Great to hear there's a new album coming! I only discovered your music last year but I have to say I'm a huge fan especially of your lyrics. Can you bottle some of that and send it over?

i'm going to say that the song is all about, perhaps mostly in the later years, you realize that love is an illusion so you go out, buy a dog and train the shit out of them, because they will listen to you and follow you without conviction, then enter them in shows so you can prove to everyone that you have trained them, made them perform well and that the dog loves you, making you appear to be smart and loved. because that's what's important to you. to validate your life where you couldn't because nobody would love you because your controlling and manipulative. but a dog will. like the crazy cat lady. except that cats are too smart.

There's a steep learning curve getting into and appreciating John's work in general, I feel like this song requires the same journey. its taken me many listens with open ears but I now really love this song... the end of the chorus "there is nothing left to lose"... really captures the brilliance of this song
