Grateful Dead - And We Bid You Goodnight Lyrics
Lay down my dear brother, lay down and take your rest,
Won't you lay your head upon your savior's chest,
I love you all, but Jesus loves you the best
And we bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
But His rod and His staff, they comfort me (goodnight, goodnight)
Tell "A" for the ark, that wonderful boat (goodnight, goodnight)
Tell "B" for the beast at the ending of the wood (goodnight, goodnight)
You know it ate all the children when they wouldn't be good,
Walking in Jerusalem just like John (goodnight, goodnight)
I go walking in the valley of the shadow of death,
And we bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.

My Dad sang this to me as a child... Even as an adult he will occasionally. I now sing it to my daughter. Everytime I hear it I could smile and cry simultaneously. 🙌🏼🙏🏼❤️
There are much much better Christian songs out there. This song sux, their voices are bad
Elisabeth then listen to something else?
Do you know who this is? This the Grateful Dead. They were a major counter-cultural group from the 1960's. They became very successful, and are now in their late 60's and early 70's. Because of their extensive use of psychedelic drugs, they chose to end their shows with this lovely spiritual with African roots. I'm sure there are better Christian songs out there, but this is a live recording from the end of a concert back in the 70's. Cut them a little slack, like a good Christian. Thank you.
Elisabeth as a "Christian" why even make that comment... Just don't listen to it and move on to the songs you do like. As for me, this song is beautiful and Jerry's voice is too. 🙌🏼🙏🏼
shame on you
I sang this song to my dying uncle on his death bed while he was sleeping and tears ran down his face. He loved the Grateful Dead. That night he died
Sometimes Jerry's voice almost brings me to tears. I love the way he comes in at "walking in Jerusalem just like John"

My buddy played this for me after coming down from a mushroom trip, and it was one of the greatest moments in time

Ronald Mast I want to hit like but you can’t possibly “like” that. I’m atheist but I truly hope there is a heaven because if so they’re with Jerry now.
my mom sang this to me when I was little...
Played as the parting song at my dad's memorial service yesterday. No dry eyes.
Arcadia Shanklin sorry for your loss!

I love this song it helps me go sleep
Though taken from older poetry, the earliest recording (to date) was 1959 by Joseph Spence of the Bahamas, and the Pindar family. Here's a YouTube link to Joseph Spence singing it. Goodnight brother Spence, R.I.P. (1984)

this was my moms favorite song band in memory of mama
this was my moms favorite song band in memory of mama
my first dead show they ended with this, I've been in love ever since!!#
I may have been at that concert at the Fillmore East (after a half century I don't even try to recall which was which anymore).
"Box of Rain" was sung at my friend's son's funeral (brutal spinal cancer took him). Another friend -- a guitar virtuoso -- learned the song so that he could play it at my friend's request. After a quarter century he's never been the same. People are just not built for this -- for the loss of a child. (Even though he was in his (second?) year at MSU, he was still his child...)
Love it
is this an original of theirs?
No it was written by the Bahamian Gospel singer Joseph Spence. Please google his name. He was Wonderful! The Great Ry Cooder recorded a lot of his tunes.
Respectfully, this particular arrangement might be attributable to Mr Spence, but it's a traditional tune, and traditional lyrics, traceable at least to the 19th century (and probably way earlier).Just three of the many sources for this:https://history-of-songs.wikispaces.com/The+Grateful+Deadhttps://mainlynorfolk.info/watersons/songs/sleeponbeloved.htmlhttps://books.google.com/books?id=QjKrCgAAQBAJ&pg=PA60&lpg=PA60&dq=is+%22and+we+bid+you+goodnight%22+traditional&source=bl&ots=sqLJrbShWo&sig=AA8C6LIoKopzwBY48AaEGwm3uO0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjYucjj8KnNAhVJGx4KHSfQB2o4ChDoAQgdMAA#v=onepage&q=is%20%22and%20we%20bid%20you%20goodnight%22%20traditional&f=false
@smartalek180 The original arrangement of this tune is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-I2m-ZCZvI. The 1871 book of original hymns by Sarah Doudney is where you can find the origin of the lyrics.
If you're really curious, here is a copy of the Third Edition of the book in which Doudney's poem/hymn appears. https://books.google.com/books?id=WLwOAAAAIAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false page 76.
Beautiful version
