Gordon Lightfoot - Endless Wire Lyrics
I ain't got nothin' to hide
My mind is an endless wire
I got both feet on the ground
I ain't got no one for hire
I ain't got a thing to show
So don't go foolin' around
An' set my wheels afire
Down in the dark of a burnt out soul
There's a few good second hand dreams
Deep in the dark of a heavenly night with you
Down in the black of a bottomless hole
There's a few good second hand scenes
Deep in the dark of a heavenly blue
Where the sea runs green
I ain't got nothin' to give
My life is an endless climb
My love's a paperback dream
I don't have nothin' but time
I ain't got a thing to show
I don't know my own name
So don't go foolin' around
An' set my wheels aflame
Down in the dark of a beat out soul
There's a few good second hand dreams
Deep in the dark of a heavenly night with you
Down in the black of a bottomless hole
There's a few good second hand scenes
Deep in the dark of a heavenly blue
Where the sea runs green
I ain't got nothin' to hide
My mind is an endless wire
I got both feet on the ground
I don't have no one for hire
I ain't got a thing to show
My life is an endless rhyme
My love's a paperback dream
I ain't got nothin' but time

Gordon Lightfoot Endless Wire Comments
Gordon deserves XM radio station
I always believed the great singer-songwriters had unique voices, phrasing and subject matter in their lyrics. I mean Gordon doesn't sound like Dylan, Cat Stevens, Neil Young, John Prine, Leonard Cohen etc...he too, has a very special style -- not country, not folk or rock. It must be a genre of his own -- because I can't think of anyone who sings or sounds like Gordon Lightfoot. Everything is just so excellent.
He is Bob Dylan's favorite singer/songwriter
I find this GL's most haunting song, with that string machine in the background.
Of all the comments posted about Gord the one I remember most clearly and can see in my mind's eye is the testimony of some 70+ fan and schoolmate of Gord's who said that the principal of their school frequently called Gord in to sing over the PA. Must have needed some relief from the little beasties. Can you imagine growing up with that?!?
Happy Birthday Gordon Lightfoot!
11/17/2018
MrGeno502 I was at the concert in Orillia we all sung happy Birthday!
I bought this album in 1978 . Great year ..
Folkish Rockish.... Awesome!!!!!
The entire "Endless Wire" album seemed out of character for Lightfoot. While some of its cuts, such as "Circle is Small", got airplay, it never seemed to mesh well with Lightfoot's earlier work.
He recorded this song while he was three sheets to the wind...I think it's a very personal album about the sorrow of his life's loves...I relate to this, then again, so do many of his fans...
the most "rocking" Lightfoot song, gives me the chills
Oh,, I had totally forgot this song! Way ahead of its time!
A look into Gordon Lightfoot's psyche.
This song kinda shows Gords dark side....and I like it !
Canadian Singer/Songwriter G.L. is probably the most underrated and awfully ignored artist of all times! Starting as well in 1962, recording early tunes, he is surely as big as certain Robert Zimmermann - or (to me) even greater...!
(Pat. Switzerland)
Bob Z. couldn't hold a tune if his life depended on it. And his melodies are BORING.
@FarOutRadio Then bugger off!!!
Please keep it gentle, if possible at all...
I first heard this song in Winterthur.
FarOutRadio Get lost
Banned in the US for the pure truth of Black Day in July - also happens to be a musical masterpiece. What am I saying - we have produced many greats - but a true master -
Canadian eh
When this came out, I was living in L.A. and this song got a lot of airplay. When exactly was it banned?
+CaliTrisha The song I was referring to was Black Day in July, a powerful piece about the Detroit riots. Many sites confirm it was banned in 30 states, 1968. The album cover shown is from the '70's, of which nothing was banned.
has no one noticed these songs are timeless
Yes; since the 60s
gordon dont say good bye to nova scotia they love you
canada got the best---gordon lightfoot.
usa got the pile--obama-
you folks up north are special---i love you all
I too, purchased this as an LP when it first came out, loved it & still have it! Endless Wire is a great song, but in my opinion, doesn't compare to "The Circle Is Small". What can I say? I LOVE that song! Along with "Beautiful"-my two favorites by him.
OK, I tried posting the lyrics. Not sure they posted in the proper order, tho. Well, anyway, you'll be able to see what the words are, in some order or another.
