Guy Clark - Hank Williams Said It Best Lyrics

One man's hawk is another man's dove, one man's hug is another man's shove
One man's rock is another man's sand, one man's fist is another man's hand
One man's tool is another man's toy, one man grief is another man's joy
One man's squawk is another man's sing, one man's crutch is another man's wing

One man's pride is another man's humble, one man's step is another man's stumble
One man's pleasure is another man's pain, one man's loss is another man's gain
One man's can is another man's grail, one man's curse is another man's sail
One man's right is another man's wrong, one man's curse is another man's song

For every father's daughter
For every mother's son
The only think the same
Is that is ain't for everyone
Hank Williams said it best
He said it a long time ago
"Unless you have made no mistakes in your life
Be careful of stones that you throw"

One man's deuce is another man's ace, one man's back is another man's face
One man's reason is another man's rhyme, one man's dollar is another man's dime
One man's tree is another man's post, one man's angel is another man's ghost
One man's rain is another man's drought, one man's hope is another man's doubt

One man's false is another man's fair, one man's toup is another man's hair
One man's hand is another man's stub, one man's feast is another man's grub
One man's dread is another man's dream, one man's sigh is another man's scream
One man's water is another man's wine, one man's daughter leave another man's cryin'

For every father's daughter
For every mother's son
The only think the same
Is that is ain't for everyone
Hank Williams said it best
He said it a long time ago
"Unless you have made no mistakes in your life
Be careful of stones that you throw"

One man's famine is another man's feast, one man's pet is another man's beast
One man's bat is another man's ball, one man's art is another man's scrawl
One man's friend is another man's foe, one man's Joesph is another man's Joe
One man's hammer is another man's nail, one man's freedom is another man's jail

One man's road is another man's rut, one man's if is another man's but
One man's treasure is another man's trash, one man's landin' is another man's crash
One man's word is another man's lie, one man's dirt is another man's sky
One man's skin is another man's color, one man's killer is another man's brother

For every father's daughter
For every mother's son
The only think the same
Is that is ain't for everyone
Hank Williams said it best
He said it a long time ago
"Unless you have made no mistakes in your life
Be careful of stones that you throw"

How did I miss Guy Clark? Many of hos songs were made popular by others. Today ai came across him and been listening to him sing for two hours. His analogies are pictures that paint the images and faces of a mans walk on this earth that passes quickly and each transition starts with grief, moves to acceptance and on to contentment just before the next phase begins and we repeat tgat process til we are no more. I feel that explained in his songs or at least exemplified. Thanks, Guy, for passing thru and leaving your hearts work behind.

  11. P.... F....

Why had I taken so long to discover Guy’s powerful works? Although, I will not miss any more.

    P.... F....

guy is the best without question, but if you haven't discovered his good buddy townes van zandt, then you're in for a real treat... check out live at the old quarter....it's by far his best in my opinion

    "Hank Williams said it best

I think he might have gotten that particular saying from another guy though. :-D

    a good man

  19. K.... D....

does anyone know if Jerry Douglas is playing dobro on this?

  20. D.... L....

I make up songs and friends lie to me that they resonate. Guy Is in his own stratosphere. Why he isn't more well known doesn't speak well of a culture that worships Carneys like D Drumpf

    D.... L....

douglas lowe, in what world do you live in that you think this genius isn't more well known. just because you don't listen or are aware of something doesn't mean the entire world is the same as you. this man is a legend in folk and country and has been for more years than im assuming you could piss by yourself. why can't you people just appreciate something you have just discovered and keep your fucking mouths shut.

  21. R.... J....

    silent prayers ......guy !

  22. U.... G....

There's a lot to be admired in a musician who can communicate through song and remain humble. Guy Clark doesn't try to transcend reality with his music. Grounded and humble, his raw, pained singing connects with you on a very personal level and tells more of the human condition in it's ragged glory more than any Hendrix solo could do. He doesn't strive to be mystifying or god-like. He lays out the truth and trusts the words he speaks holds power.

    U.... G....

I'm usually full of words... but not now, you laid it out perfectly. Or to put it another way (using your own words) You "laid out the truth and trust the words you spoke hold power" Bravo!

    U.... G....

    @Mark8395217 Cheers!

    U.... G....

i hope you have also had the great joy in listening to guy's good friend townes van zandt... i would say together they form the most formidable songwriting duo ever

  23. M.... ....

I read a quote today that says .. Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.

    M.... ....

Great thought, thanks for sharing! It really is a matter of perspective isn't it? Kinda like Ray Wiley Hubbard's "Get outta that rut and into that groove"

    M.... ....

sometimes it is good to cry to release your emotions or frustratians and you can have tears of joy

    M.... ....

im sitting here breaking my heart I just lost my husband, thankyou for that quote I really needed that xxx ur an angel

    M.... ....

@Stephanie Hall I love it extremely. I do think I saw it as a Dr Seuss quote. Whatever the source, I love that sentiment/quote.

  24. A.... O....

Another legend bites the dust.R.I.P Guy.

