Guess Who, The - Rich World / Poor World Lyrics

Rich world, poor world, everyday it's gettin' modified
Rich world, poor world, aren't you glad you're on the western side
Individual luxury just might be the trump of the game
If you come back round with a gun at your head, I'm sure the view will never be the same

I heard something that you never been told
You'll have trouble just trying' to get old
I got something, gonna give you the word
I'm interested if you have heard
I don't really mean to bring you right down
The safest place for you's way under the ground
A hot somethin' that you never been told,
Told, you been told, you been told, you been told, you been told, you been told.

Rich world, poor world, fewer places every day to hide,
Rich world, poor world, I like it better on the Western side,
A growing epidemic of ignorance been keeping me on the run,
With a jaded ear and a whole lot of fear, we're gonna wither up one by one

I got something that you never been told
Gonna have trouble just tryin' to get old
I got something that you never heard
Come on now, just spread the word
I got somethin', gonna make you hip
Now don't go blabbin' and let it slip
For what you got I think you overpaid
I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid.

Rich world, poor world, everyday it's gettin' modified,
Rich world, poor world, I like it better on the Western side,
A growing epidemic of ignorance been keepin' us on the run,
With a jaded ear and a whole lot of fear, we're gonna wither up one by one

I heard somethin', gonna make you blue
Don't get excited cause you know it ain't new
I got somethin', gonna make you hip
Now don't go blabbin' and let it slip, you hear
Now I don't mean to be bringin' you down
You won't be safe till you're layin' in the ground
For what you got I think you overpaid
I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid.

Guess Who, The Rich World / Poor World Comments
  1. David Maye

Ben...you know your music! Best Canadian Band by far.

  2. David Maye

When The Band Was Shakin All Over.....Should have been a hit.

  3. Ben Kennedy

I thought this was an great album I have all their albums and each one was so different B Cummings seemed to sing the blues rock and even slight pop I did not know the band. Flavours album was the first album i managed to get due to ban on music in South Africa but I managed to work backwards ...just realized how much better they where to me than the Beatles but that is a matter of opinion .....much more poetry ....the best band to come out Canada by far .....

  4. Matt Sindelar

good follow up to Long Gone!

  5. Horatio Huffnagel

That's heavy and funky. I love it.

I am a Canadian and I am ashamed of being Canadian every  time I hear about the Guess Who and their song American Woman. This song is an anti USA song and the Guess Who had no just cause for this hate through their music. As far as I know the USA did not do anything to them. Part of being Canadian is respecting other countries that believe in freedom.  The Guess Who is just a bratty spoiled bunch who gave and still gives Canada a bad image.

    Daniel Hudelson

Any interpretation other than that they were being cool, anti-establishment and trying to fit in with the hip crowd (with limited success... didn't help their cred to perform at Nixon's White House) is a load of crap. That Cummings interview thing about "actually it meant Canadian Woman, I need you" is PR bullshit.
How do you get away from the the "war machines, ghetto scenes" references??
And there's no way that the majority believe it's about a particular girl.
Ain't no big whoop... it's a 40+ year old song. We're over it.

    putt1-2-putz

Every citizen of the world, in every form of government, is now taking it up the a$$

    A lesser Gracie

I doubt the Quess Who is able to give Canada a bad image.

    A lesser Gracie

I really don't know much about Canada, the politics, only that you never really hear anything negative about them. The worst thing I heard was health care cost a lot. ?????

    David Maye

No....wasn't meant to be anti American.

  7. Bryan Lund

Prophetic, yes. Interesting how a tune from the mid-70's STILL describes much of the world situation as it exists today. Burton and The Guess Who were such a great, great band. My 2nd favorite band of all time.

    Horatio Huffnagel

Whose the first if you don't mind me asking?

    Salvador Castaños

Let me take a guess 🙋... your first band ever...The Zepp?... The D.P.?.. The U2?... ohh my gosshhh... of course... THE BEATLES!!! 😉 kudos to you out in cyberspace from Guadalajara, México march/27/2019 ✌😎

  13. Larimer De León
