Good, Matthew - Avalanche Lyrics

One foot in front of the other
One foot back to counter it
Days like these you've got to find it in some other way
It's all or nothing baby

Avalanche, start inside of me
Avalanche, down through the trees
Avalanche, start inside of me
Avalanche, hell down through the trees

If everyone's a casualty
Then take your time there ain't no trouble
If the weather's fine and we're fealing crazy
There's always drinks and dancing in the rubble
I'm spinning and you're spinning
The world's spinning and we're laughing
And I'm charming, the devil's charming
And we're ruined but we're still building
And I'm selling and you're counting
The world's stopping but we keep going
And we're ruthless and we're cunning
And I'm heir to it all

Days like these you've gotta find it in some other way
It's all or nothing baby

Avalanche, start inside of me
Avalanche, down through the trees
Avalanche, start inside of me
Avalanche, hell down through the trees

This key is to your kingdom
This key is to your heart
Neither one is a doorway
But both of them a part
So one foot in front of the other

This is his greatest song IMO. This song cuts into your soul and moves you in so many directions. It puts you into a trance, you feel every hair in your body stand up.

This song saved my life. I was about to end it all, and heard this for the first time through my headphones, and thought, my goodness, with awesome music like this, so much more to live for! I am ever grateful for it.

  8. C.... H....

Ahead of his time; like no other. Interpret the lyrics, he's a prophet

    C.... H....

    Or a Freemason...

  9. L.... P....

revisiting after 10 long years..... see hi play TURF fest in TO two weeks ago and I almost forgot how much I adore this band. Truly is the voice of my teens and the most underrated musician in Canadian history.

  10. E.... D....

I like watching the people who listen to this the first time. You can see late into the intro, they get impatient. As if out of time with what we feel instinctively should be the change, instead he does one more repeat of "one foot in front of the other" they get restless. They want to indulge you out of politeness. Then eventually comes the change, and you can see their releif. It's like they drop into relaxation, and even the lyrics create a sympathetic connection between them and the music. Then once he is musically building a craggy mountain at "its all or nothing baby", he is inducing restlessness again, then drops them with the chorus. They become disconnected by the chorus, because it creates a too-much-too-soon, but he reconnects them again in the next change. In later choruses they get the chance to criticize it once he disconnects them again. Im not saying anymore. This entire song is a true and rare work of art.

First listen... OMG AMAZING! The more I discover their music, the more obsessed I am! LOL I just totally scored tix to his Montreal show tomorrow night! I just have to be there! I am beyond words... this song is my new absolute fav... ♥

    E.... D....

OMG too much information.....some people just enjoy music and are not so intellectually absorbed......

    E.... D....

Yeah about 30 seconds in i'm like "this is shit"
    I skip ahead to 1:30
    Nevermind lol

    E.... D....

The more intellectual sauce the less music

    E.... D....

The introduction sets the tone. I LOVED it. It's what made me WANT to hear the rest of it.

    P.... C....

  17. K.... L....

4:25 is the best part of the whole song. up until the end. His vocals are hypnotic.

  18. D.... T....

He opened with Avalanche when I saw him at a small venue in Chicago about 10 years ago. Good did a solo acoustic performance in front of approximately 200 people. I drove 200 miles to see him and it was worth the time and effort..

  19. D.... ....

Sorry, I realise my comment is 3 years late. But, when it comes to good musical suggestions, one can never be too late.

Beautiful Midnight is my favourite album and that's a bold statement being that Underdogs is a gem of a creation from beginning to end as well. Can you ever go wrong with Matt Good?

  20. C.... T....

I am unconditional fan of this group !!!

  21. A.... S....

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, and I'm not exactly sure you knew what I meant.

  22. m.... ....

Rediscovered today; a beautiful/melancholy song for certain...if you like this, look into Jeff Buckley (or the Tragically Hip) as well - the great poets aren't dead :)

  23. m.... ....

...and what of those who take time to notice, and better, comment?

  24. A.... S....

What the fuck is with people who reply to two year old comments?

    A.... S....

what would you consider an acceptable cut-off? :)

    A.... S....

    A k a k o o m Lmao this comment, replying 4 years later!

  25. O.... ....

And Vancouver!! For me Avalanche is the best, but all his albums are great ^^!!

  26. D.... G....

Near Fantastica is my fav Matt Good song.

    D.... G....

Maybe say this in that comment section?

  27. D.... ....

    avalanche- start inside of me...

  28. M.... C....

Avalanche and Hospital Music albums are landmarks on my playlist. Just very f*cking good stuff and the Avalanche tune particularly was the catalysor of all my interest towards Matthew Good. Especially the part starting at 3:36.

  29. R.... V....

Matthew Good is the soundtrack of my life...

  30. S.... W....

@raptorculiacan I'm American as well and own five albums; I just can't get enough...and I've noticed the older I get the more I'm listening to him. Yes, it is a shame how underrated he is (whether he likes it or not) and the crap that sells the most here in the states.

  31. T.... ....

    @mikewtp ....at the beginning

  32. 1.... ....

@raptorculiacan Yeah not many at all listen. I mean he tours a few places near the border, but no where major. Which is a shame. But whatever, Yanks miss out on tons of great Canadian music; Matt Good, Tragically Hip, Barenaked Ladies, and so on.

