Guster - Hard Times Lyrics

Enter a scene that defies description
They say to open your mind
And take it all inside
One click at a time
We move through fictions

And send our sisters to the sacrifice
A cruel conviction
Sinister systems keep us satisfied
These are hard times

I'm breathing in the oxygen
I'm holding it through hard times
I'm breathing out in the ultrasound
Things come around in hard times

Ten thousand miles of the new prescriptions
So we open our mouths
And take 'em all inside
One pill at a time
The purist fictions

We send our sisters to the sacrifice
With cruel conviction
Sinister systems keep us satisfied
These are hard times

I'm breathing in the oxygen
I'm holding it through hard times
I'm breathing out in the ultrasound
Things come around in hard times

A new religion
We send our sisters to the sacrifice
And then the audience goes wild!

I'm breathing in the oxygen
I'm holding it through hard times
(These are hard times)
I'm breathing out in the ultrasound
Things come around in hard times
(These are hard times)
I'm breathing in the oxygen
Take it all inside, take it all inside
(I'm holding it through hard times)
I'm breathing out in the ultrasound
Things come around in hard times

  4. C.... C....

I went to their concert for my first concert of my epic life and I got back stage.

  5. .... b....

Its about world issues in 2018 to today

  7. C.... ....

  9. D.... ....

Guster I had to remember you were the " You're my Satellite" guys lol. This is sweet shit though. Reminds me of the band Yes.

    Go GUSTER!!!!!! Muah!

  11. A.... K....

We move through fictions (where genius lies); sinister systems keep us satisfied -- So true. Love this song and the ever-changing sounds of each new album. Thanks Guster, for getting us through all the hard times.

  12. Q.... A....

this song makes me so fucking emotional i swear i almost cry everytime i hear it

  13. I.... A....

just came from watching the Eagles vs. Bears game & heard the first five seconds of the song and FREAKED OUT !!!

  14. J.... B....

I wrote an article on meditation and included that music, especially music by Guster is good for the soul. Please read if so inclined --> https://hubpages.com/health/Meditation-Practices-My-Recommendations

  15. D.... M....

Just saw them last night in Saxapahaw, NC and this song kills in person. They only played a few from the new album but this song was the first they played and the place went off. The bass is fantastic and they lit up the venue. Most of their new stuff is awesome. Can't wait to see them again.

  16. G.... D....

    Bloody awesome!!!

  17. C.... K....

I genuinely love every second of this. Guster is consistently my favorite band. This song matches my life rn.

  18. J.... M....

Not a big fan of the new sound. I prefer organic to synthetic. But I still rock to their older albums!

  19. E.... E....

it's kinda hard to jam with. hard times I mean I feel it.

  20. L.... S....

so great. I've been listening to Guster since 2004 and I can not think of a better evolution of Guster's sound.

  21. C.... B....

im from Masssachusettes. sounds nothing like the guster i knew. miss them

  22. D.... ....

Goodness, Guster is terrible now. Everything after Ganging Up On The Sun has been awful. And I used to love them for their 1990s work. Oh well.

  23. A.... B....

Ummm I actually don't know how I feel about this. It's a good song, but sounds too technological to me. Too computery. I'm an old-school kind of girl who still mostly listens to the kinds of recordings where you can tell it's humans playing real, physical instruments straight into the microphones in the studio, without too many techy-sounding touch-ups to polish the final product. Does that make sense?

That's not to say I *never* enjoy songs that are more electronic-sounding. But when I've been listening to a version of Guster for the past gazillions of years where the vocals are pure and raw and beautiful, singing crisply and clearly into the mics with no fancy technology causing the voices to sound just like robots... and then I hear this new song... I just feel... let down a little. But it's a good song as far as songs go -- don't get me wrong. It's just that I really hope that the old Guster, whom I love so much, is not gone forever. However, I applaud the band for trying out some new style. It's gutsy. It's fun to branch out like that, no doubt.

    A.... B....

i agree that it's definitely a different sound for them, a lot of synth and special effects and they usually have a much simpler style... i love the song, just as much as Come Downstairs or Keep it Together, but if i hadn't known, i wouldn't have guessed it was the same band... i dig it that they're trying something new, it has kind of a Coldplay/Imagine Dragons thing to it, it kinda' reaches back to the '80s... i don't want a whole album of songs that sound just like it, but i think they really nailed this one... everyone has their own taste, i've always loved psychadelic and synth-pop styles, but nothing is for everybody, i can understand people that don't or just wanted something a little more familiar from the first single on a new album...

    A.... B....

But at the end of it all, it's the melodies that get you with Guster, and that's still there, electronics or not. After all the amazing music these guys have put out over the years, I am willing to follow wherever they lead.

    A.... B....

It does make sense. I saw an otherworldly acoustic Dispatch concert not too long ago, and my friend asked, "do the studio versions sound good, or do they sound overproduced?" It's the difference between the "stripped down" music (no unnecessary computery stuff) that you prefer and the more highly produced music with synthesizers and whatnot. I for one will be interested to hear these new songs live next time I see Guster and see how live compares to studio.

