Guy Clark - Magnolia Wind Lyrics

I'd rather sleep in a box like a bum on the street
Than a fine feather bed without your little ol' cold feet
And I'd rather be deaf, dumb, and stone blind
Than to know that your mornings will never be mine

And I'd rather die young than to live without you
I'd rather go hungry than eat lonesome stew
You know it's once in a lifetime and it won't come again
It's here and it's gone on a magnolia wind

I'd rather not walk through the garden again
If I can't catch your scent on a magnolia wind

Well if it ever comes time that it comes time to go
Sis' pack up your fiddle, Sis' pack up your bow
If I can't dance with you then I won't dance at all
I'll just sit this one out with my back to the wall

I'd rather not hear pretty music again
If I can't hear your fiddle on a magnolia wind

If I can't catch your scent on a magnolia wind

I got to play fiddle in The Quaalude County Country Band out of Bellingham Washington. We played this song, I got introduced to Guy's music, my heart sings with him ebber since. Oh, the motto of the band was "slow down the hoedown". One of the great times in my life. Shout out to Ben, Spencer, Farah and Kevin.

It’ s awesome how these guys and gals can take these old tired, overused words and turn them into poetry full of imagery and beauty...Prine, Clark, Van Zandt, et al.

This may be a stupid question..but is it Guy and Sussanna on the cover of the tribute album ?Thanks.

    I.... ....

InverseAgonist yes it is--and he apparently drove that VW bus for a long lo g time.

    I.... ....

    Yes it is.

He probably was thinking about Susanna with this song, but it is one of four songs he a d Shawn Camp wrote about the Sis Draper character-the fiddler. Thus the "Sis pack up your fiddle and bow" lyrics fit. Revardless, it is just a beautiful love song.

What a great song, one of the best I’ve ever heard. I just discovered it.  I’m 46 and have been listening to old country and bluegrass most of my life, I don’t know how I ever missed this song.

    D.... S....

I have the same reaction. My darling wife died recently, and I paid attention to this song for the first time. What an amazing piece of art! It captures how I feel!

    D.... S....

And then there's "My Favorite Picture of You". The night he died, I read the story behind the song, listened to it, and couldn't stop crying for waaaaay longer than I wanted. Thinking of my little brother & me listening to "Old No. 1" when it came out in '75, all the beauty in that LP, all the miles under his wheels, and mine, since then. Let him roll.......

  29. R.... J....

great touching song !! thank you guy 1

What a precious gift, what a lyricist, what lasting melodies, what a life, what a love, two people one soul, and the great ones that passed through their door, and filtered their art through their experiences together. To many to mention. The magic of their scent will forever be floating on the Magnolia Wind. Guy and Suzanna, together forever....Stuff That Works.
