Grateful Dead - So Many Roads Lyrics

Thought I heard a blackird singing
Up on Bluebird Hill
Call me a whinin' boy if you will
Born where the sun don't shine
And I don't deny my name
Got no place to go, ain't that a shame?

Thought I heard that KC whistle
Moaning sweet and low
Thought I heard that KC when she blow
Down where the sun don't shine
Underneath the Kokomo
Whinin' boy got no place to go

So many roads I tell you
So many roads I know
So many roads, so many roads
Mountain high, river wide
So many roads to ride
So many roads, so many roads

Thought I heard a jug band playin'
"If you don't... who else will?"
From over on the far side of the hill
All I know the sun don't shine
And the rain refused to fall
And you don't seem to hear me when I call

Wind inside and the wind outside
Tangled in the window blind
Tell me why you treat me so unkind
Down where the sun don't shine
Lonely and I call your name
No place left to go, ain't that a shame?

So many roads I tell you
New York to San Francisco
So many roads I know
All I want is one to take me home
From the high road to the low
So many roads I know
So many roads so many roads

From the land of the midnight sun
Where the ice blue roses grow
Along those roads of gold and silver snow
Howlin' wide or moaning low
So many roads I know
So many roads to ease my soul

Whining boy and nowhere to go! So many roads, so many roads

    B.... P....

I believe Jerry wanted us to know our time will be up,but before you leave make sure you know what road, and hills to go

    B.... P....

@Brad Powers Jerry's last song from his soul!

    B.... P....

Hi there fellow Heads...I hope everyone is having a nice Holiday Season, and I wish each and every one of you, a New Year filled with joy and good health, and MANY more to come...I don't know if this is gonna sound crazy or something, but I truly believe the true heads will understand...I realize it's been almost 25yrs since my bus came to a crashing halt on that 9th day of August, 1995, and I know I have to put the past behind me and live my life, but I have really been missing The Silvered Haired Angel and Brent more than usual lately...those Jerry ballads just have me in tears lately, and I'll be fifty next year..lol..so proud and honored that I got the pleasure of seeing Jerry and the boys 37 times in a little under two years, but have to be honest, I wish it was 437!...once Jerry walked alone by the last muddy river, the shows, the tours, the family..was over...I haven't stopped yet, sobbing for our friend all...but I'm finally going to see my first Dead & Co show this Spring/Summer!...I'm getting those butterflies again, the same way I felt before my first Grateful Dead show(almost)...so I guess I'm finally facing the sad truth, that I really will never experience that again..like that...I remember EXACTLY where I was on 8/9/95 and what I was doing...does anyone else remember that horrible day?...love to share memories...good, and sad too...I have no one local who understands...thank you all and Happy Holidays to All!...✌💀💨🎸🕯🍄🎙🇺🇸🌹🎶

    V.... M....

I recall exactly where I was when I heard the news of Jerry. On a shuttle van while on vacation in the Outer Banks in North Carolina. The driver told us. Sad thing is that seeing the Dead in concert was the first thing ever on my "bucket list", which I conceived a few days before his death.

    V.... M....

@zalewskimm so glad you got to see God's musical Gift to the world in person...there was and still is, NOTHING LIKE IT!...stay Grateful...Happy Holidays...✌💀💨🎸🕯🍄🎙🌹🇺🇸🎶

  8. z.... ....

How moving. I'm in my 6th decade almost and have always wanted to explore the Dead's music. Can anyone guide me? Bless you all.

    z.... ....

welcome aboard the bus and enjoy the ride

    z.... ....

    Listen to 7/2/89 7/4/89 7/7/89 7/9/89

    Have fun!!

    z.... ....

I would start with these two box sets spanning all their recording years, That way you can find what era you like best.
    The Golden Road (1965–1973)
    Beyond Description (1973–1989)
These all most of the albums and then live tracks from the era of the album.
Just out now is "Ready of Not" with live versions of all their late era song, 1992-1995
Then pick a year your and find the top shows from that year, 1977 is my favorite and then I listen to them all, in order.

    z.... ....

