Guess Who, The - Proper Stranger Lyrics

Dark day, windy city
Raincoat on my shoulder
So take my hand and show me where to go
‘Cause don't you know I'm the proper stranger

Traffic lights, dusty sidewalks
Freeway people on the move
So take my hand and show me where to go
‘Cause don't you know I'm the proper stranger

I'm the proper stranger
Nobody knows my face or
Knows my name
Nobody knows where I'm goin' or
How I came

Lost and found, no one claimed me
All alone with a million others
So take my hand and show me where to go
‘Cause don't you know I'm the proper stranger

Broke my mind, had no spare
Nothing left and no tomorrow
so take my hand and show me where to go
‘Cause don't you know I'm the proper stranger

Guess Who, The Proper Stranger Comments

I wish I knew where the lyrics were written.  He refers to "windy city", and this album was recorded in Chicago.  But I've also heard Winnipeg, the Guess Who's hometown, called the windy city.

  2. Cathy Audette

HUGE impact on my teen years. Still relevant today. Still speaks to my soul.

Glad you got something out of it. The Guess Who was/is my favorite band. Now, here in the Madison WI area, and when goin' thru my geeky, gawky, teen years in the late 60's thru 70's in St. Louis Mo. A major reason was I always felt they were giving more of their souls to the fans, not just being entertainers, though of course, they were tremendous entertainers. As you can see by my previous posts, I check back here every now and then to here Proper Stranger and reflect on what the song meant to me, how I interpreted the song back then, and how I reflect on it now; what those thoughts about it then, tell me about myself now, and what that knowledge makes the song mean to me now. I hope it has done something like that for you, and that you keep checking back on it now and then yourself. Then, to top it off, I learned today,(12/21/2019) that the latest version of the Guess Who, with one original member still in it, the drummer, Gary Peterson, is coming to Wisconsin not far from me in early March!

Happy hours replaying this album over and over Sometime in the mid to late 70's, I don't remember this as a single on the radio, but perhaps the hidden gem on the record. The one time I saw them live in concert it was great, 1974ish in St.Louis, but I don't recall them playing this then, wish they had, or wish I could remember.

    Alexander Hagert

Saw them 2/70. They did this song, just like the record. The American. Woman album had just come out. Al. Aka. Dropping pin

That must have been amazing, I'm a little envious
