Grateful Dead - Dire Wolf Lyrics
In the timbers of Fennario
the wolves are running round
The winter was so hard and cold
froze ten feet neath the ground
I beg of you don't murder me
Please
don't murder me
I sat down to my supper
T'was a bottle of red whiskey
I said my prayers and went to bed
That's the last they saw of me
Don't murder me
Please
don't murder me
When I awoke, the Dire Wolf
Six hundred pounds of sin
Was grinnin at my window
All I said was "come on in"
Don't murder me
I beg of you don't murder me
Please
don't murder me
The wolf came in, I got my cards
We sat down for a game
I cut my deck to the Queen of Spades
but the cards were all the same
Don't murder me
I beg of you don't murder me
Please
don't murder me
In the backwash of Fennario
The black and bloody mire
The Dire Wolf collects his due
while the boys sing round the fire
Don't murder me
I beg of you don't murder me
Please
don't murder me

Garcia on steel...he was such a multi talented instrumentalist. Savoring this tune after hearing it on Yoakum's Bakersfield channel.

Grateful Dead Folk Tales
One of the best songs I've ever heard. And remember ( please don't murder me )
I hear the Bryds and Poco here…great groove
Damn he can play that steel with the best of 'em, great song!
Binge watching Game of Thrones, Season 6. John Snow (family sigil = The Dire Wolf) just retook his family home of Winterfell...and this song sat up in my mind and begged to be played...because "right on time".
George RR Martin is a big Grateful Dead fan
I bought a shotgun yesterday, and when I turned on the radio in the car to drive home this was on.
Coincidence?...
Probably.
Jerry is a self taught steel player. RIP Mr. Garcia.
Seems to me remastered versions are faster. Gotta A B it
One of my favorite songs by them!
Who else could write a song with the words "please don't murder me" and make it sound jaunty and upbeat?
Just here paying my respect to the greatest lyricist in Rock n Roll history. He was the man behind the most influential band of all time and perhaps the biggest piece. Rest in paradise Mr. Robert Hunter your work will live forever,Jerry n Pigpen are waiting
RIP Robert Hunter. One of the great rock era lyricists of all time. And this album on my Top 100 Albums of all time.
A fronte praecipitium a tergo lupi
Was the Queen of Spades line meant to be a Pushkin reference? Was one of the Dead a fan of Russian literature?
The nurse didn't succeed :)
August is Jerry Month, luv ya buddy.
great remaster
I cut my deck to the queen of spades but they are all the same
LOVE that pedal steel guitar!!
Happy Birthday, Jerry! We miss you so much.
Please don't murder me, just rape me...
They found a dire wolfs head last week. Look it up
Love it
The song was inspired by the 'Zodiac Killing' in the Bay area.
A card game gone wrong.
Dire wolf, six pounds of sin.
600 pounds of sin to be exact.
That's my youngest son
The song was inspired by the the Zodiac Killer an unidentified serial killer who operated in Northern California from at least the late 1960s to the early 1970s. The killer'sidentity remains unknown.
Gortnotr season6
Great Tune
I 💘 this song
Game of Thrones...

idk...love The Jerster but Norm Hammonds...i.e.
Merle Haggard
Awesome
Six hundred pounds of sin.. Ain't it always that way?!
Yeah, i knew her in college
@Ancient One Yep. I think we heard about here here too..
this album, and led zep iii...for some reason, my two favorite albums for...for forever. love playing the same workingman's dead album in "certain" environments"... watching the brother's heads look up, turn around...i be smiling and shit...
Love Jerry's steel on this one!
The lap steel makes this song. Just like the banjo does for Cumberland Blues. It's why I like the studio versions of those two songs best.
Best slide guitar not steel was Jerry on Crosby Stills Nash "Teach Your Children" yeah that was him doing those sweet licks
@Greg McLean It's crazy for me as a younger fan of these classics finding out about all the songs Jerry contributed to outside of the dead! Peace and love man, thanks for sharing this!
@roryfitzpatric Jerry Garcia loved music period and played rock, folk, country and blues it didn't matter with him when alive just give him a guitar and some playing mates and let him go for thats what he did playing music his passion in life when he walked this earth of ours
@roryfitzpatric One of my favs from the Dead a couple great tunes combined as they always did in concerts going into 15 or 20 minutes of jamming from song to blending into another song...hope u enjoy young man ..https://youtu.be/QTPndsG_KA4
600 lbs of sin
Sounds like an old manager I had when I used to housekeeping at a hotel 😂
metaphorically the ultimate weight on one's shoulders....contemplating state of demise when
faced with it.
@Amy Roberts Back to work!
- Your old manager
My wife
👍👍👍👍👍
perfection
needn't say more.........indeed
The most underrated of the dead songs from this album
Gene Hennigh My all-time favorite Dead album and Dire Wolf + Easy Wind = my favorites of the album. Lucky I got to see the group 2X when Pigpen was still alive.
I always loved this song (~;}
So true
The reckoning version is a gem as well
Just hearing it now on Gideon Coe's show on BBC 6 Music.
Out of the two albums released in 1970, I prefer this one a lot more than American Beauty
How can you pick one album ??!! I'm 27 and a dead fan for 15 years and I can't even pick one . Love you Jerry RIP .... Wish I could see them live (dead and company) . I love shakedown St. !!!
The cover band and the song
100% agreed.
Loved American Beauty for years but only knew Casey Jones from this album. Tried actually listening to the rest of it a couple of years ago and realised what I'd been missing. Still just prefer American Beauty, but this is a hell of an album.
Still my two favorite Dead albums. Probably always will be.
