Grass Roots, The - The Days Of Pearly Spencer Lyrics
A tenderment, a dirty street
Walked and worn by shoeless feet
Inside it's long and so complete
Watch by shivering sun
Old eyes in a small child's face
Through walls and cracks and leave no trace
And daylight's brightness shuns
The days of Pearly Spencer
The race is almost run
Nose pressed hard on frosted glass
Gazing as the swollen mass
On concrete fields where grows no grass
Stumbles blindly on
But withering they stand and stare
Through eyes that neither know nor care
Where the grass is gone
The days of Pearly Spencer
The race is almost run
Pearly where's your milk white skin?
What that stubble on your kin?
You played and lost not won
You played a house that can't be beat
Now look your head's bowed in defeat
You walked too far along the street
Where only rats can run
The days of Pearly Spencer
The race is almost run
A tenement, a dirty street
Remember worn and shoeless feet
Remember how you stood to beat
So Pearly don't you shed more tears
Those tenements are memories
Of where you've risen from
The days of Pearly Spencer
The race is almost run

This is one instance where I feel The Grassroots version here is as great as the original by the fabulous David Mcwilliams!! I am, and have always been, a huge fan of both! I purchased the Lovin' Things album days after its release - the same holds true for Let's Live For Today and Feelings! My three favorite albums by them- Thanx again Irh1966 for this great post!!

I bought the Lovin' Things album in the late 1960s and wore it out. Haven't listened to in in years since I don't have a turntable. I'm living in England but I still have the album in California. I forgot how much I loved this song until I heard it again today, thank you so much for posting this so I can listen to it again and remember my life more than 40 years ago!!!! Thank you for listening to this Grass Roots recording here...Friends, Lloyd.
I absolutely love Pearly Spencer and think this album is one of the Grass Roots best. I also recall that this song had at least a tiny bit of airplay on local radio stations because I recognized it back then and was thrilled it was one of the songs on the album.
Oh, yeah! "Let It Go" - Dennis did lead on that one, didn't he?
I don't have any Grassroots albums just some 45 hits. This is a cool song. you have a great sounding system there.
