Gordon Lightfoot - Circle Of Steel Lyrics

Rows of lights in a circle of steel
Where you place your bets on a great big wheel
High windows flickerin' down through the snow
A time you know
Sights and sounds of the people goin' 'round
Everybody's in step with the season

A child is born to a welfare case
Where the rats run around like they own the place
The room is chilly, the building is old
That's how it goes
The doctor's found on his welfare round
And he comes and he leaves on the double

Deck The Halls was the song they played
In the flat next door where they shout all day
She tips her gin bottle back till it's gone
The child is strong
A week, a day, they will take it away
For they know about all her bad habits

Christmas dawns and the snow lets up
And the sun hits the handle of her heirloom cup
She hides her face in her hands for a while
Says look here child
Your father's pride was his means to provide
And he's servin' three years for that reason

Rows of lights in a circle of steel
Where you place your bets on a great big wheel
High windows flickerin' down through the snow
A time you know
Sights and sounds of the people goin' 'round
Everybody's in step with the season

" Your father's pride was his means to provide and he's serving three years for that reason."

Gord, you're intuitively brilliant, deeply and optimistically humane, and the way you put things crushes me. You sound great too.

Thanks so much for all you've given.

A spring evening, owls, crickets, a glass of wine, a full 🌕. Gords Gold, and memory of the old college sweet heart.

  10. H.... B....

This song is the best song that speaks to me on a social level. I can relate. It hurts but it is heart felt.

    H.... R....

Or human weakness. But which came first? Nobody knows and it's all by case-by-case.

    H.... R....

No it doesn't. You're missing all of it. And don't start that shit here.

  23. B.... ....

Being put up for adoption as soon as I was born in 1958, this song makes me wonder every time I hear it.

    B.... ....

I know this is no comparison but,I always wonder, what if I did this or that...Hope that helps :)

  24. R.... C....

One of the best examples of Gordon Lightfoot's "social commentary".

    R.... C....

And an excellent illustration of his insight and sensibility. Superb.

  25. E.... D....

  26. M.... ....

  27. T.... L....

my favorite gl song as well. love all his music seen him in concert. was a hell of a show enjoyed it

    T.... L....

I saw him about five years ago. He's quite modest. At one point he said that he didn't understand why people pay to see him perform, but as long as we kept coming, he'd keep performing. I thought that was pretty cool.

    T.... L....

I believe, as told by his storytelling, that he did many shameful and regretful things, in his younger days. He lived a full life, no doubt, but it will beat you down, with humility, as a result.

    T.... L....

@MrChrispy777 I believe he was always quite humble.

  28. P.... L....

My absolute favorite GL song. It is haunting and beautiful. It grabs me, as art is meant to when it is good.