Down in the dark of a burnt out soul
There's a few good second hand dreams
Deep in the dark of a heavenly night with you
Down in the black of a bottomless hole
There's a few good second hand scenes
Deep in the dark of the heavenly blue
Where the sea runs green
I ain't got nothin' to hide
My mind is an endless wire
I got both feet on the ground
I don't have no one for hire
I ain't got a thing to show
My life is an endless dream
My love's a paperback dream
I ain't got nothin' but time
I ain't got nothin' to give
My life is an endless climb
My love's a paperback dream
I don't have nothin' but time
I ain't got a thing to show
I don't know my own name
So don't go foolin' around
And set my wheels aflame
I ain't got nothin' to hide
My mind is an endless wire
I got both feet on the ground
I ain't got no one for hire
I ain't got a thing to show
My lines have all expired
So don't go foolin' around
And set my wheels afire
Down in the dark of a burnt out soul
There's a few good second hand dreams
Deep in the dark of a heavenly night with you
Down in the black of a bottomless hole
There's a few good second hand scenes
Deep in the dark of the heavenly blue
Where the sea runs green
I bought the Endless Wire album (and I mean album) when it first came out. I loved every song on it including this one but I never could understand about 10% of the lyrics. Anyone care to post them for this song? Hate to go to my grave thinking he is saying deep in the "dirg" of a bottomless hole and other anomalies.
Mr. Lightfoot is my Canadian Hero. He tells the stories of life in Canada and of life in general!
jw.....a little confusing. I was referring to Terry not Gord. I know he is still alive. I talk to him quite a bit and yes he is touring right now. He's in the northwest and California on his "50 Years on the Carefree Highway" tour. It's going great to sold out venues. He is one amazing man!
I'm happy to say that Gordon is very much alive and currently on tour throughout the USA and Canada! He still has the WOW factor and always will! He's my favorite singer/songwriter of all time!
all being said..his lead guitarist deserves credit for some wicked licks here
I know that very well, and after he dealt with his issues he had the best still to give. I never thought those times really hurt his music but gave it an 'edge' that is rarely experienced in music, if ever. There's nothing he ever put out that can be considered bad or unimportant to his career. I love every bit of his music and is a true craftsman in every sense of the word.
Gord had a time when he was more than 3 sheets! But before that he was awesome.....trust me!
Hmmm...I was told he died on 11 Sept 11......sad anyway. He had the WOW factor for sure!
He hit the road and the road hit back, like so many entertainers...
I've been lucky enough to see him twice and have the utmost admiration for his words and music, cuz I can easily feel everything he's singing about...
Thank you for all of the years of memories -
Lol :) This song is amazing!
"There's a few good second hand scenes"
Great song from Gord!
Brillant, he does this on at least 2 other songs, where the tempo changes, stops and starts. Another is Daylight Katy, and Canadian Railroad Trilogy!! Over 400 songs later....what a gift to us!!
My bad, meant 0:57
At 0:59. i thought he said second hand smoke.. lol i love Gordon Lightfoot
Hi jeff1968ization - Sadly, Terry Clements had a stroke and died in Feb., 2011 at age 63. He is missed.
after he wrote that song about what a wreck my favorite singer, Ella Fitzgerald, was..I didn't like him no more
Takes me back, waaay back...when I knew so little about life, but I knew what I liked, and what I liked was Gordon's music!!
i agree every song sounds great he will leave a legacy of great canadian music thank you gordon for all the great music go canada go
he drank, but yet he wrote that song about what a wreck Ella Fitzgerald was...go figure
@hammeron39 I'll go 1:50 to 2:20 - for a "folk tune" that break cooks!!!
THE Legend among Legends..this song epitomizes my entire existence in more ways than I care to admit, yet without the memories it conjures up from deep within my surrealistic mind I just cannot live without...
Getting good music on vinyl in India in the 70s was hard. Endless wire was available by chance and was lucky to get it. Been a fan of Gordon ever since.
I remember first hearing this song and thinking this is one the best songs I have ever heard and why has it never been played on American radio, when they played the same old Aerosmith and Queen over and over untill you hate it.
I heard about what happened to terry clements and its a shame because he was a key part to the gordon lightfoot sound, he provided so many great leads such as the one on this song here.
What made this more potent for his fans was the personal realization that Gord was three sheets to the wind when he recorded this. He always hated it because of that but I told him that is what his true fans loved about him..that he allowed us to get on an emotionally intimate level with him and whatever psychological state he was in. What a powerful piece of music from the greatest lyricist who has ever lived.
....Even da derp bah da herp da derp derp herp a derp derp....
love it i remember falling in love with it on a road trip as a child :D
Good Day!
I really like Gord Lightfoot! Also really like this song in particular for some reason
Have nearly all his records.
I believe he was singing from personal feelings of bad life experiences..
Very very talented man indeed
Thanks for posting