  33. k.... ....

Matthew Goods best ever song in my opinion.

  34. K.... L....

@mikewtp personal. fav apart from this song. get "White Light, Rock and Roll Review'!

  35. M.... ....

    @HoodyBoy85
    this one yo!!

  36. S.... W....

This goes out to everyone: What are some of your favorite songs? Always been curious.

  37. R.... R....

This song gives me goosebumps :)

  38. b.... ....

I had this playing in the background just now, while I was searching out other stuff, and it dumbfounded me. The male brain can only take so much stimulation, as we know. and this song is SO good it just drained my cranial CPU of its ability to function. Well, that and the wine I drank.

  39. b.... ....

@mikewtp I agree with jcdriol. I've been a huge fan since his first album, but Hospital Music is his masterpiece.

  40. S.... G....

This and while we were hunting rabbits are my favorites off this album <3

  41. M.... ....

@jcdriol I'd say start with Underdog and Beautiful midnight. But you want acoustic. You should really start at the beginning to be honest.

  42. P.... ....

@jowston100 I Totally agree, it's probably some asshole who likes pop music

  43. j.... ....

I would like to punch the one person who put a dislike.

  44. B.... S....

@mikewtp Avalanche and Beautiful Midnight is probley his best work

  45. m.... ....

@rgopp Thanks for all of the recommendations! You fans have truly helped me enjoy yet another great Canadian artist. I'm going to see him live in July at the Ottawa Bluesfest. Should be a great time!

  46. R.... ....

    @mikewtp
I'm almost jealous. To experience it all for the first time will be exciting. Matty Good is nothing short of amazing. Make sure you listen to EVERYTHING you can get your hands on. As jcdriol said, Hospital Music is a great place to start, as is Vancouver.

  47. 1.... ....

try blue skies over badlands........and go from there...............most of his songs are amazing

  48. h.... ....

Take this Song everywhere with you, it will keep you moving forward, wise and honest.

  49. a.... ....

    Magical....only way to describe it.

But who keeps downthumbing all the comments.

  50. B.... ....

While saying that though, I don't think he's ever had a better intro than "K-I-C-K-A-S-S, that's the way we spell success".

  51. B.... ....

Beautiful Midnight was a weird album for me. He DID have some amazing songs on there (and you actually listed exactly all the songs I like off that album). But there were a lot of songs I really didn't like. The radio hits in particular and especially Load Me Up. I don't know why so many long time fans love that song, I always thought it was really subpar to what the man has potential for, both lyrically and musically. Whereas on Avalanche per se, every song, except maybe Double Life, is great.

  52. t.... ....

I wasn't really into matthew good or matthew good band, i didnt mind his music but once i listened to avalanche fully(the album) right then and there he became one of my favorite artist's. his music is something rare to come across. in my opinion i guess.

  53. B.... ....

    I agree with you.

Matthew Good's stuff with the band was too similar to other bands in the alternative grunge genre at the time, like Our Lady Peace and I Mother Earth. There were some good songs from those days, and I like that band better than pretty more than their contemporaries.

But his solo stuff is much more diverse, unique and meaningful. I think Hospital Music and Avalanche are his best.

  54. D.... B....

in addition. For older stuff, I think beautiful midnight is fantastic.. even though it's matt good band and not solo

  55. D.... B....

also get vancouver. Beautiful orchestra sound to it and very meaningful lyrics. You can really tell he's political and intellegent through it was well. It's his newest one next to hospital music

  56. L.... v....

I really do not know why, but this song means so very much to me. It's such a beautiful song, it always makes me wanna cry and smile at the same time. I get a really unique vibe/feeling from it. This one should be heard on my funeral.

  57. M.... ....

I'd start with his older stuff and move your way up. Underdogs and Beautiful Midnight for sure.

  58. S.... B....

@mikewtp Personally, I started with the Avalanche album, and I loved it. A lot. Like jcdriol said though, Hospital Music is excellent as well.

  59. m.... ....

    Thanks!

  60. m.... ....

I am just getting into his music. Are there any recommendations on where to start? I am more inclined to like acoustic-centered songs like the beginning of this one. Thanks!

  61. t.... ....

    isnt matthew good Bi-Polar?

  62. A.... K....

    0:01 and on is amazing

  63. P.... ....

Matthew Good is good at English, why don't you follow his footsteps and don't keep us wondering what the hell your trying to say

  64. P.... ....

    got that right

  65. L.... v....

Yeah, I can see where that's coming from and I guess I kinda agree with it, though it does break the... how do I put it in correct English? well it's a heavy song in my opinion and the movie dialogue does break that a bit, which is sometimes very welcome to me. Depends on how I feel when listening :)

  66. S.... ....

I would agree, I read once from a secondhand source that he felt this was his opus. Easy to justify if it were in fact a truthful statement.

The ONLY black mark on the whole thing in my book is the movie dialogue excerpt. Woefully outta place in this masterpiece.

  67. L.... v....

One of my favourites, without a doubt. Such a good song, everything's perfect about this one.

  68. M.... H....

    3:35 and on is amazing

  69. c.... ....

What the hell are you talking about eric?
