Gosdin, Vern - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face Lyrics

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love
To the dark and the empty skies

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hands
Like a trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command

The first time ever I lay with you
I felt your heartbeat close to mine
And I thought our joy would be the world
And would last 'til the end of time, my love
And would last 'til the end of time

Oh the first time ever I saw your face
Your face, your face, your face

Man, what a voice! I cry for all the losses we have had of our country voices! George, Keith, Merle, Vern, Conway, Marty, Lefty, Glen, Mel ( Tillis and Street), Buck and so many more! I miss those days!

Vern Gosdin does this song honour with his beautiful rendition. I'm a Canadian and have thought of Gordon Lightfoot's as the definitive version of it. Lightfoot, a Canadian singer/songwriter, wrote it. Now I know there's room in the world for exactly two renditions of it. This is as good as it gets! Thanks, Eddie, for putting this on.

Paul Fleming, G. Lightfoot was a talented writer but this was not his song. It was written by Ewan MacColl for his then girlfriend Peggy Seeger; they're Brits, the year was 1957 in the song's published credits.

I have heard this song sung by many and none have done it better than The Voice.  I would loved to have heard Keith Whitley sing this song.
