Haggard, Merle - Are You Lonesome Tonight? Lyrics

Are you lonesome tonight, do you miss me tonight
Are you sorry we drifted apart
Does your memory stray to a bright summer day
When I held you and called you sweetheart?

Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare
Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again
Tell me dear are you lonesome tonight?

I wonder if you're lonesome tonight
You know that someone said the world's a stage and each must play a part
And fate had me playin' in Love with you as my sweetheart
Act one was where we met, I loved you at first glance
You read your lines so cleverly and never missed a cue, then came act two
You seemed to change, you acted strange and why I've never known
Honey, you lied when you said you loved me and I had no 'cause to doubt you
But I'd rather go on hearing your lies than to have to go on living without you
Now the stage is bare and I'm standing there with emptiness all around
And if you won't come back to me they can bring the curtain down.

Is your heart filled with pain, could I come back again
Tell me dear are you lonesome tonight?...

Nobody can sing a Haggard song like the Hag can.....and nobody can sing an Elvis song like Elvis can (including the Hag)

You could say that (which in and of itself doesn't mean you should), without the tag of course, about anyone. Take William Hung for example. What should be noted is this: In '62, a fella named Sinatra collaborated on a collection of tunes in 3/4 time, including this one from 1927, with arranger Gordon Jenkins. Incidentally, it was recorded many times over before Elvis was born in '35. You're familiar with it because, well, he was Elvis and he had a hit with it. I'm sure Sinatra was aware of his "hit" but it didn't stop him from taking a crack at two years later. The album wasn't a big seller, fickle public and rock music was beginning to come of age, but Mr. S was in magnificent voice and for a connoisseur such as yourself, the album "Alone," shouldn't be missed. Perhaps you've heard of Tom Jones, he of the open shirt, great pipes and poor taste?

Merle sang a couple of Elvis hits and they are all beautiful. Nobody can sing like the "Hag". Love this.

Theres only one actual country singer, that Hank Sr.... Rest are wanna be's.....

    m.... k....

Why ?... Because to be considerate a country singer, You must live the words you sing... Hank sr did each one of his songs .... No one has come even close to Hank sr....

    m.... k....

Wait a minute... Everybody said Johnny Paycheck lived each song he sang..... Now he has did the best song he ever wrote... " The old violin "... Last words, " I gave my all to music, now I will give my life "....

You haven't heard enough country music and you don't understand it. And you don't know what it is or how to listen to it.
