bob Wills recordings. Someone is doing an imitation of him. Like in the "whoops" part, Bob Wills would correct his musicians onstage if they made a mistake, but it eventually became part of the shtick. Here's Bob's version of Cherokee Maiden from 1941:

@Marcblur so in a way this guy was a sort of "impersonator"?

    M.... B....

    @Marcblur so the guy @ 0:21 isn't him?

    M.... B....

@Marcus Blackwell I don't think it is. He'd have been long dead by the the time this was recorded.

    M.... B....

@Marcblur actually, I'm thinking this is either early 80s late 70s & he died in 75

  8. M.... B....

Merle at 2:00 looks like my daddy which I will never put on the Internet

  9. M.... B....

I'm usually the one that has the country sounds in my soul the most (I think), but both me and my momma both took a liking to this. I've never told anyone this but my momma's boyfriend is George Strait. Don't use this to your advantage because if I could, I would honestly take this comment and anyone who might abuse it will be taken seriously and taken down

  10. P.... I....

None better than Merle on this old fiddle tune - Bob Wills would approve :)

  11. R.... P....

    Merle was a fruit

Here you go KK; when I hear this song; (But I don't go to Bars, just love the Hag) I think of you and John; you two were really in love. and you two made 2 beautiful babies.  I am still sad at Merle passing; I sure hope he's making someone happy. Love and prayers.

  13. N.... T....

    My favorite tune!

  14. K.... L....

I have to wonder, who is the 1 person who disliked this? I mean, really??? What were they expecting to hear? Some plastic banana garbage from some failed pop-wannabe, singing a pop-music rejected song that they now call Country Music today? Please...get a grip and rewind your listening material at least 30 yrs (60 yrs would be even better) and bask in some true country talent and get your mind right

This was actually the final single where he/they were officially credited as 'Merle Haggard And The Strangers.'  Also, it was a grouped two-sided hit single.  The flip side was entitled "What Have You Got Planned Tonight Diana."  This double selection reached the top number one position on the United States of America BILLBOARD entertainment magazine 'Hot Country Singles' chart exactly forty years ago this coming week.  I never heard it until now..     :-]

  16. K.... T....

I love this song. My son and I listen to this in my truck on my CD, and he just loves it too. Rest In Peace Merle.

  17. B.... D....

    Love this tune!!!

  18. P.... M....

A stand out classic from Merle. A really good nod in the direction of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, complete with all the Hee haws that Bob used to throw in. Just so good. Making excellent use of the last of the boys from the band too. Superb, like some of the other posts say this gem of a song should get more recognition. It's one of Merle's finest moments, he does the genre justice. Long live Merle Haggard and long live Western swing

  19. P.... M....
