Guess Who, The - American Woman Lyrics

Uh!

American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama, let me be
Don't come a-hangin' around my door
I don't wanna see your face no more
I got more important things to do
Than spend my time growin' old with you
Now woman, I said stay away
American woman, listen what I say

American woman, get away from me
American woman, mama, let me be
Don't come a-knockin' around my door
Don't wanna see your shadow no more
Coloured lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, I said get away
American woman, listen what I say, hey

American woman, said get away
American woman, listen what I say
Don't come a-hangin' around my door
Don't wanna see your face no more
I don't need your war machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
Coloured lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, get away from me
American woman, mama, let me be

Go, gotta get away, gotta get away
Now go go go
I'm gonna leave you, woman
Gonna leave you, woman
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
You're no good for me
I'm no good for you
Gonna look you right in the eye
Tell you what I'm gonna do
You know I'm gonna leave
You know I'm gonna go
You know I'm gonna leave
You know I'm gonna go, woman
I'm gonna leave ya, woman
Goodbye, American woman...

  1. D.... B....

Yeah, baby, YEAH!!!! Oh, behave..... Name the movie this song was featured in.

  2. E.... T....

    Original version Is better

  3. P.... R....

    Blue eyes

  4. A.... C....

This version is longer than the one in Rock Band 2

  5. T.... F....

Any time the radio plays this song without the opening riffs, I am quite disappointed.

  6. J.... N....

This Canadian man knew the American woman was dangerous, just as the war machine was.

  7. N.... ....

Third best group out of Canada (behind Rush [obviously] and Motion Device).

  8. j.... m....

One of Canada's great groups beside Rush!

    j.... m....

    and the Poppy Family

  9. B.... L....

As You May Know. . . . They Played @ The White House around This Time. ... IF THEY PROMISED
    NOT TO DO THIS SONG!!!! BUT. . . . I Really Don't Have To Tell You. . . . Canadian and All. . . .
THEY SANG THIS!!!! So Very Proud Of Them!!!

  10. M.... B....

Cruising with my mom in the 70 Stingray on Alki Beach in Seattle at 5 years old in 1970!

  13. A.... Z....

    Ineguagliabile!

  14. c.... s....

The opening of this song is deceptively sweet, great guitar riffs. Hard to believe this song was helped made by a person's taping it in a crowd when it was performed live on a whim by the group.

  15. 6.... ....

WTF! This is NOT the song I was looking for, This STINKS! Never mind. It was the dumb beginning that threw me off. This IS IT,
The version I remember from 1970.

  16. S.... 9....

Am I the only one who plays first person shooters with music like this playing in the background because I like to think I'm in the Vietnam war? Oh well, having ancestors that were in every American war may have had an effect

  17. J.... W....

the GREATEST ANTI-AMERICAN SONG EVER WRITTEN.
"American woman, she gonna mess your mind...."

    J.... W....

As an American, I love anti-american songs

  18. j.... ....

To his credit Lenny didn't want to do the same version that was already out.Lenny put his own stamp on it.Randy Bachman like it. Most artist want to put their own spell on something if it's copy.

  19. S.... V....

    Great fuzz tone guitar!

  20. S.... V....

This song was against the politics of the US at that time.

Sorry Canada.... love ya tons .... but.... America is not the woman in this relationship

  32. L.... M....

    This song was made accidentally.

  33. A.... A....

    Communism has the bomb.
Fascism has fear on their side.
    Terrorism has rage
America has American Woman (Wonder Woman) as its choice of weapon and one that should be feared by all countries who oppose it because there's nothing more scary than a whole army of woman going into battle against all who have shamed her!

  34. T.... G....

    A 1960's A-m-e-r-i-c-a-n classic!

  35. M.... Y....

Dont worry people, the real song starts at 1::17. Just wait for it.

  36. D.... ....

The original is always the best... Remakes are but a shadow, in homagé of and to the original light.

  37. r.... s....

    Burton and Bachman enough said

  40. N.... D....

The lead guitar tone on this song sounds so good.

    N.... D....

And the band didn't have all the goods we have now for recording

    N.... D....

That's Randy Bachman at his best. A great song!

  50. m.... ....

1:28 sounds alot like the bgm that plays in the bathtub orgy scene from "fritz the cat"!

  51. 1.... ....

i dont know why it took me so long to realize that the cover of the album is actually a woman, the band, and other blue areas are part of the womans face, and you can see 2 eyes, a mouth, nose, and hair.

    1.... ....

    same here lol

    1.... ....

Yeah I never saw any part of the woman in the album cover 😂

  52. O.... R....

  55. T.... W....

The 70's era brought me here! My era and the best music on the planet!

    T.... W....

Cool that the 70s did bring you

    T.... W....

I was a teen in the 60’s. So it was Motown, Gene Pitney and Bobby Vee who made the most important memories for me. The 70’s were not that significant. A rather shity period in my life. By then I grew up and realized that life is one big disappointment after another.

  56. E.... A....

Robert Johnson’s legacy continued in that intro ..

  57. G.... R....

    Ju has pin

  58. E.... K....

Back in the day this was the REAL everyman rock.

  59. D.... P....

    Masterpiece!!

  60. A.... F....

    Play it at 1.25 speed

  61. D.... M....

This song always makes me think of Austin Powers.

  62. H.... M....

The singer ruined that band for me.

  63. u.... D....

American Woman, Seven Nation Army and Smoke on the Water, best riffs ever!
    1:17

  75. D.... G....

How I feel every day of my life. Any woman but an American woman. Fuck all y’all 🖕

  83. J.... V....

Anyone else think Led Zeppelin borrowed a bit from these guys when they made Whole Lotta Love?

    J.... V....

Yep. Good observation on your part.

    J.... V....

If you play both the riffs on guitar they're very similarly played.

    J.... V....

Whole Lotta Love came out before this lol

    J.... V....

Whole Lotta Love: Recorded, May 1969
    American Woman: Recorded, August 1969

So, nope. The similarity is just coincidental.

  84. c.... U....

This is the original this is the best version

  85. M.... T....

1:17 and 3:33 - this is what ALL other rock songs want to be.

  86. J.... H....

Butthole Surfers version > The Guess Who verison > Lenny Kravitz version

    J.... H....

butthole surfrs are a whole different categorie, bra

  89. P.... M....

Lenny does know what this song is about
Neither do any of you so cold hearted kids

  92. U.... W....

1970 I was 14 years old when I heard this song on AM radio. The cut version. It wasn't until about 3 years later I heard this original version on FM radio. 1973 was the year we had our first FM Rock Station.

  93. C.... J....

*This song reminds me Whole Lottla Love from Led Zeppelin*

    C.... J....

    Yup!!! 🤚🏾🙂

    C.... J....

I once saw the Guess Who perform this - I think in about ‘74 - and the lead guitarist (maybe Dominic Troiano) turned the riff into Whole Lotta Love and Burton actually sang a verse of the Zeppelin song before going back to American Woman. The crowd went absolutely nuts.

  94. C.... T....

They're such a great band. Burton Cummings is just an awesome singer.

  95. J.... H....

My theme song after my first divorce.
