Hackett, Steve - Can-Utility And The Coastliners Lyrics

The scattered pages of a book by the sea
Held by the sand washed by the waves
A shadow forms cast by a cloud
Skimming by as eyes of the past, but the rising tide
Absorbs them effortlessly claiming

They told of one who tired of all singing
Praise him, praise him
We heed not flatterers he cried
By our command, waters retreat
Show my power, halt at my feet
But the cause was lost
Now cold winds blow

Far from the north overcast ranks advance
Fear of the storm accusing with rage and scorn
The waves surround the sinking throne
Singing crown him, crown him
"Those who love our majesty show themselves!"
All bent their knee

But he forced a smile even though
His hopes lay dashed where offerings fell
Nothing can my peace destroy as long as no one smiles
More opened ears and opened eyes
And soon they dared to laugh
See a little man with his face turning red
Though his story's often told you can tell he's dead

Hackett, Steve Can-Utility And The Coastliners Comments
  1. d.... ....

Almost fifty years old! Can you believe it? 50 f... years and still fresh! Who composes stuff like that nowadays? This is legendary and this was an aera, when music still had class, value and meaning. When musicians had to SAY something! I could be weeping of joy and sorrow when I hear Steve Hackett keep the memories alive. Joy, because of the sheer brilliance and sorrow, because these days are gone forever.

  2. M.... R....

Absolutely the best song of Genesis, but I prefere with Steve Hackett, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and Tony Banks...

  3. h.... ....

Absolutely superb from the whole band. Nad Sylvan is outstanding as always, seriously no-one else could do justice to these incredible early Genesis classics. As for Steve Hackett ..........legend 👍

  4. O.... E....

    Nad Sylvan is quite disturbing

  5. S.... G....

Drummer looks a bit like James the cop from the series Glitch.

  6. R.... A....

    Please. Thank you.
Please let this stay up a while.
    ( How I miss italics.)
Upon discovery of this post, I had to take a breather, just 1:30 into it.

  18. C.... K....

Mr. Hackett and friends (and I include tech staff here) never feels to bring back these 50 years old/new tracks back to us. I love my vinyl, but how is it possible that this sounds as vibrant as the original? Better? Now, there is a question.

    STEVE hackett COMPOSED Gernesis 1971

  26. j.... p....

When Steve Hackett comes with Genesis a jounalist ask Tony Banks about the new guitarist , Tony Banks = Steve Hackett a very good guitarist , and do you know what ? He compose

  27. k.... k....

Steve Hacketts' videos have the highest like to dislike ratio of anything on the internet. (That means he is good.)

  28. J.... M....

Drummer in middle section is a bit weak and stiff comparing with Phil Collins original performance. Singer on the other hand is a copy of Gabriel!

    J.... M....

Listen to his (Nad Sylvan) solo albums, they are great

  29. F.... S....

    What does "can-utility" mean?

    F.... S....

The title refers to the legend of King Canute - Gabriel did a play on words and referred to him as Can-Utility in the title. If you read up on the story of King Canute, the song makes a bit more sense.

  30. M.... ....

Bravo !! And Roger is the king of keys. Brilliantly done !!

  31. K.... M....

I guessed that that was Mr. Stolt...🤪

    K.... M....

    I think it is.

    K.... M....

    @silasarthas it is

  32. F.... S....

    Bravo!!! 👏👏👏

  33. d.... k....

Perfect....Excellent band. Wonderful old songs. Thanks for posting AND keeping good music alive!

  34. S.... W....

Nad Sylvan siply splendid, gorgeous !

  35. C.... L....

    Wonderful

  36. E.... A....

    Genios. Hermosisimo. Emocionante!!!!

  37. E.... F....

    Fabulous, just brilliant!

  38. c.... ....

Needs a better singer. At times Hackett’s band are too note perfect these days and lack the raw power and spontaneity of his earlier bands.

    c.... ....

Were you born a twat? Or what happened to you?

    c.... ....

What a tosser you are! (cs0rpc I mean)

    c.... ....

@Nad Sylvan Official you tell 'em Nad, you are the best damn singer out there

    c.... ....

@Nad Sylvan Official looking forward to seeing you perform with Steve Hackett in Adelaide next May!

    c.... ....

Too note perfect? Would you rather they played random bum notes? But then, if they did that on purpose, I gUess it wouldn't have any spontaneity either. And Nad, as always, sings this superbly.

  39. T.... B....

Without Steve we wouldnt had still Genesis. Very poor for the other members.

