Hackett, Steve - The Lamia Lyrics

The scent grows richer, he knows he must be here
He finds a long passageway lit by chandelier
Each step he takes, the perfumes change
From familiar fragrance to flavours strange
A magnificent chamber meets his eye
Inside, a long rose-water pool
Is shrouded by fine mist
Stepping in the moist silence, with a warm breeze he's gently kissed

Thinking he is quite alone
He enters the room, as if it were his own
But ripples on the sweet pink water
Reveal some company unthought of
Rael stands astonished doubting his sight
Struck by beauty, gripped in fright
Three vermilion snakes of female face
The smallest motion, filled with grace
Muted melodies fill the echoing hall
But there is no sign of warning in the siren's call
"Rael welcome, we are the Lamia of the pool
We have been waiting for our waters to bring you cool"

Putting fear beside him
He trusts in beauty blind
He slips into the nectar, leaving his shredded clothes behind
"With their tongues, they test
Taste and judge all that is mine
They move in a series of caresses
That glide up and down my spine

As they nibble the fruit of my flesh, I feel no pain
Only a magic that a name would stain
With the first drop of my blood in their veins
Their faces are convulsed in mortal pains
The fairest cries, 'We all have loved you, Rael'"

Each empty snakelike body floats
Silent sorrow in empty boats
A sickly sourness fills the room
The bitter harvest of a dying bloom
Looking for motion I know I will not find
I stroke the curls now turning pale
In which I'd lain entwined
"Oh Lamia, your flesh that remains I will take as my food"
It is the scent of garlic that lingers
On my chocolate fingers
Looking behind me, the water turns icy blue
The lights are dimmed and once
Again the stage is set for you

Steve Hackett and Steve Rothery ❣️

  3. J.... M....

Saw Steve's Genesis Revisited tour just last week in Los Angeles. I hope he does the complete Lamb album at some point. It would be epic.

    J.... M....

I love the Lamb but that's not gonna happen. The Lamb was more Tony and Peter's baby. Steve didn't get to contribute enough to feel the same attachment to it as he feels toward Selling England.
    Nice thought, though.

  4. E.... ....

This guy on vocals is awful. I wish they used Nad Sylvan, he's got the pipes!

  30. M.... S....

Damn, I wanted hackett to play the Riddle, that would have been mind blowing

  31. C.... C....

the singer is doing a good job. his voice doesnt fit the song that much, but he's doing great with what he has

  32. M.... D....

Certainly a treasured moment in my life to have seen Steve Hackett and his talented troupe give these compositions their just due. No doubt they will stand the test of time.

  33. T.... W....

where"s Nad when you really need him?

  34. F.... L....

I never tire of listening to Steve Hackett play the guitar.

  35. G.... M....

Agree, but I think Tony banks could do similar, leading Genesis dongs with keyboards.

  36. T.... D....

Me encanta, esta música es eterna, me gustará siempre.

  37. M.... R....

Beautiful version, great combo Nik-Steve. I have listen to this version many times

TREMENDOUS NIK KERSHAW !! WHATTA A MONUMENT FROM A MAN!

  39. l.... ....

I love this song. Great job from Nik. After The Fugitive came out in 83 I then heard Nik’s first single and thought it was a new Tony Banks track! Not surprised when they later worked together. He was a long time fan I think.

  40. S.... ....

    That singer blows.

  46. T.... V....

Músicas que jamais esquecerei, sou um eterno admirador de Steve Hackett e do Genesis, maravilhoso! Há anos que ouço e jamais me canso de ouvir!

  47. S.... G....

At risk of upsetting the PG Purists , i suggest Steve H should sign-up more 80s pop icons - Morrissey singing " for absent friends" The Cures' Robert Smith singing on "the knife " and Boy George doing "Entanglement " plus PG covering The Cures' " one hundred years ". Love from the extreme East of the Westcountry -Hordle on Sea 😎PS there must be an old Genesis tune with a great video for AdamAnt ....

  48. M.... M....

Live music is better bumper stickers should be issued

  49. M.... M....

    I love acid

  50. B.... B....

Jeezussss ..... Hackett AND Rothery. Together. It just doesn't get *any* better.
Thought, 'Great opportunity to see who has the edge' ........
Slid the picture up so couldn't see it on screen.
Couldn't tell where one left off and the other began.
Is Geniuses the plural of Genius?

  51. R.... r....

siamo ai livelli massimi di musica

  52. D.... P....

Para mí es muy grato ver a uno de los primeros músicos de Génesis, ya que toda mi vida los he seguido y escuchado. Tengo 58 años y los seguiré escuchando.

