Guy Clark - Fort Worth Blues Lyrics

Fort Worth neon shinin' bright
Pretty lights red and blue
They shut down all the honky tonks tonight
Say a prayer or two, if they only knew

You used to say the highway was your home
But we both know that ain't true
It's just the only place a man can go
When he don't know where he's travelin' to

Colorado's always clean and healin'
Tennessee the spring is green and cool
But it never really was your kind of town
So you went around with the Fort Worth blues

Somewhere out across the Great Divide
Where the sky is wide and the clouds are few
A man can see his way clear to the light
Just hold on tight, that's all you got to do

They say in Texas the weather's always changin'
One thing change will bring is something new
Houston really ain't too bad a town
So you hung around with the Fort Worth Blues

There's a full moon over Galway Bay tonight
Silver light on green and blue
Every place I travel to find
Some kind of sign that you've been through

Amsterdam us always good for grievin'
London never fails to leave me blue
Paris really ain't my kind of town
So I walked around with the Fort Worth blues

This is such a fine rendition of this great Steve Earle song which is every bit as moving as the original and what a beautifully pure guitar sound Guy Clark laid down on this track. I play it over and over again and it always moves me to tears, so sad a song that it is.

  10. M.... B....

Had the good fortune to see the man amongst his good buddies Joe Ely, Lyle, and John. Guy makes me weep like a baby. What can I say?Peace. Out.

  12. T.... G....

I remember the old downtown before the Basses spruced it up. Liked the old better. Bars, seedy places, love it all.

  13. P.... H....

Check out the Townes Van Zandt documentary from 2005 entitled 'Be Here To Love Me'.
Guy Clark has a prominent role in the film and his eulogy at the funeral for Townes in 1997 is utterly heartbreaking.
RIP Townes. RIP Guy. RIP Merle.

    P.... H....

Guy opened the eulogy by saying "I booked this gig 30 years ago!"

Only two mentions in Comments about the man this song was written for and honors: Townes Van Zandt.

Prince died and then Guy Clark died, I can't say what I felt like when Merle died and not a single radio station in America played tribute to the man; after Prince died, the media went on and on and on; Radio stations nation wide played his music describing him as genius, maybe so, never heard too much about him except he was an excellent musician, but when Guy Clark died and no media played this hero of mine tales, and music I started calling program directors, I didn't give a shit and I told all who I called that they could kiss my ass and how could a bunch of low life s ever get to be program directors and not pay tribute to both Merle and Guy Clark; you think that country music would have had something big to honor this man, he built his own guitars for Christ sake; was he a great musician? You bet your sweet ass; he was Mark Twain and I have the home grown tomatoes to prove it. I love Guy Clark, his musical talent, his song writing ability and the way he lived his life....we should all be so lucky uh.

Mister we've never heard of each other but heard the music. Guy was one of the unappreciated. Robert Earl is too. How about Townes Van Z. Writers we all hear but don't hear about. This gettin' old out west miner listens to and loves what they have done. Mr. Keene don't go and keep up the good work

    J.... S....

I'm with you, John. Guy and Merle are among my musical heroes. I had the privilege of being backstage with Guy a couple of times. He wasn’t a particularly chatty fellow, but he was kind and gracious to me, just one more adoring fan. I lived in Redding, California for many years, near where Merle spent the last 20 or so years of his life. He was a character , to be sure, but he did local benefit concerts regularly in between his tour dates. Those two guys influenced entire generations of songwriters, and when they passed, there was barely a ripple in the media. They will be remembered, however, by all of us who benefited from their genius.

    J.... S....

    Well said...

  24. J.... C....

great duet... never saw them together... but i've been in Ft. Worth without these two and a brew... my added lyrics to the song

  25. S.... R....

What a pleasant voice Guy possessed. And of course the incomparable Emmylou made a perfect pairing. God Bless Guy Clark.

  26. R.... H....

I love Steve Earle doing this song of course, but man Guy Clark really does it justice!

  27. w.... ....

Guy and Townes are together now.God has his hands full!

    T.... R....

I bet the two of them run him ragged, oh what fun they must be having. I'm quite sure God is smiling.

    T.... R....

And Susanna. Wonder if Guy's nailed himself in the bedroom yet.

    T.... R....

That made me cry. And laugh. Thank you.

    T.... R....
