This song is so important. I am not gay or a boy but I am biologically a girl who dated and loves a girl. I didn’t tell her. My mother didn’t say any of this out loud but I knew she didn’t like gays. Little things hinted over the years. I didn’t want to wear make up and she asked if I wanted to impress all the guys. I gave her a deadpan no. She angrily stated well do you like girls. I said no again and she dropped the conversation and just took my phone til I put on makeup. She cringed at girls or boys holding hands. She walked us right back out of a store with a pride flag in the window saying that there were cuss words and inappropriate books. I don’t think that was the truth because she has never walked out of any other book store like that. After a while without incident I figured maybe I had anxiously imagined her hatred. I got a new phone and my background was two girl bestfriends from a book series that I like. One girl blushed because the other teased her about her boyfriend. My mom took one look and said change that it looks gay in the most disgusted voice ever. Shortly after, she found out. She shut off my phone and cut me off from the outside world until she deemed me straight. She let me stay because she said it’s mercy and love but she still told me repent because liking girls wasn’t good for my health... I heavily leaned on and remembered this song to get through.
