Grateful Dead - That's It For The Other One IV: We Leave The Castle Lyrics

And when the day had ended, with rainbow colors blended,
Their minds remained unbended,
He had to die, oh, you know he had to die.

    "THE OTHER ONE"
Spanish lady come to me, she lays on me this rose
It rainbow spirals round and round, it trembles and explodes
It left a smoking crater of my mind I like to blow away
But the heat came round and busted me for smiling on a cloudy day
    Coming, coming, coming around
Coming around, coming around, in a circle
    Coming, coming, coming around
Coming around, coming around, in a circle
Escaping through the lily fields, I came across an empty space
It trembled and exploded, left a bus stop in its place
The bus came by and I got on, that's when it all began
There was Cowboy Neal at the wheel of the bus to never ever land
    Coming, coming, coming around
Coming around, coming around, in a circle
    Coming, coming, coming around
Coming around, coming around, in a circle

If one track has ever stuck ingrained in my brain cells like my own Mantra from the TM days this was the one on my first acid trip to the never ever land...

  8. M.... V....

    Those are some good musics
I just met the band because of a book I was reading that just recommended me to listen to this while reading a specific part of the story
The name is: Man Will ever know any of this...
Search for it and give it a chance if you're up to a new experience :)

    So. Fucking. GOOD!

  16. B.... O....

In 69 I was part of a commune in North Heath,MA,last place before VT, in the Berkshire Hills,I used to love to put this song on during breakfast to jump start the day...

  17. b.... ....

Summer of 68', Times Square, NYC, picked up this LP, got home in NJ, and put it on the Stereo, plugged in my first "good" set of headphones, and 8 minutes later I "GOT" the Grateful Dead : "The bus came by, and I got on, That's where it all began !"

  18. W.... H....

This is the best Dead tune ever, EVER! I'm old, so you'd better pay heed or I'll come over and crash on your couch and eat all your twinkies. I'm serious, beware.

    W.... H....

Come crash on my couch, cause I'm old too, and "New Potato Caboose: is the best Dead tune EVER!!

  19. j.... z....

The other day they waited, the sky was dark and faded,
solemnly they stated, "He has to die, you know he has to die."
All the children learnin', from books that they were burnin',
every leaf was turnin'; to watch him die, you know he had to die.

The summer sun looked down on him, his mother could but frown on him,
And all the others sound on him, but it doesn't seem to matter.

And when the day had ended, with rainbow colors blended,
his mind remained unbended, he had to die, you know he had to die.

A spanish lady comes to me, she lays on me this rose.
It's rainbows spiral round and round and tremble then explode.
It left a smokin' crater of my mind I'd like to have blown away.
The heat came round and busted me for smilin' on a cloudy day.

Comin', comin', comin' around, comin' around,
    comin' around, in a circle
Comin', comin', comin' around, comin' around, in a circle,
Comin', comin', comin' around, comin' in a circle.

Escaping through the lilly fields I came across an empty space,
it trembled then exploded, left a busstop in it's place.
The bus came by and I got on, that's when it all began,
There was cowboy Neal at the wheel and the bus to never-never land.

Comin', comin', comin' around, comin' around,
    comin' around, in a circle
Comin', comin', comin' around, comin' around, in a circle,
Comin', comin', comin' around, comin' in a circle.

And when the day had ended, with rainbow colors blended,
    their minds remained unbended,
He had to die, Oh, you know he had to die.

Bought the vinyl in the PX in 69 in Moron, Spain. Been a long strange trip. Long live the Grateful Dead.

    M.... T....

Mark Turner There's a town in Spain called Moron?  I'll be damned.

  23. W.... H....

This is the greatest song to ever come from this band. I'm not a fan of the Dead, seen them live three times and was always disappointed. This song though, this song is marvelous.

    W.... H....

William Henshaw Not a huge fan, but this is definitely a good one. I went to two shows in 88. I had a blast, it was a party. I like a handful of their tunes: Bertha, Alabama Get Away, Shakedown Street, Terrapin...

    W.... H....

William Henshaw It's probably because you weren't stoned at any of their concerts.