@klaussmith thank you, and thank you to the other responders ... :)

  9. O.... ....

Oh Jerry! So many things to say. This is such an amazing video. A man with a tired but strong and wise heart with a soul that can connect with so many of us. His guitar rifts touch you in the depths of your soul and the thought that he may have known it was coming to an end makes it so much more special. Not many people like him LOVE YOU JERRY!

    O.... ....

I watch this video and think of all that was going on with Jerry at that moment. Couldn't be a more fitting song for him at that time in his life. RIP Jerry, you maybe gone but not forgotten!

  10. K.... W....

    Thanks.

  11. J.... T....

Yea i saw them in Pittsburgh with rusted root it rain like bell then stopped magic
Happened that night,Jerry does not like the heat.a cool wind blew that night.

This brings a tear to my eye every time. Jerry looks and sounds so frail. The fact he dies just weeks after this, his body just holding on. You just wanna go through the screen and save him somehow. Not sure there was much to do to help at that point anyways. I’m still amazed the level of performing he could do as someone addicted to such hard drugs. He forgot a lot of lyrics but actually is orettt amazing how he could remember and play like he did: there will never be anyone like him. He was a true original. So many amazing roads Jerry led so many of us on.

    s.... ....

streetvan1997 exactly I love this performance... I watch it weekly..

  14. F.... E....

So many roads... and Greta the Tunafish walks the lonely road alone ... barefoot and with a self-knitted bikini to the rainbow ...

  15. K.... D....

Thank you for making this available. I lose it every time I see this. I hope my children can see this 20 years from now. Mind blown.

  16. A.... F....

    I can't watch this without crying😭😭😭

  17. r.... ....

I told my 5 year old nieces Jerry Garcia was Santa Claus so they'd watch it all. Lawful evil 🤷‍♂️

    r.... ....

roryfitzpatri,, lol my kids are 4 and 5 and know who Jerry Garcia is.. Never to early to show them
    Great real music..

  18. S.... T....

Shit Jerry looked better at this concert than he did at the show I went to in Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Coliseum, Birmingham, AL
    4/4/95 (Tue)

    S.... T....

Yeah he was actually starting to get better, ended up getting into rehab not too long after this concert.. He was clean, almost ready to get outta rehab, but his heart decided it had enough.

    S.... T....

roryfitzpatric I think getting clean and changing his diet was too much trauma for his body to take

  19. F.... D....

I reckon I better download this just in case you do delete it, I can't lose this version. It has changed my entire life and it is perfect

    F.... D....

Fred Drawdy if you do can you email it to me?? not sure how to download it , I dont have the paid youtube.. Thanks man

    F.... D....

Would start by going to this website: https://ytmp3.cc/en/ it's a video to mp3 converter so you'll take the link to this song and paste where it says on the website and it should concert it to a file for you to download

    F.... D....

@Daveyboy I hope that helps you a little I'm not sure how I would share through email, might not be too bad if you can't get it just let me know

    F.... D....

Fred Drawdy thanks man I will give it a try..🍻

  20. F.... L....

Jerry I wasn't even alive the same time you were, however you have shaped my life in so many ways, my parents wouldn't have been together if not for your songs, I wouldn't be myself if not for them, they have shaped much of my personality, I cannot say how many times I say quotes from your songs and how much they shape my own personal philosophies. Thank you so, so much. Fare thee well.

  21. R.... F....

Buddhist practice, bluegrass flatpicker, two English degrees, masters thesis on Kerouac, too many more to list, I got it all from Jerry.

  22. K.... B....

Chicken skin performance... aloha Jerry sorry I missed this show. My first show was at soilder field in 1986

  30. E.... C....

Jerry’s last song he gave to us you can hear his soul at the end trying to teach us “So many roads I know, All I want is one to take me home, From the high road to the low.” Amazing spiritual song makes me cry every time.

