Grateful Dead - Standing On The Moon Lyrics
Standing on the moon
I got no cobweb on my shoe
Standing on the moon
I'm feeling so alone and blue
I see the Gulf of Mexico
The coast of California
Must be somewhere over here - over here
Standing on the moon
I see the battle rage below
Standing on the moon
I see the soldiers come and go
There's a metal flag beside me
Someone planted long ago
Old Glory standing stiffly
I see all of Southeast Asia
I can see El Salvador
I hear the cries of children
And the other songs of war
It's like a mighty melody
That rings down from the sky
Standing here upon the moon
I watch it all roll by - all roll by
Standing on the moon
With nothing else to do
A lovely view of heaven
But I'd rather be with you
Standing on the moon
I see a shadow on the sun
Standing on the moon
The stars go fading one by one
I hear a cry of victory
And another of defeat
a scrap of age-old lullaby
Down some forgotten street
Standing on the moon
Where talk is cheap and vision true
Standing on the moon
But I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco
On a back porch in July
Just looking up to heaven
At this crescent in the sky
Standing on the moon
With nothing left to do
A lovely view of heaven
But I'd rather be with you - be with you

Grateful Dead Standing On The Moon Comments
So many of us would rather be with him. If not just one more time.
Love Jerry forever.
I'm not crying you are, ok we all are I admit it who else will hahh
it takes real musical prowess to play this slow and do it well. when done right it cant be denied. I know I'll get hate for this but I actually noticed Kacey Musgraves band is capable of doing this too.
Really feeling this lyrics atm....
Do you ever go to a first concert of a band you had not yet listened to and one song is a stand out. This was that song for me at the Omni in Atlanta in 1994. The lyrics are pretty much unbeatable.
I am so happy to be alive and able to watch this again. It takes me to the moon and back! I am sure that Jerry would want us to carry on in his style and love every minute of it! I can't believe that it is so long ago already.
God I would love for just one time to be able to hear Jerry sing one of his songs like this, and not have a tear travel down my face. I just cant help it...he gets me every time.
July 7th is my birthday I was at this show standing on the rail in tears
I love this song! I've been abdeadb fan since 1970. But this song brings me to tears!
I love you JERRY my angel of LIGHT and. GROOVY SOUNDS THE BEST STANDING EVER AND❤⚡🎵 I WAS THERE THANK YOU GREATFUL LOVE
Thanks for this. I fought to love the dead for decades because I don't like most of their "too happy" music, but love this stuff. Thank you thank you thank you!
Holy Shit! Such a wonderful performance.
Thank you Jerry.
#riproberthunter
RIP Robert Hunter
that's why I stopped in..Mr Hunter wrote so so many of my favorite songs , this and Black Muddy River especially . Listening to it in memory
I never knew what an amazing guitarist Jerry was until I heard this. It wasn't this particular perormance but that solo at the end? Makes me cry.
Hgighya everyone. can I say to you I Love this song. But id reather be with GOD>>>>>>>>>> FOREVER and EVER>>>>>>>>
Everyone treated him delicately. Even Brent. They gave so much space for what he wanted to do or was capable of doing at that point.
Still miss you, Jerry!
Jerry !!!
🌈😎🌈
Happy Birthday Jer. Always love you, always grateful for the joy you brought to so many.
Jerry faked his moon landing
Yup... can't top this one🤙
50 years ago today, Neil Armstrong was standing on the moon.
Allegedly
Just recently found out about Grateful Dead. Went to Dead and Co 2 weekends ago and I'm re-learning what music is. This is unreal
The Fat Man Rocks ! R.I.P.
love the song and jerry's phrasing.
So funny. D & C is OK I guess but listening to them makes me appreciate the Jer versions that much more. He could really take you there
Not the same, not even close, but its a pleasure to see d&c reach their peaks too and keep the music alive.. and mayer has been nothing but impressive
@Steve Lavazza I enjoy D and C for what it is. I'm glad to see a younger generation get a taste of the experience.
Anyone else watching this after the D&C 06/29/19 SotM from last night Weir sang and the band nailed, and that verse when Bobby started wellin’ up? Me infinity!
It was so great. That’s why I’m here listening back to this one!
You’re making me well up!
Bobby brought a tear but mayer sent voltage thru my body with that solo to finish it
I love the idea of the song - to see all of SE Asia, wow!
I miss you Jerry...
I would STILL rather be with you
Is it possible to love someone you never knew? Love is real. NFA
never really got it , just so loved the love in the the all
How can anyone not love Jerry? He was simply the best. Miss you man.
Humble & incredibly eloquent. Not your typical "rock star" An American original
im crying
I miss ya captain ⚡️💀🌹
Supreme quality and sound! God Bless JG
One of those most beautiful songs ever, R.I.P. to the king, the god, and the legend
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SITE HERE UP HERE IN HEAVEN, BUT I WOULD RATHER BE WITH YOU,... NOT FADE AWAY!!! Long strange trip it's been, hello to all and to a greater tomorrow and 2019...
That old JFK was such a dump, but such good memories of the boys in Philly. Good ole days 😊
" I hear the cries of children and the other songs of war" are some very powerful lyrics and hearing Jerry sing them is a total fucking tear jerker. It makes us (by us I mean Americans, westernized, the fortunate) realize how well off we have it and how most of the problems we face pale in comparison to what others face on a daily basis. I realize I'm pointing out the obvious just wish I (we) could get this message through to the rest of the assholes that inhabit this place.
If there’s a better version of jerry vocally on this tune I’d love to know the show.
never dreamed that one day Millennial Democrats would call Captains words as racist. Crimson White and Indigo~~~Grateful Dead America"s most American Band!!!!!
WalStiB
Beautiful !!
Wow Phil!
Thank you jerry <3
Happy Birthday Jer
John Mayer can’t touch the fat man love this song man I miss that man
Fk me running backwards.....
I so miss JERRY and BRENT 😘
Standing on the moon, but I’d rather be with you....
Is there any record of Jerry speaking from his personal perspective about this song? I have long speculated that this song is especially personal to him perhaps even compared to other soulful or melancholic Dead tunes. It must have been so very strange to regard the world from his perspective and sometimes maybe the overwhelming singularity of it might have found him in a some detached and maybe even lonely or isolated place? Does this song resonate so with anybody else out there? I love this song so much I really wonder what Jerry felt about it.
nathan woodard it is special to him - his depression describes the landscape of being isolated on the moon and never being able to act on his aspirations of life of what he wants to be happy... he then rips into the solo at the end....
I hope you do know Jerry did not write his own lyrics. Not to diminish Jerrys place in the band but lyrics are Robert Hunter's. And he is still alive.
MammaApa
Hunter is the bard. I feel so fortunate to be alive while he’s putting out work.
MammaApa not alive anymore :/
The last show @ JFK - the stadium was condemned a week later.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Kennedy_Stadium_(Philadelphia) ...it was epic!
Jerry is my boy!!! One of my favorites!! For sure!!
Such a beautiful song sung by a beautiful man and played by a beautiful band. I see a lot of post saying they miss Jerry. Well, yeah, we all do. But if you want to hang out with him we are all so lucky to have this footage. Along with alot more. Jerry gave us his all. And he did what he loved which was play music and have FUN!!!!!
Crimson, white and indigo. Jerrytastic. Thanks bro!
Steve Tady i will never get over jerrytastic. That broke me
The Grateful Dead
No band will ever compare or come close to the greatness of The Dead.
Jerry messing up makes me smile. Cuz he did it so beautifully. This brings tears to my eyes every time!😊
One of the greatest Garcia/Hunter songs ever. The lyrics are so beautiful and amazing! And the way Jerry arranged it fuck me it is genius. I have shed a tear or two with this gem.