  40. A.... L....

What if Steve was joined by Mike, Tony and Peter. Imagine them live! And they could be joined by Phil on some of the songs sittning on his chair...
Chester and Phil’s son would obviously be the drummers and why not bring Daryl as well! And Ant Phillips as special guest (as Phil) on some songs!

Dream on... But it would be magical!👍
Thank you Steve for keeping Genesis legacy alive! ❤️

    A.... L....

    You have just described the definition of H E A V E N

    A.... L....

    Maximiliano Borges 👍😊

  41. M.... ....

Note perfect. The singer could be a bit more demonstrative without mimicking Gabriel. Why is Steve Hackett stood up?

    M.... ....

He began standing up before he left Genesis (though he still sits down, too, sometimes).

    M.... ....

Sitting was never his idea in the first place-when he joined Genesis, the rest of the band imposed the idea on him. It was Bruford on the 1976 tour who suggested he go back to standing. Playing seated was only for a very tiny span of his career.

  42. S.... ....

    Meravigliosa

  43. j.... b....

Nad Sylvan is great on all of Peter Gabriel /Genesis songs.

    j.... b....

Often while listening I forget it's Nad and not Peter Gabriel. So good!

    j.... b....

Don't forget his solo albums, which feature prog greats like Hackett and Levin. Easily some of the best modern prog, would love for a few songs off of them to be played at a Hackett show.

  44. S.... S....

Wonderful, singer doing a great job.

  45. S.... C....

    Magnificent!

  46. A.... T....

great execution of one of the best ever G's songs!!!!

  47. E.... v....

This revival of Genesis is so good, Steve even polishes the sound from the seventies into something fitting into current times

    E.... v....

Eric van de Luytgaarden Agreed. If only people today could listen to this and realize what they’ve been missing out on for years.

  48. M.... J....

I listen to this a lot, since I was a young man, and never gets boring.

  54. a.... g....

Be thankful Steve is playing the 'proper' Genesis songs not the pop rubbish of the Phil Collins Band,Dad Sylvan is a worthy Gabriel replacement

    a.... g....

No Reply At All is rubbish? And Phil was part of a trio. Rutherford and Banks were equal partners.

    a.... g....

@Hank Kornblut I agree. Nothing on Trick of The Tail nor Wind & Wuthering (surely the post Gabriel high marks) could be considered 'pop' or 'rubbish'.

    a.... g....

@So Angry yeah but Hackett still played on those. Genesis died when Steve left

    a.... g....

@Brian B That's an opinion and I understand it. That said, I saw them on the Duke tour in 1980 and they were phenomenal. They had their moments - and greater commercial success - post Hackett/Gabriel but in my opinion the musical Zenith was those 2 albums.

  55. K.... ....

anywere you looking at there s stolt ! my favorite !

  56. T.... L....

This is the track where I really miss Phil Collins' energy on the drums. Gary O'Toole is competent here, but is just missing that extra that Collins could bring to a track.

    T.... L....

I do not share your opinion. Gary O'Toole is a fantastic drummer, not just here but anywhere else. Not just competent -- he plays elegant.

    T.... L....

I know what you mean, and agree. His drums sound duller.

    T.... L....

Agreed, but Gary did Collins’ drumming well. Unfortunately he left and now Hackett is going left and right with drummers. If only Collins was still able to drum...

  57. T.... B....

Without Steve we woulnd have Genesis today. Great band, great singer too.

  58. j.... p....

Nad est sublim/ et c est Normal

  59. T.... ....

Glad to see Steve is bringing some less heard songs from Genesis back from the dead!

  61. l.... c....

magnifiquement joué et en plus un son de très haute qualité

  62. C.... C....

    Absolutely brilliant!!!!

  63. T.... ....

Bravo!!!! Long live live music and Genesis sounds!

  64. S.... ....

There was a time when Steve would adamantly refuse to perform Genesis back catalogue. I think it's great that he changed his mind but still I can't get over the fact that he quit the band because he said that he was sick of playing those songs night after night.

    S.... ....

Also because he felt he was constantly getting pushed aside as a songwriter, and perhaps because he sensed that the band were moving away from more complex songs (the kind he wanted to do) towards simpler formats.

    S.... ....

Louise X Ok Louise, point taken. I love your name by the way.

    S.... ....

    @SuperGrayeagle Hmm, I like it too. ;)

    S.... ....

Louise X you seem to know a lot about Steve and Genesis. Your comment was spot on, I'm impressed Louise. Have you ever seen the Canadian prog rock band The Musical Box?

    S.... ....

Steve left the band for numerous reasons, and seemed to have wanted to avoid genesis for a while, but I’m glad he’s back to playing the old songs again.

