Gordon Lightfoot - Second Cup Of Coffee Lyrics

I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still can't face the day
I'm thinking of the lady who got lost along the way
And if I don't stop this trembling hand from reaching for the phone
I'll be reachin' for the bottle, Lord, before this day is done
I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still can't face the day
The room was filled with laughs as we danced the night away
But my sleep was filled with dreaming of the wrongs that I had done
And the gentle sweet reminder of a daughter and a son

Sitting alone, my friends have all gone home
You never know when they'll come droppin' in
Thinking of girls with their fingers in my curls
Too young to understand how love begins

I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still can't face the dawn
The radio is playin' a soft country song
And if I don't stop this trembling hand from reaching for the phone
I'll be reachin' for the bottle, Lord, before this day is done

I play a bunch of Gords songs, but this one was one of my favorite to cover. Plus, I played and learned the 4 finger picking style from a guy and we'd play Don Quioxte, him in 2nd fret capo, me in 7th...that was cool. Better days

  21. J.... S....

    Love you Gord.

I’ve been there lost a woman and drinking to numb the pain. Having to face and regretting your mistakes

Randy Scott ...Never lose your life for a woman!

Thanks for the advice no worries never again !

I wasted around 10 years of my life grieving over a woman I reduced myself down to just being a worthless drunk . Little did I know that at the time I was out of her thought process the day after she left. Alcohol does help but it also helps you perpetuate the lie of her returning . I’m ashamed of myself for letting a woman do that to me . I’m sure many people would say I did it to myself and that is partially true . No woman is worth that fact of the matter is once they say bye bye a man should tell them don’t let the door hit you in the ass ! But I survived it many men have committed slow suicide over love . Do yourself a favor never let the L word come out of your mouth and you are good. Once you utter that word the spell is cast you are now under the control of pussy !

  25. R.... D....

This song and my age brings to me the realization that life is and was always a collection of memories, a composition of emotional states that lead nowhere but were certainly enjoyable during the journey.

IMO, this is the most perfect, beautiful country song ever written. Second place is Danny Kortchmer's "You must not be drinkin' enough".

Just like me Richard. I am Australian yet have worked with many Canadians, we are so much alike. Love Gordon and his Music and Songs.

    R.... D....

Longer than I've been alive. He does have great songs and I prefer his cover of Me and Bobby McGhee instead of Janet Jackson's original.

Gordon Lightfoot knows how to tell a story. Ever had this experience? I have, drunk and regretting past foolishness and thoughtlessness. Oh yeah, I have been there. Exceptional composer and talented musician, Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian Treasure in my mind.