    A.... B....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nP2Ge9Y-_tc <- listen to this version. Completely acoustic.

  24. E.... E....

    Thank you for this. <333

  25. L.... L....

why is this coming up when i search Jack White?

  26. R.... ....

Yes! I love it! Just what my weekend needed.

  27. G.... D....

I didn't like any of that

  28. P.... T....

Absolutely phenomenal. Guster is one of the best bands out there. LOVE this sound

  29. j.... v....

New Guster music, awesome! Can’t wait for the whole new album.

  30. C.... H....

Thanks guys! See you in Columbus in November

  31. R.... J....

Oh.......now you lack conviction.....now it sounds like all the other crap out there....Wtf.....how athletic of you...😃😃😃😚

  32. B.... B....

It's unfortunate they don't have good enough distribution and promotion, this should have way more than 16k

  33. N.... H....

I love Adam's part in this song. Man, I wish he sang more often in the newer stuff. His singing and Brian's bongos were what the older stuff awesome

    N.... H....

There are still six songs we haven't heard. Adam's vocals may be more prominent in them.
*edit: Make that seven songs. I just saw their track list of their upcoming album, and they have a bonus track on it.

    N.... H....

The accoustic version of this song is twice as good

  34. K.... F....

Wasn't expecting new material! AWESOME! Come down to Texas!

  35. V.... ....

A friend introduced me to your music when I was in middle school. Guster was my first step into the world of music outside Backstreet Boys (listen, I was a kid, don't judge haha) and your sound blew my mind, I was obsessed and I'd listen to Lost and Gone Forever on repeat for hours and hours. Some shit went down in my life around that time and you guys helped get me through it. I always carried one of your CDs with me (or a mix with some of your songs), when I transitioned to an mp3 player I got your music first, same with iTunes, then Spotify. My music taste has branched out and changed in the fifteen years since I first heard Guster, but Lost and Gone Forever is still my absolute favorite, ride-or-die album. As in if I had to choose only one album to listen to for the rest of my life, despite all the other music I also love, it'd be no contest. This year has been incredibly rough for me, like rock-bottom after I already thought I hit rock-bottom rough. There's a light at the end of the tunnel and I know I'll make it through with time but I also know getting there is going to be a long painful process and it's been easy to fall back into feeling hopeless (the state of the world isn't helping either). But man...I just found out you released Hard Times / Don't Go (thank you Spotify!!) and thirty seconds in I was tearing up and getting goosebumps. Music hasn't made me feel like this in way too long and god what timing. This is exactly what I didn't know I needed.

Sorry for the long-winded TMI, I just wanted to let you know you were formative for me and have had a HUGE impact on my life. Thank you for making music, I wouldn't be the person I am without it and you're still keeping me going. "Things come around in hard times..."

  55. M.... ....

Been a fan from the beginning, amazes me how every 1-2 albums your sound noticeably changes and evolves....yet it’s always Guster. Enjoying this and can’t wait to hear a new album and the next evolution.

  56. b.... ....

This is different than the usual guster, but it's still guster!

  57. R.... P....

This is what indie music is going for plus its well produced. Pretty impressive, and without losing the signature "guster feel".

  58. M.... R....

Let me know when your coming back to the Marquee in Phoenix? I caught your show there a couple years ago and am looking forward to your return!

    V.... ....

    @Little_Carrot it's their GOAT!

    V.... ....

    M.... P....

    MADdaddy Productions same

  67. m.... h....

Tbh I first thought this would be a remix of that Paramore song.

  68. R.... B....

Anyone else going to mention this is the first Adam Gardner lead vocal on an album in twelve years? (albeit shared with Ryan)

    R.... B....

Hey sang lead on "Jonah", which is on the Easy Wonderful album from 2010. But, yeah it's been a minute!

    R.... B....

    “The Well” with Joe P.

    R.... B....

Jonah was a bonus track on that one!

    R.... B....

  73. A.... ....

    😭😭😭😭😭😭 thannnnnk you!

  74. A.... D....

    hecc yeah new Guster

  75. B.... ....

I love the way they changed their sound over the albums, this like ever motion even more sonically charged up

    B.... ....

Briguy2049 They said they break their albums into trilogies, so it's probably like Evermotion for a reason. And I love Evermotion.

  76. B.... L....

I’ve been waiting for what feels like forever for new music from you guys. This was worth the wait. Awesome song and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

  77. M.... ....

YOURE BACK!!!! And you still sound awesome!

  78. R.... S....

Wow, this is actually pretty awesome, i love this chill vibe to it!

    R.... S....

Did you check out the Evermotion album? It's also quite different from their older stuff, but also very different from this, which tells me that they've discovered they enjoy experimentation without boundaries, but, the reason I mention it is Evermotion has this suuuuper dreamy sound to it. At first I was very skeptical of the direction but when I looked into how it was produced and why, saw them play stuff from it live (and saw that they're still themselves), and went back to give it multiple hard listens, it really grew on me. I think the new album will be full of sonic delights for those willing to look past music that came out 15 years ago.

  79. H.... ....

    🎶🎶🎶🎶❤