  53. C.... K....

    ...Where's PETER.!!!

  54. L.... ....

    Guitar solo0ff! I call a draw! Incredible

  55. L.... M....

Steve is the original sound for early, early Genesis. You, Sir, are in need of a monumental Thank You! From all around ! A fine guitarist for sure. Thank you Steve Hackett. Wonderful music.

  56. C.... S....

Thanks for the music, it makes me happy

  57. S.... P....

Is the full concert - including this version of The Lamia with Nik Kershaw - available to buy on DVD? If so which one?

  58. s.... ....

I've tried... I promise you I've tried my very best... but this is one of Genesis's masterpieces and the vocals don't cut it.... not even close to cutting it... in fact they spoil it!

  59. D.... C....

Steve is a real les paul master! His gtr tone on the end solo is absolutely incendiary!!!

    D.... C....

THIS !! although it is NOT technically an LP, he used a 58 LP most of the time with Genesis..and this is a custom guitar he has which does as you can clearly hear the beloved tone of the Les Paul...the difference between his and Rothery's tone is staggering...the les paul stands out and cuts through....greatness indeed..

  60. j.... ....

Nick Kershaw reminds me of A. Martinez here.

  61. F.... M....

Ideal Genesis reunion must be a union with this Steve's band or half of them. Can you imagine that?

  62. R.... P....

Kershaw, Hackett and the god himself on stage! can't believe...

  63. A.... v....

So glad mr. Hackett is still touring the world, treating these old magnificent songs with such class, mastery and skill.

  64. A.... J....

    7:10 7:40

  65. A.... K....

....dzieki Stevemu ,muzyka Genesis nigdy sie nie zestarzeje....

  66. d.... ....

    Gorgeous. Brings me to tears.

  67. m.... ....

I just can't stand that god awful voice - talk about slaughtering a classic ! And before anyone says the obvious ... yes I could have done better myself ... my cat could have done better.

  68. p.... v....

    alla voce nik kershaw

  69. S.... ....

I love this.... always have and always will...

  70. M.... M....

The Lamia was maybe my top favourite track on the somewhat uneven "The Lamb" (yes, it's the old Genesis album I like the less, apart from the first). Even though I've never been a fan of Nick Kershaw, I love this version... The guitar duel between the 2 Steve is .... wonderful !

    M.... M....

Marc Moingeon Uneven?? The Lamb is an absolute masterpiece without any weak spot, but The Lamia I love the most😊

    M.... M....

Ah ! Always a matter of tastes, as always, Willy. :o)  There are magnificent tracks on it  like this one, "the Carpet Crawlers", "Silent Sorrow...", and some really catchy, driving pieces like "In The Cage".. but some parts don't appeal to me, not only "the Waiting Room". Funnily enough, some sounds and styles remind me of what we could find later in the early 80's, I think... On Gabriel's "4" and on "Abacab" and "Mama" ("Back in New York City", for instance, which I never liked, a pity as it's a first track on side 2...), but in a rawer form. Peter Gabriel's vocals are sometimes not too fantastic either ; and it's the way they're mixed that is sometimes not to my taste... too raw. I think he did better on his complete re-recording of the vocal parts featured on the "Live Archive" version of the album. This man needs reverb ! And there's hardly any on "The Lamb".
As for me, first, I don't care that it's a concept album.. Plus the story and the lyrics are completely crazy to me, more than what Gabriel had written before, indeed.  I'm not that fond of the production, that has finally been enhanced when they remixed/remastered the album in the 2000's. I'll play it again today, just to make sure but after 35 years, I think my opinion won't change much.

    M.... M....

@Marc Moingeon what a horrendous analysis

    M.... M....

This is *not* an analysis, only a few details to explain that I am not so fond of the album (although I globally enjoy a good part of it, don't get me wrong). What is funny is that the four other members of the band apart from Gabriel said they didn't like it so much in a common interview that I read dating back to 1977... Obviously, some of them changed opinion after some years... given the journalist really trancribed their real words.
I love early Genesis, I've gtivne tons of time an dmoney to promote some artists I like but I feel the right to keep my free-will. Some fans just can't stand any criticism, I got used to this a long time ago.

  71. V.... C....

è sempre piacevole ascoltarla, chiunque la canti!

  72. t.... ....

l'ha rovinata la canzone... ma dai!!! per piacere ci vuole coraggio a cantare cosi',

  73. m.... ....

    Best version ever!

    m.... ....

    micheloderso non diciamo fesserie!