    E.... C....

Yeah especially when he says ain't that a shame and give you a minute to think about so many roads. And so many roads tease my soul! Last words I got to hear him say,to this day he's right as rain!

  31. M.... N....

  34. M.... I....

Free of charge so next time you get annoyed having to wait 5 seconds to press skip ad remember that this is such a gift and if 5 seconds and an annoying ad can shake you off your game then get the premium service

  36. T.... ....

Wow a fuckin ad right in the middle of one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

    T.... ....

I know, even 1 at the end with 2 drum beats and its the end!

  37. J.... S....

I was there! :( Missing you Jerry! Our Love Not Fade Away!

    J.... S....

@Brad Powers I just wish it hadn't of been the last show

    J.... S....

God broke the mold when he made Jerry Garcia

    J.... S....

@Brad Powers it's hard to replicate the master of his guitar....

    J.... S....

Love them they just walk out on stage and rock the world

    J.... S....

@Brad Powers no words even needed just rocked it

  38. W.... B....

    A.... A....

I couldn't agree more. This and Days between kill me. Absolutely

  41. M.... C....

This makes me so sad 😞

    M.... C....

    Marvin Cruz
So hard so painful not only because he’s gone or this was last show but because Jerry more than any musician I’ve ever heard sings the truth with an authenticity that makes grown men cry!!! Myself included

  42. G.... B....

    RIP Jer Bear 🐻🐢❤️🌻💀⚡🌹🥀🍄🛸

  43. B.... W....

    Gets me every damn time....

  44. C.... N....

I caught a bunch of these last shows, the last few years, being a young Head of 42 now...thank God I did! Jerry and the Dead will ease my soul until the end of my road too...glad I was old enough to experience this, what an important part of my life they were and always will be...what an inspiration to so many generations.

    C.... N....

I am young too! I am so glad I got to catch some of the shows, and it definitely spun me out into a space. That was the last show I got to see and remember hearing the love in that song and I would do it all over and over and....

    C.... N....

Brad Powers rock on brother! Let’s take our roads...

    C.... N....

Jerry was trying to tell everyone that he has been every where done everything! And to find you a better way for your future and how much it is to love others and all that glitter is not gold! I could hear him expressing himself and teaching a lesson about his life and how to live your life!

  45. P.... M....

    😂🤣🤣😂😅😁😁😁😁 wow!!!!!

  46. m.... ....

    The golden road ends

  47. D.... ....

1 month to the day before he died. Rip jerry.

    D.... ....

still remaining to shine and be one of the greatest, up until. This entire show displays what Jerry was meant to do. Thank you, Jerry!!! Forever GRATEFUL and DEAD to the core. Love & Light.

  48. M.... W....

I used to think Black Muddy River was the quintessential Grateful Dead song. I think this one surpassed it. Missed lyrics and all, it just kind of sums it all up. So Many Roads to ease my soul.

  49. m.... ....

So many soulful roads that brings tears to my eye...

  50. g.... ....

This version, that night, 24 + yrs ago, is/was will always be, so sweet - Indeed!!! EVERY TIME i STREAM THIS VIDEO, I JUST WANNA GO "HOME" - AGAIN!!! AND IT'S A BITTERSWEET REMINDER, of our collective journeys end........... I could listen to it a thousand an one ties

    g.... ....

    Well said Garrick

    g.... ....

You very succinctly summed up a feeling a have a lot. The infinite gratitude for the experiences we shared with the Dead and each other. The deep longing to remain in that magic place. And 25 years later still aware of that empty spot Jerry left in us.

  51. a.... l....

Anyone complaining of the ads in the middle of the song, you can take any YouTube video and skip to the end and hit the replay button and it takes away all the ads

  52. P.... W....

Now Robert Hunter is gone too. I'm going to go play Reuben and Cherise on repeat until I feel better.

  53. J.... P....

Brilliant! This realy touches an old Dead Head's Soul. 💝

  54. J.... P....

Adding a commercial really takes away from the message the zDead tryed to give us.

