Hackett, Steve - The Musical Box Lyrics

Play me Old King Cole
That I may join with you
All your hearts now seem so far from me
It hardly seems to matter now

And the nurse will tell you lies
Of a kingdom beyond the skies
But I am lost within this half-world
It hardly seems to matter now

Play me my song
Here it comes again
Play me my song
Here it comes again

Just a little bit
Just a little bit more time
Time left to live out my life

Play me my song
Here it comes again
Play me my song
Here it comes again

Old King Cole was a merry old soul
And a merry old soul was he
So he called for his pipe
And he called for his bowl
And he called for his fiddlers three

But the clock, tick tock
On the mantlepiece
And I want
And I feel
And I know
And I touch
Her warmth

She's a lady, she's got time
Brush back your hair, and let me get to know your face
She's a lady, she's mine
Brush back your hair, and let me get to know your flesh

I've been waiting here for so long
And all this time that passed me by
It doesn't seem to matter now
You stand there with your fixed expression
Casting doubt on all I have to say
Why don't you touch me, touch me
Why don't you touch me, touch me
Touch me now, now, now, now, now...

at 8:40 you can feel what is coming and then at 9:00 it starts building... building... BUILDING.... then at 9:40 it hammers down. Wow. What an awesome sound!!!!

  2. v.... ....

Great music kept alive by Steve Hackett and friends. You have our warmest thanks. Saw them in Nov 2019 in Edinburgh. Great show. Looking forward to seeing again later this year.

My favourite Genesis song recaptured in all its magnificence 😉👍😁

  7. P.... M....

magical Music, I fantasize seeing Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, and Steve Hacket together, too much talent to co exist together(

  8. J.... ....

    Brilliance. Pure and simple.

  9. C.... P....

absolut fantastic this team !!! I love the great music of this band !!

  10. M.... W....

I might be the only one but all I can hear is Phil singing this song on the Seconds Out album and how much Better he sounded than this singer.

  11. K.... S....

It's good to see that these old songs are played.

  12. S.... G....

    Τι αριστούργημα, Θεέ μου!

  13. I.... F....

I'VE BEEN WAITING HERE FOR SO LONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG!

  14. H.... S....

Wonderful version. When I heard this song first time, I was young and had a wonderful girlfriend. Gabi. I still love her.

  15. P.... C....

comment s'appelle le chanteur ? Merci

    P.... C....

Il s'appelle Nad Sylvan. Il est super n'est-ce pas?

  16. L.... B....

Saw them 3 times in the seventies. Steve use to sit then. Beautiful rendition.

  17. P.... G....

It seems fairly obvious to me that Hackett and Banks drove the music in this version of Genesis. Peter and Steve left and then Collins drove this band into the ground with his "adult contemporary" bullshit. Imagine being in THAT lineup. Banks sitting there listening to Phil, "Ya, so I'm the singer and play drums and oh ya....I play keyboards as well". "The Way We Walk". Whatever.

  18. G.... A....

I’m a huge fan, but the sax in particular is so jarring, it’s simply the wrong timbre, tone, color for this great music. Just awful.

  19. j.... p....

    MAGNIFICA......SUBLIME!!!!!!!

  21. T.... ....

I wishRob Townsend would stick that instrument fair up his own clacker. He just pisses me off period. reminds me of Nik Turner in his Hawkwind days just wailing away no matter what song was being played.

  22. O.... F....

Det är perfekt...vilken jävla bra framträdande! Sylvan, du klarar med din konst....det är mycket bra. Stolt fick tag på sig....nu med Steve Hackett

  23. j.... p....

Steve Brain Hackett when you comes with Genesis you First Compo merci Steve my God excuse me , my God merci , en francais

  25. p.... ....

I wonder why Steve Howe can’t take an example from Hackett and ditch Geoff Downes and Jon Davison and get great musicians like these that respect the technical proficiency of the material. That way he can stop besmirching the Yes name.

    p.... ....

It's Karoake Yes. They should just pack it in.

  26. G.... S....

    Grande steve hachkett 👍👍👍💎😻😻😻😻🧟‍♀️

  27. A.... B....

Just beautiful - Genesis at their most classical - you stand there with your fixed expression - hairs on neck stand up ..

  28. P.... ....

Hned po originálu s Peterem Gabrielem je to nejlepší verze !! Bravo Steve

  29. i.... ....

Nothin... hear me... NOTHING current stands a comparison to this music.

  30. C.... G....

Todas que este grupo toca são fabulosas. Obrigado por compartilhar conosco

  31. g.... s....

Spine chilling performance all round - Particularly the lead singer!

  32. a.... T....

What I like about the singer is that he has class, he doesn’t want to imitate Gabriel like someone learned a video, he does a real good job by being real classy and cool, way to go Steve for choosing the right band members, it has its own vibe 🍻🙏🍻

    a.... T....