  65. L.... o....

Wow real impressed with that singer been Genesis fan since a kid I love seeing this thanks Steve Hackett for keeping the sound alive This style never die anyway in our Times everybody knows music he’s bringing toys out of the attic and drag out sounds from the Dungeons volt

  66. j.... i....

What else... another good one !

  67. C.... C....

Anyone seeking proof that there is a God about need only to recognize and appreciate the simple fact that Steve Hackett is out there in the world keeping the music of the only era of Genesis that actually matters ALIVE!
    I LOVE EARLY GENESIS!!!
    Bless you Mr. Hackett.
    BTW...
Your solo stuff is also incredible.

  68. L.... F....

    Bad vocal

    L.... F....

Marko Wojtkowiak Same here. I don’t know why so many people give him shit on his singing!

    L.... F....

I disagree, he is really professional and gives a lot of drama with colourful use of his voice and slightly eccentric presence, which was highly valued in the days this tune was recorded for the first time.

    L.... F....

Lala Fitri .. bad comment.. Agree with @TheBlueComet832

    L.... F....

    Lala Fitri lumayanlah vocal Nad.

    L.... F....

    @TheBlueComet832 "muh Peter Gabriel"

  69. M.... W....

the only person who would thumb this down would be tony banks.

    M.... W....

But Foxtrot is Tony's favorite Genesis album...

    M.... W....

brain Hackett play the ciaconne of bach men a genius men more than Genesis he s a God of music men just try to play the Coacone if Bach , just serious

    M.... W....

Allan Matthews Tony said Duke was his favorite in the 2007 remaster interviews

  70. H.... H....

So great! So brilliant! Thank You!!

  71. M.... S....

Steve Hackett is turning into a legend in my eyes with each of these videos. (I’m partially ashamed to say that I first heard him with “GTR” ... and thought “... is he good enough to share a stage with Steve Howe?” ... d’uh! MORE than a match! He is awesome. Thank you for sharing this.

    M.... S....

Steve Howe doesn't hold a candle to Hackett nowadays, """"Yes"""" aka The Steve Howe Band plays stuff at 80% speed and are sloppy. Hackett nails everything he does

  72. l.... ....

brilliant stuff from each one of the guys total professionals obvs

  73. I.... J....

    Only you Steve Hacket!!!

  74. K.... M....

Very unfortunately, You Tube won’t let me subscribe to your channel.

  75. K.... M....

    Nice job, Mr. Sylvan.

  76. v.... ....

Many cover bands use period keyboards, like a real mellotron. Why do the old prog musician use modern gear that poorly emulate their old instruments ? They sound like shit since the end of the 70's, it's time to wake up and get the good old tools back !

    v.... ....

Mellotron samples can sound pretty accurate, but I do miss the real Hammond organ and the Moog Taurus bass pedals.

    v.... ....

"pretty accurate" should be good enough for decent cover bands, not for the composer !

    v.... ....

I think it would have to be because of the cost of the instruments, to own, to move them around on the road, to fix them etc. The new stuff just works right, but I to miss that 'sound'.

    v.... ....

As a fan and a musician active in that era, the main reason you hear them at all now is because of samplers. Mellotrons were evil and hideous things to live with, and more than once I saw performances where not a single note was produced by the poor keyboardist. As for this band-you're hearing samples of actual Mellotron tapes used at the time, reliably and in tune at every performance. It's not a crap synthesizer.

    v.... ....

@Philip Mastman Rutherford didn't start using a Moog until 1976, well after Foxtrot. He was using a Dewtron at this time.

  77. S.... K....

    P.... O....

    I'm jealous, lol! Cheers!

  88. t.... ....

keyboard player way too loud in some parts, but really, a beautiful overall sound. great singer too!

  89. P.... l....

Hahah!! I just noticed the little movement at the end of the song that Hackett does with his hand and his face saying none verbally «there you go» 6:28, Hackett seems like such a nice guy

  90. P.... l....

I always loved the instrumental bridge in that song the rhythm of the guitares with the powerfull mellotron over them, epic song indeed

  91. J.... P....

INCREDIBLE! Beautifully recreated and sung exquisitely with reverence.

    J.... P....

Yep, and the second half of this offers one of the most powerful images ever in music of the sea rising into a storm. Everything about that section conjures up heavy rolling waves, froth, dark clouds, gusting winds and the majesty of the ocean.

  92. X.... ....

if it was raw many people would say it sounds no clear no perfect, well for me it is too much not raw, not closer how it should be or how it would be if made and remade by real genesis in 72 and 73 if they had mode to play a lot more on stage, how it would be if choiced to stay on genesis live summer 1972 album, do you understand what i mean?