    J.... P....

You can skip any youtube video to the end and replay it and it takes away all the ads. You're welcome

    J.... P....

I use AdBlock Plus and rarely see ads...

  55. j.... ....

so many roads to ease my soul.

  56. j.... ....

the part that always got me was Phil and Vince with the silky backup vocals. rip jerry and rip Vince.

  57. m.... ....

I am Grateful that I have lived at the same time as so many bright souls! Rest peacefully my friend.

  58. J.... J....

Who are the morons who gave this a thumbs down? May not be their very best performance but Jerry is singing with so much soul and emotion. The whole band is in on it. Beautiful.

  59. P.... B....

I can’t watch this video and can’t get emotional.

    P.... B....

I went to couple hundred shows through 80s and 90s. I wasn't at this, and couldn't listen to this show till sometime in 2015, it was real hard.

    P.... B....

Paul Bidne tears and chills every time man.

  60. m.... 1....

I cant hardly watch this even tho it fills my soul with joy. Lost my dad a few mos ago to a accidental overdose, he lived his life much like Jerry. Him and my father favored one another so much in the later years, even mannerisms. They both had such a calming cool presence, ppl loved my father, as we all loved Jerry. So hard to watch right now but I know is good for the soul, praying for healing. Both gone too soon. RIP Jerry RIP Papa

    m.... 1....

maik 1127 let the music heal you my friend. If the dead can do anything, it’s fill you with hope.

  61. E.... W....

I love how emotional he was in this song. He certainly had a rough life, but once you start certain drugs they take over. Really sad when he died though I heard he was really trying to quit, back then. He is missed, he was part of a whole generation movement. Great full Dead still Rock!!!!!

  62. S.... B....

So what exactly aged Jerry so much? Coke? Heroin? Why would it have that effect?

    S.... B....

    Food, drugs.

    S.... B....

Nights out with the band (and other bands) combined with bad eating habits, drugs (an awful lot of drugs). It worked when he was 25 but after 35 y o he had to change his way of life because there are things you can do when you are young but not after. It’s a miracle that he lived that long and still he was only 53 when he died

    S.... B....

Lorenzo Galasso Sad huh?? He was such a good musician Rest In Peace Mr. Grateful Dead...

    S.... B....

Heroin, mostly. Diabetes. And well, abysmal eating and lifestyle habits (for the most part) for very long time. You can see his hands shaking here.

    S.... B....

    Lack of exercise - overweight

  63. M.... H....

Oh don’t we miss Papa Bear...so many roads since then , miss you like it was yesterday !!

    M.... H....

Thank you for the like !

  64. D.... R....

    One of the best.

  65. m.... ....

A road from mexico to chicago that day, unknown to the thousands of us outside among the campers in the soldier field parking lot, smoking weed with Chuck and Sky, would be Jerrys last show, last song for his road.

  66. s.... b....

Robert Hunter RIP 9-23-19 so few roads left to us all

  67. T.... ....

I love the way Jerry played in his final years. The blazing fast runs became very precise and focused less on the meaning less and more on the important notes.

    T.... ....

Amen! The harmonics in this cut are beautiful

  68. J.... K....

    RIP legend 💔

  70. D.... ....

Here for Robert tonight too. Seeing the other comments today, I'm glad we can all find somewhere to share our grief at his passing and our joy at the music that he left for us. RIP Hunter.

Its a new band now !

    D.... H....

    Derek Hoyt
I understand I do but I encourage you to get back out there!!!! Jerry was is and will always be once in a lifetime and we who were part of it are truly the luckiest fans on earth! Maybe Bob Marley too... my lord he was simply the best so authentic so talented so painfully human yet divine as so few are! I can say with relentless fervor that Dead and Company is something to marvel and experience! When they first came on the scene in 2015 was not a fan! Maybe them maybe me maybe both but they’ve improved like no other and have taken me to that beautiful special place that is THE GRATEFUL DEAD and truth be told Jerry right there every step of the way! To quote John Mayer
“Jerry Garcia is the most alive dead guy that’s ever been”! How true it is his legacy will never die. NEVER!!!!