What does the "he had to die" lyrics mean? Is it solely about Neal dying or does it refer to a "death of self" of some sort when taking acid? I am a bit confused and taken aback by this part of the lyric. Somebody help me out please. Thanks.

    J.... D....

Have a look at this ('Annotated 'The Other One''): http://artsites.ucsc.edu/GDead/agdl/other1.html.
This is a great site: you can look up commentary etc for any GD song by typing 'annotated (song name)' into your browser search.

    J.... D....

Yes, at specific weight/mcg dosage. of lysergic. one does experience a 'death of ego, cf. The Psychedelic Experience, Leary, et al.' I know, man, I have been there!

    J.... D....

@Ron Sullivan - Yeah, I/we remember. We're still here, awaiting your return. Sh'ant be long now. It will be much easier to accept this time.

Just stay away from all hallucinogens and you'll never have to find out the awful truth. If you don't, then the one who supplied you with them, who secretly hates you and wants to destroy you, will succeed.

  29. J.... S....

Now this is the Grateful Dead I love. I wish they didn't ditch the psychedelic/acid rock stuff.

    J.... S....

@Jack Straw They Ditch It Because Of Altamont

    J.... S....

It had nothing to do with Altamont, they were already phasing out their psych stuff for months in favor of country. The last straw in my opinion was Tom Constanten leaving, because after that they wouldn't have the big whirling organ sound until Brent joined the band (but even then it was different)

    J.... S....

@Jack Straw I Know But They Kinda Didn't Miss With The Psychedelic/Acid Rock Stuff Also The Band Started As A Country R&B Band But They Ditch Also Know All Of This Stuff But The Final Straws Where When Altamont Happen And When Tom Left Also Dude They Still Use Keyboards On Working Men's Dead Also They Still Played There Psychedelic Jams Have You Never Heard Their Live Albums But They Didn't Want To Do It On Studio Albums So What You Talking About Never Ditch Their Psychedelic/Acid Rock Stuff I Don't Care If You Respond To Me Anymore

    J.... S....

Workingman's dead is just as psychedelic as this
    Mars hotel even more so

    J.... S....

They didn't ditch this song, that's for sure. But they ditched songs like "Born Cross-Eyed" bc they were too hard to play. They wrote some excellent but complicated songs, like Let Me Sing Your Blues Away, Unbroken Chain, Till the Morning Comes, etc., but as they aged, they couldn't get that same energy onstage as is on the records.

  30. R.... ....

Grew up with this song <3 my parents loved the grateful dead. Still have some of the marching bear stuffed animals in my room lol

  36. g.... n....

I love how billy laws this intricate jazzy base to hold it all together, with or without mickey adding even another texture to it woth crazy ass timing and syncapation. With bob coming in holding the heart of the song and music togethet on top of the rythym devils, somtletimes adding his own little lick, like a dope ass signature on a piece of art. Meanwhile phil slumps the funkiest counter to the leads melody, like a deep ass undertone to give the whole thing depth, the perfect counter balance to the rocking lead. And the keys man, wheher pig, keith or brent, play like a secondary lead, adding the perfect dissonance and accompaniment to garcia, each beingso unique, dead heads argue over the best era with the keya player being the only personell difference. And finally garcia painting a masterpiece on top of all of it. I dont need to tell you. Doing theor best to maych vocals on top of it all, never pretending like that was what they were really abouy, making it even better to us. Singing the lyrics of fucking poets. Grateful dead, best shit around.

  42. D.... ....

I can listen to this thousands of times in a row, and I'll never get sick of it...

  43. S.... C....

Still one of the greatest albums every, 50 years later. A marvel of production, particularly for that time. I read something a while ago that one of them (probably Phil) said about how AotS could've been better if they'd gotten all the tracks to sound the same, or something like that. Thank God they didn't! The album is fine just the way it is. Can you imagine a cleaned-up version of Alligator? I don't even want to. It would've been ruined.

This album and Live/Dead are about as close as they ever came to perfection. And this track, That's It for the Other One, was many people's portal to enter the weird, wonderful and wild world of the Grateful Dead.

I always thought that giant sniff (followed by whatever that strange sound is) was hilarious. And do I hear a giant spitting sound there, too? You gotta get better shit, brother!