  25. M.... ....

Please stop saying RIP ! It is such a dumb and unthoughtful thing. (Rest in Peace) ? What the Hell does this mean ?! Please people. Think for a moment. If there is truly something you like about the artist, take a few moments, step aside, and simply put a few short sentences together ... out of respect for Guy. Please. Thank you !

    M.... ....

RIP is actually a very respectful thing and most people don't have the time to write all that much about Guy, so they go with a simple, yet respectful comment by saying RIP.

    M.... ....

I get it Michael. Thanks for your comment.

    M.... ....

geez louise, fuck you moron, go troll another site, this is for music lovers no one cars about your stupid remarks

it is cares, not cars. Be careful of stones that you throw

    RIP GUY

  33. 1.... ....

Lots of deep images come from these rhyming lyrics. He's great.

  34. s.... ....

"One man's killer is another man's brother"

    So true.

  35. J.... B....

    Brilliant!

  36. r.... ....

Truer words you'll not soon hear . Guy Clark not only writes towards every man,but inside knows the Truth about Life, and reveals it in his lyrics...

  37. M.... ....

It's a play on words. Guy Clark does this excellently !

  38. j.... d....

he speaks a truth so strong it gives me chillz

  39. M.... w....

I don't "particularly" want to offend anyone, but Hank couldn't sit in the same room with this guy. I'm a little too old for heros, but if I weren't, my hero would be Guy Clark.

    M.... w....

    Hank is music.

    M.... w....

+Tim Denman And this man (Hank Williams) is who he (Guy Clark) is giving honor to in this song. Guy Clark is pretty awesome, isn't he ?

    M.... w....

+Michael wolfenbarger Have you lost your mind? Hank is a Legend and Guy Clark is too! They're both awesome.

    M.... w....

but you do offend, you offend music, hank was a genius and lived the songs he wrote, guy is a genius and great also, it offends the memory of so many of our real legends that we have lost over the years when anyone compares one to the other, and i can't even imagine how anyone can mention a name of some of the pitiful so called singers of today to these real artists.

    M.... w....

Hmmm, what a thought. Co-writes in heaven?

  40. C.... W....

    I love this song....

    C.... W....

+Chuck Williams You have good taste. Guy Clark devoted his life to music and to simply get a point across .. not always an easy task. I believe he did a very fine job.

  41. g.... s....

one man's can is another man's grail. man oh man guy can turn a phrase. thankz.

  42. y.... ....

You're a douche. Either learn to spell, or quit making comments when you're drunk. Douche!! Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle, all great song writers, just not sellouts. They do what they do, and they are very good at it. They don't fit into any specific marketable genre, that's why they have such a loyal following. Kinda like the Dead. Douche!!

  43. n.... ....

Yes I second that, thanks for this

  44. B.... N....

According to Steve, someone mentioned this to Townes in a interview and ask Townes for his reaction. Townes replied I have seen Bob's bodyguards and I don't think anyone will stand on his coffee table.

  45. r.... ....

Uncle, your reply came less than an hour after I posted a link to this song on another forum tonight. I might be strange but to me that is a sign of some kind. I mean, nobody has said word one about my comment and I respond to someone on a different forum with this link today and shortly after that you said what you did. That's meant to be sorta material if you ask me. Thanks for listening to your spirit this evening. In doing so you added something to mine.

    Take care brother,

    Rolland

  46. U.... ....

Amen, brother...nearly 700+ nights later. Isn't that perfect? An imperfect stranger stumbles by your lovely comment 2 years later and is moved to tears. Where are you? Prison? ICU? Corner Office?
Did Bob have a coffee table? Are your boots made of Spanish leather? For sure, Guy tells it truer than Hank...but that might be a function of Time/fashion. Who cares? Can you hear Bob play Hard Rain? Can you hear Guy follow up with Randall Knife? All Night Long???

  47. r.... c....

is this played best in the key of "c"?

    great post

    r.... c....

Well That's what Townes woulda used likely

  48. t.... c....

    Townes?? please Bob Dylan Robbie

  49. X.... ....

"Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." Steve Earle. Do a little shuffle while you're up for Guy Clarke also, Steve. lol

  50. J.... T....

    Corrected. Thanks

  51. I.... T....

it says in your description one mans curse is another mans sail. please correct curse to anchor. Thank You

  52. J.... R....

Guy lost his son and Willie talked him into continuing his show...he knew it would do him good. From a Texan who knows what his lyrics mean.

    J.... R....

nope that was billie jo shaver and willie even paid for his sons funeral overdosed on news years eve cant recall the yr

  53. T.... ....

Yep, it was JC said that when a group of men were about to stone a woman caught in adultery. So Hank was listening in the services. Good.

  54. B.... N....

did you look up Townes Van Zandt's response to Steve Earle saying that? I love Guy but better is taking to far (equal is appropriate).

  55. H.... i....

Christ; as quoted by Hank Williams; as quoted by Guy Clark...

  56. T.... ....

    Story of my life.

  57. r.... ....

I will stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that Guy said it better than Hank! Not sure what Dylan has to do with it but I know it has something to do with Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt and how I feel deep down inside about something that seems important. Buy me another beer and I might be able to explain it better. In the meantime, this is one hell of a great tune!

    Take care,

    Rolland B. Heiss