    D.... H....

Plan on goin to go see Dead @ company looks like a good show

    D.... H....

Derek Hoyt never ever I knew when we left Solider Field

    D.... H....

I keep listening and playing along, they are still teaching me.

  80. B.... H....

Was at this show and this was a treat to hear him sing. He put his soul into this tune. Love ya Jerry!!

  81. B.... H....

Gerry looks all worn out with about a month to live , I too traveled his same path.

    J.... P....

    NOT FADE AWAY!!!!!!!

  85. P.... S....

Thanks for this. So beautiful and haunting.

  86. M.... H....

Wish I was able to see them with my brother in Michigan (7/6?), concert right before this one. He got to see them, and now I'm sure they're hanging out in the sweet by and by.

After all these years I still learned a little I never new from the dead documentary Amazon did recently.

  87. C.... S....

I love this song. I miss him so much. I just hate seeing him so f'ed up. so sad

    C.... S....

Chris Seidel It’s almost hard for me to watch seeing him this way. Knowing how that last tour was and that this was one of his last performances. You can see how tired. It’s hard not to cry.

    C.... S....

It really is hard not to cry

  88. G.... ....

Imagine if Jerry was still alive now, how old he would look. He would probably look so old by now he would look like freaking Yoda.

  89. T.... H....

In love with this song it’s helped me so much

    T.... H....

I know what you mean. Gets me through the sad times and also reminds me of them in a good way.

    T.... H....

One of the last true ballads that explains it all. Days between and lazy river road make
    Me feel similar feelings.

  90. T.... M....

sorry that i never got to see you papa bear

  91. C.... P....

Some of the crowd at @8:28 look genuiunly concerned. Must have been bittersweet to feel the emphasis on this particular song :'(

    C.... P....

Amazingly I'm in that shot. Was so surprised to also see a dear friend who is no longer with us. All of us had our hearts in our mouth. I was in tears. I can't understate the collective emotion enough. We all knew Jerry was near the end.

  92. s.... ....

I can't count the times I tear up watching and listening to this ...so good .. so sad .. so missed ...

  93. M.... B....

Garcia's swan song so sad, so many people felt that loss as much as I did it was a major event in my life seen him 25 times in Kansas City ,St Louis and Deer Creek Kokomo Indiana . Was in St Louis in 95 probably the last 100,000 to see Uncle Jerry. He left us too soon that's so sad.🤙🤙🤙

    M.... B....

I am totally with you Mark, besides immediate family I can think of no other person whos passing has left such a void. It's a joy just to remember the good times.

    M.... B....

@strangher11 to both of you. Grateful Dead and Jerry were a huge part in my twins and younger brother life. The day Jerry passed about a month after this concert in our hometown Chicago I couldn't believe it. This is a great song. He wasn't his best but he wasn't feeling his best. We so miss him. We see Dead and Co. a lot and some concerts are able to take you back but nothing like it was in the 70's/80's. Grateful Dead just takes me someplace else and I'm grateful for that.

  94. T.... T....

I'm so glad Dead and Co won't play this song, they know it's all Jerry's

    T.... T....

Who cares. Let it play and be loved. Any negativity is the opposite of what the dead....in any form, preaches. If you will. Long live em all.

    T.... T....

Lets not be mean we all have our thoughts

    T.... T....

Fuck that. They should play it. Along with unbroken chain and a few others. Break em out this fall, Bob!

    T.... T....

Why leave it alone? If they can play it, then why not? I get that they should play what they want, and keep the repertoire they're comfortable with, but why can't they break out a few gems? Seems undead like.

Might be one of the most beautiful songs ever written and played. It takes me into uncharted territory within the physical world. I like to close my eyes and just feel the power it radiates.