  44. B.... S....

This song is like The Beatles A Day in the Life

    B.... S....

the beatles were george martin powerfully influenced from sgt peppers on.

    B.... S....

ARCH SUNS Uhh, Martin was merely the man who knew the recording machines after Rubber Soul. The ideas, concepts and performances were of the four lads. They asked for a sound to match an idea and Martin found it. No more.

    B.... S....

    cactaceous

    Well the thing about Martin.
He knew he had to die.

    B.... S....

I don't see the connection but both are Fantastic!

    B.... S....

@bikri08 As "Day in the Life" was two songs by the two more prolific writers in the Beatles put together (John, Paul, John), this too is two songs - one by Jerry (The other day they waited), and one by Bob (Spanish lady come to me), and back to Jerry (And when the day had ended). I believe there is far less "noise" in the Dead composition than there is in the Beatles. Lastly, as to "tightness and control", please listen again, especially to the three bassists (left ear, right ear, and spine), as well as the 4 drummers bouncing across the top of your head.

  46. R.... S....

This song was written by Bob Weir over a period of time.
The verses of the song "came to me in a flash" and the finalized version was first played live Feb.3rd,1968 in Portland, Ore.
Neal Cassady died in the early hours of Feb. 4th, 1968, outside San Miguel Allende, Mexico after getting drunk at a wedding, and walking down the railroad tracks, allegedly counting the cross ties. Supposedly his last words were "68,710."

    R.... S....

Probably the best Weir ever did.... such a great segue at 2:00!

    R.... S....

The comin around song was, the first part is actually called “cryptical envelopment” was written by Jerry

  47. R.... ....

Is this the song where the title of the documentary comes from?

    R.... ....

@Riddickisawesome101 Yes. I believe the part that Weir sings is "technically" called The Other One. I don't even think its listed that way in the credits of the parts of the album, but thats how they make it sound in the documentary.

  48. d.... a....

    yes!

    thanks...

  49. J.... A....

This song, my favorite of Jerry's, is featured in one of my Holly Goforth novels. The Anthem of the Sun is played at deafening volume during a crazy Keys toga dope party, imitating the one in The Alexandria Quartet. A horrible murder is committed as the Dead guitars roll and the bells toll.

    J.... A....

    Its written by Bob Weir.....

    J.... A....

Seriously no one gives a fuck about your age, I know you feel special for listen to this music instead now days pop crap, congratulations thats great, but belive me, you're not the only one.

  60. L.... F....

im just some 16 year old kid and recently got a turntable, one of the vinyls in my old mans cabinet was skullfuck or skull and roses. the live version "the other one" brought me to this. my brain is melting. seriously these old deep cuts are the best.

    L.... F....

"Vinyls" is NOT a word.Vinyl records is what you want to use.

so nice to hear it again so may years down he road..a

  62. g.... ....

I'm going to be 63 in a couple months, this song still gives me chills and that tingling feeling up my neck to the top of my head, just like it did first time I heard it in 1967 or so, (first song I noticed by The Grateful Dead), good music, whatever else they were they were good musicians, too bad about some of the choices they made.

    g.... ....

galenbih2o there just choices. we all make bad ones at times. i regret none of my bad choices. thy made me the man i am today.

  65. s.... v....

    Pure psychedelia. Beautiful <3

  66. t.... ....

Youtube mp3 audio sounds like shit. But even in this weak upload form, I still disagree. The live parts of this album on the original vinyl make the record. Live parts make The Grateful Dead.

  67. c.... ....

Best Dead album ever - thank you - it's too bad the full album was "dismissed". The combination of psychedelic sound with American Indian influence is awesome. I loaned out my album &, of course, never saw it again but isn't sharing what the Dead was all about?

  68. a.... ....

it does not get any better than this

  69. J.... E....

I was a kid when my big brother turned me on to the Dead (along with Spirit, King Crimson, the Airplane and other stuff). I will always be grateful to him. Thanks for posting!

  70. G.... ....

the studio recording parts sound WAY better than the live-collage stuff. SO so wish they recorded The Other One in the studio like Cryptical. The sound is so awesome.