I know what you mean. It's clear that he *could* do a carbon copy Gabriel, but likes to add embellishments of his own. He's very expressive, and very good. This take on the song is as exciting as seeing the Gabriel era Genesis stage version – and I say that as someone who was knocked out when I saw them perform it way back in 1972.

    a.... T....

fatfox57 agree, thats what music is all about, true artist can explore new venues

    a.... T....

@andy T Nad Sylvan in general is incredible. He has a great trilogy of prog albums released under his own name. Then there is also a spiritual successor to Hackett era Genesis under the name Unifaun. Also the work he did with the legendary Roine Stolt in Agents of Mercy.

Nad Sylvan is absolutely top tier.

  33. M.... B....

    Eternal masterpiece Song.

  34. j.... C....

I considered genesis dead for a long time... For me Phill Collins was the worst thing that happened to them. Now, this is something else! Amazing ressuration of a great master piece! Thank you!

  35. E.... A....

Perhaps I'm one of the oldest gits here, I don't know......but, back when I was 12, my cousin (who had just broken up with a cheating boyfriend) in revenge 'gave me' (yes, GAVE ME!) the albums he had left at her place: these included 'Deep Purple In Rock', 'Piper At the Gates Of Dawn', Cooper's 'Love It To Death' and....'Nursery Cryme'. Nothing prepared me for 'Box', Hogweed' and (especially) 'Fountain'. That mellotron sound has haunted me ever since. I played 'Cryme' more or less every day for about a year and snapped up 'Foxtrot' as soon as it hit the shops (I remember it cost £2.18!!!). I also was in the right place and in the right timeframe to see them on all the Gabriel tours (not realising my incredible luck until many years later). 'Fountain' has always vied for second favourite song with 'Watcher' (it changes every couple of years!) behind 'Supper's Ready'. Now, looking back, I can see what an absolute honour it was to be a witness to the greatest music I've ever heard. Unlike many, whilst I enjoyed 'TOTT', it was the last Genesis album I bought. I was very much into the lyrics as well, y'see, and adored PG's whimsically brilliant wordplay. Without him, something was missing. Still, I moved straight on to PG & SH solo albums which spoke to me far more than post-PG Genesis did. It was an absolute pleasure watching/listening to this upload and I'm deeply grateful to the uploader. Thank you - I'm so glad to hear these magical sounds again before I pop my clogs :-)

    E.... A....

It's close-ish, but I'm definitely an older git than you 😁

    E.... A....

    what he said.

  36. P.... Z....

Mi vengono i brividi ogni volta che ascolto questo pezzo, 50 anni sono passati, ma é cosí sempre attuale! Genesis is for ever!!!

  37. J.... D....

100 years in the future this will be what Mozarts music is now....

    J.... D....

    Already it is

    J.... D....

As much as I like the old Genesis - but - no, not at all.

  38. j.... p....

Tony Banks said after a question of a journalist the guitatrist Hackett a genius guitarist and he composed !!!!

    j.... p....

It'd be the first time he said anything nice about Steve....EVER!

  39. .... [....

Dream and magical music. Joy for the ears and the heart.

  40. P.... O....

    Nad Sylvian!!!!! Great

    P.... O....

    P.... O....

    @Igal Flint And?..................................

  41. p.... l....

At 64, I dare to say that Steve Hackett is a being of light who has come to this world with his wonderful music to illuminate and deliver beauty to the earth ... I do not have the technical knowledge of music, I just know that from the beginning of the 70s, where my musical taste was sealed mainly by progressive rock and Genesis mainly.
Here in Chile I have had the opportunity to witness their live shows and what can I say about this experience. Only thanks to life for having had this opportunity.
Thank you Steve for always demonstrating that great simplicity as a person.

    p.... l....

Agreed am going to see steve this friday in Pennsylvania.playing selling England this guy is a true gentleman plus a great 🎶

  42. z.... ....

    Espetacular!

    z.... ....

I think this must be concidered as a performance of classical music compared to the orchestras performing works of Beethoven, Mozart etc. Steve Hackett and his musicians perform historic concerts and it´s unique that one of the composers is on stage!

  43. j.... p....

wHEN Steve Hackett COMES 1970 HE GIVE THIS TO GENESIS ...

Totally and utterly amazing👍 early Genesis the greatest music of all time and this is a spectacular version of a brilliant song

  47. z.... b....

I can still remember clearly the day as a teenager being introduced to the sounds of Genesis by a good buddy. Forty odd years later, nothing comes close musically to classic Genesis! I can still play this track all day long and never ever be sick of it! I had the privilege of seeing the early Genesis in concert, I count myself a lucky man!

  48. s.... ....

    Absolutely superb!!💪

  49. t.... ....

These guys sound better than ever. So happy the torch is being carried so brightly.

    Beautiful version of a masterpiece.

  61. b.... j....

Absolutely fabulous, for me Genesis without Hackett or Gabriel are not Genesis, just prior to watching this i watched firth of fifth from the same concert, for all "older genesis fans the Hackett concerts are far better than the Tamla motown version.

    b.... j....

Genesis without Gabriel and Hackett was just Phil Collins Pop shit. Sorry but it's true.
