Griffin, Patty - Tony Lyrics

Does anyone remember Tony
A quiet boy, little over weight
He had breasts like a girl
When I wasn't too busy feeling lonely
I'd stare over his shoulder
At a map of the world
He always finished all his homework
Raised his hand in homerooom
He called the morning attendance
With the pledge alligence to the gloom

Hey Tony, what's so good about dying
He said I think I might do a little dying today
He looked in the mirror and saw
A little faggot starin back at him
Pulled out a gun and blew himself away

I hated every day of high school
It's funny, I guess you did too
Its funny how I never knew
There I was sitting right behind you
They wrote it in the local rag
Death comes to the local fag
I guess you finally stopped believing
That any hope would ever find you
Well I know that story,
I was sitting right behind you

Hey Tony, what's so good about dying
He said I think I might do a little dying today
He looked in the mirror and saw
A little faggot starin back at him
Pulled out a gun and blew himself away

Hey Tony whats so good about dying, dying
Hey Tony whats so good about dying, dying
Hey Tony, what's so good about dying
He said I think I might do a little dying today
He looked in the mirror and saw
A little faggot starin back at him
Pulled out a gun and blew himself away
Pulled out a gun and blew himself away
Pulled out a gun and blew himself away
Tony...

This profoundly sad song addressed bullying before it was so rampant and/or talked about openly. So sad. I think that many of us knew a Tony at one time or another.

    G.... S....

Tony was my brother. He attempted suicide 3 times before the age of 13--fortunately, he never succeeded. The first time I heard this song, I pulled my car over and sobbed.

@dierdriu You have my most belated respect. I know what it's like to be the sensitive kid and was bullied by kids and nuns. I had a good friend in high school and from my perspective, Melissa had it all - grades, looks, style, money - but all she wanted was some no-cost attention/affection from her parents. While her parents were on one of their trips, Melissa sealed off the garage and got into the car. No one saw it coming. I'm guessing that while the impact may have abated, you still carry a degree of pain. Tony is not a song title. Tony is your brother.

    G.... S....

Virginia Scully, That is so tragic. Yea. My parents were even more cruel to my brother than our peers were. I'm sorry about your friend. She deserved all the love. And I'm sorry you had to deal with poor treatment. No child should experience these things.

    G.... S....

@dierdriu Found myself thinking of you and Tony today. I'm almost 52, so we never had the capacity of ways to torment fellow students. It's my fear that a young relative (5th grade introvert) being picked on by classmates. I've spoken to the parents, so they can give her the tools to withstand it and to internalize confidence). Please don't think that I view you related only to bullying. I am a believer in serendipity and the fact that you entered my mind may signal that I should include you in my evening meditation. I am a health care Consultant who is deeply rooted in conventional medicine, but I have incorporated breathing, stretching and meditation into my daily routine to release the stress of the day. I send healing light out to people I know and to those that may need a little "unconventional" boost. I hope that this finds you well.

Wow. WOW. How many Patty Griffin songs are going to wreck me? They keep stacking up, and I am so grateful for this brilliant, brave artist. THANK YOU for singing about shit that actually matters, in a way I can feel the truth resonating through your being. You heal us.

    S.... D....

Right? Her songs are the emotional soundtrack to my life; confirmation of the pain and rawness some of us carry at all times, and the beauty that somehow, however unlikely, exists simultaneously.

Also, um, YOU'RE STUART DAVIS OMG. :D

  16. D.... J....

My opinion...one of the best songs ever written. Power. Truth. Thank you.

  17. a.... ....

    this song is terrible

    a.... ....

@Puggle64 Well I agree the song is supposed to be shocking, bluntly put as it represents his own inner thoughts and self hatred plus the hate the local "rag" some locals, a stark difference to the tune which is an upbeat track... I think that's what makes it so powerfull. Tastes differ though.

    a.... ....

@maszlagma It's true that tastes differ, but puggle64 misunderstands Patty's use of the word 'faggot'. That's not a difference of taste. It's the difference between accurate perception and distorted perception. Of course, it's obvious that her use of the word 'faggot' is meant to show Tony's self-hatred. It is not Patty making an anti gay slur. How can anyone not understand that?

    a.... ....

+Puggle64 You get it or you don't. You don't. No crime.

    a.... ....

    +jweyek Well said

    a.... ....

At the time that it came out, it WAS shocking... because we were used to hearing the word "faggot" bandied about quite carelessly, not in the context of someone reflecting on themselves in self-hatred. It was shocking in the best possible way, because it took something that was so often uttered carelessly and showed it for the horrible slur that it is.

  18. A.... a....

I found out about the song in the book Boy meets Boy by David Levithan
