I have no idea what the element is that does it, but no matter how many times I hear it, there is no other song that completely and utterly destroys me emotionally like this one. It just completely guts me. The verse:

Make America Great Again My husband has watched "Griffin & Phoenix" with me more than once. He's not a chic-flick guy but he does know & appreciate good music. We can also identify with the characters because of the similarity to us.

Patty G. remains toward the top of my all time favorite performers list ever since I first heard her, which must have been more than fifteen years ago. Use to play her CDs over and over and over. This little ditty has to be one of her best, though she has a plethora of great songs...

I am a fan of Ellie but feel that Patty's version is still much stronger. Ellie has a softer musky voice and does not articulate words as well and its difficult to understand her. Patty sings clear and piercing. She has more of a folk sound with tad bit of country twang that does not appeal to todays youth. I think Patty Griffins style is awesome.She is a talented singer and songwriter who has inspired many artist to cover her songs. There is no comparison.

I like Ellie, but I just listened to her version after only ever hearing this one and good God, it's no contest that this is the superior version. It's so perfectly phrased with such uncomporable voice control and a beautiful arch to the dynamics and instrumentation. It's just a perfect song sung perfectly by the woman who wrote it. Dixie Chicks did a decent job with Top of the World, but I don't think anyone is ever going to outplay Patty Griffin at one of her own songs.