Just watched the boys do this song at MSG a few hours ago. They did a great job. But it just made me miss you more.....
I MISS THIS SOO MUCH.
Standing on the moon
With nothing else to do
A lovely view of heaven
But I'd rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco, on the back porch in July, looking at the heaven and that crescent in the sky
i rather be with you
I`m agree.... beautiful version. Don`t forget of "Downhill from Here", Alpine Valley, too. Forgive my english... I live in Rio.
There aren't any "bad" versions of this song. The awful thing is the sadder Jerry is the better it sounds, this is a good closer like Broke Down Palace.
Miss You Jerry
impossible not to cry if you're a real fan. BEAUTIFUL, JUST BEAUTIFUL
RIP Jerry. You will always be loved.
This was wonderful...ever hear Miami when they played this 94?
I was there and in tears during this epic song!!!

gorgeous
Beautiful! This is a good example of Jerry coming off as Father Christmas as Sting called him.
One of my very favorite of Jerry's vocals - heartbreaking & beautiful at the same time. Thanks for the memories ❤️
this song will always be one of my favorites ❤💙
almost makes me cry
This was my first show. Heard this song and took off on tour the next day, never looked back. Miss Jerry and Brent beyond words.
Best song ever. Rip Brent 😪
i miss him, the days that dont go so well, i know his music can take me to a place of bliss
You know that movie cliché that says any time a mafioso attends an opera he must get sentimental and tear up when the performer hits the high note. That's what this music does to real people.
Rest In Peace jeri
It's a shame that he died
Jerry, you left us far too soon :(
heart's a-summer
Such a beautiful crafted song both lyrically and melodically
I love that I love the dead!
I was here, 17 years old somehow drove myself and my friends down and back from CT. I was lucky to have seen a lot of these shows from their last heyday 89-90, this was one of the best I was lucky to see. The Scarlet/Fire is one of the top 5 for me.
