I feel that this song is at first a person entering a cult and them asking him questions and then he slowly delves in deeper and soon it escalates to “don’t worry just do as we say and we won’t hurt you” so a cliche reassurance turns into a threat and then it gets worse and they say stuff like “do we need to remind you of the love we gave you” then “why are you walking away” then to “we’ll always be watching you” so this cult appears to a horrible experience and he just wanted it to end and since he left it just filled him with paranoia thinking “is someone watching me?” So to relate to real life he might have wanted this son to relate to what has happened to him in real life he may have gone through childhood with a controlling parent or today he may have found himself a manipulative partner that led to this song and the manipulative part of it kind of relates to this song because as you can see it looks like this character is in a manipulative kind of cult environment

Okay, I have some things to point out that are likely the highlights of this song. Note, I don't think this necessarily have to do with christianity or church, I think it is focused more on the government and the illuminati. Here are the highlights: 0:41, There are people with some sort of bible books and there are dozens of them. Look closely and you can see a diamond shape with an eye in it. I dunno what that means but that could be "Government" Related. 0:45, People are preforming some sort of movement that could potentially be some sort of celebration or something evil in the sense of illuminati or governments as leaked information from people who have worked with the Government have seen celebrations and traditions like this.

Here is a VERY important one. PAY ATTENTION!

0:58: there are three people who seem to be killing someone who passes out. Now what I think here is that the person with the book probably told the two people holding the woman to kill here because the woman is looking for answers for "Why are you doing this?" or, "give us the answers!" And the dude with the book seems to have a very tall tower on his clothing as well as the two other guys who were holding the woman. And I think these three people including the one with the book is the illuminati and they killed her off. There is an article about this too. Find it if you want. This scene is also shown in 1:38.
Here is something that nobody probably even noticed. 1:00, There is the woman there who passed out or probably killed by the Illuminati but then a couple seconds later there are crosses and a goat or a cow blocking the footage of the woman dying. And no it is not a different scene cause near the top left corner, you see one of the dudes who where holding the woman. Now, Gotye did this to cover up that scene where she died all the way and this means that Gotye covered that up because he didn't want the government to see that and probably could have killed Gotye. In 1:02, you can see how the goat covers up the scene.

1:20, what is that guy just sitting there kinda sad while there is people dancing in the background. And when I say People, I mean the Illuminati.

1:42, Pause it right on 1:42. The image shows the woman being killed and you can see the illuminati dancing left and right and down below on the bottom left corner, you can see the people with the Bible books which is either the Bible or the anti bible. and on the bottom right corner, you can see the hand movement dance thing which is likely government related.

1:43, You can see the screen gets very bright with the goat on the side and just the whole group but then as we actually saw the woman really die, the scene cuts out back to black and gray. Which is to probably cover that scene up to make sure the government doesn't see it. Also on 1:42 and 1:43, why is there some sort of scream in the background? Many of you probably didn't notice that there is a scream in the music before Gotye says: "Do you need a reminder?"

2:07, why the freaking heck does this guy get incredibly MAD?! This part actually kinda scares me and I really don't know why he gets mad.

2:22, this is the part where you can see. the diamond and the eye on the bible or anti bible. This group of Illuminati and government might also include the anti christ.

2:34, this guy is dancing in front of this camera and his nose is jiggling around left and right and this could mean that either the nose is a lie or something else that I have no idea.

2:41, The goat or cow here you can see has its mouth open constantly and it seems that it is falling down. Now this animal could be sacrificed or killed in the middle cause I heard animals are killed by the Illuminati too.

3:16, and finally we can see the goat fade away probably because its being killed. :(