  74. t.... ....

l cry when l hear this song. The _chords lament_.   Awe inspiring......sigh.

  75. B.... E....

A brilliant version with Nik Kershaw doing a great vocal. Thought the guitar solos were a bit long though.

    B.... E....

Such a joy seeing Hackett trade off with Rothery...they could have gone on longer as far as I'm concerned!

    B.... E....

Brian Edward Kershaw did a passable job, but Gabriel is from another planet.

  76. T.... T....

    thanks PETER GABRIEL <3

    T.... T....

Gabriel , la voix de l Histoire

  77. F.... R....

La canzone è meravigliosa, non mi piace la voce solista.

    F.... R....

hai ragione ! siamo abituati bene ...

    F.... R....

Per una volta non facciamo i nostalgici...l'interpretazione di Kershaw è notevole..diversa ma notevole..!!

  78. O.... M....

I think that this version, with a good, sensible singer, sounds even better than the original, where Peter wants to overpower the rest of the band.

    O.... M....

i kinda think that Peter Gabriel was a nutso..!lol I grew up in the 60's/70's musical era...I am a fan of singing guitars , ala Pink Floyd, King Crimson, scorpions, Moody Blues, and yes, Genesis- I like the guitars that put goosebumps on my arms....!! how about Y'all?

  79. M.... R....

    utterly superb

  80. W.... ....

This is one of the most beautifull songs that i've heard in my life!!

  81. L.... B....

    Fantastic dvd and cds.

  82. J.... W....

This is the best version I've heard. Tremendous in every way. A classic! Thanks for sharing this with us. Gary

    J.... W....

    Huh? Better than the original?

    J.... W....

better or not better I don t know. but for sure that version brings his own feelings and touch it's a work of love and passion .

    J.... W....

astro farhi Peter ' s voice is unreachable, Tony on keyboard is far top good...I stop

  83. J.... S....

to date this is THE BEST MUSIC/VIDEO I OWN!!!

    J.... S....

i have to agree Jeff its outstanding, and i have listened to some stuff over the years.Lyrics are light years away from anything i have ever listened to.

  84. j.... l....

when steve left genesis sold out to commercialism there now dead hes not

    j.... l....

quand Hackett est partie oublie Genesis , déja que Peter était déja parti , ouch ! ce fut la fin de la grande époque

  85. A.... S....

Avec Maggie Reilly, c'était assurément meilleur, c'est dommage car ce morceau est vraiment super.

  86. l.... ....

It's nothing without Peter Gabriel I think.

  87. o.... ....

Two Steves on guitars (Hackett and Rothery) are awesomes. Thanks for the posting. Дякую. Greetings from Ukraine.

  88. d.... ....

WAIT ! IS THAT NICK KERSHAW? FUCKING AWESOME!

    d.... ....

Nick slays this song!! I love it!!!

  89. f.... ....

This is the song that i want to listen before I take off from this world!

  90. l.... ....

    @DarkeningSkies

" No, I do not think Rothery adds anything particularly significant to this piece"

    I pity your cognitive resources

    l.... ....

Your joking right ? right ?

  91. T.... L....

Before Abacab, Genesis' music was never really conducive to instrumentalist noodling. There's a reason why Banks and Hackett's solos were almost always played verbatim live: it's Program Music. Everything is carefully constructed to convey imagery and nothing is haphazard or taken for granted. Not that other rock bands did not also have imagery in their music, but the ensemble nature of Genesis' chord work and motion really stood out best when things were kept deliberate and precise.

  92. e.... b....

Thank you Mr Hackett for re living my memory of good ol' Genesis

  93. g.... ....

    Great Nik!!

  94. m.... ....

For me, the single greatest guitar solo in the history of music is the last few minutes of the original recording of "The Lamia"   It's been, what, 40 years since it was released?  You'd have thought I'd be sick of it by now.  No.  Oh, no.

    m.... ....

Agreed ! Quite beautiful and heartfelt. The guitar says what words cannot.

  95. P.... ....

    i like it more than ... ;-)

  96. M.... W....

One of the best song I've ever hear ! Genesis ... what from 38 years my favourite.

  97. H.... C....

Very good...and the teclist is perfect!!!

  98. F.... T....

STEVE HACKETT . Una gran pérdida para Génesis.

  99. J.... S....

Great singer but NOT appropriate for this piece whatsoever -- sadly :-(

    J.... S....

This song is sadly himselfe. But totally grate interpratet in my ears! The giant Philosoph, Schopenhauer said: the gratest Enemy of Brrilliance, is more Brrilliance.
    Greetings from Germany.
