Goldsboro, Bobby - Summer (The First Time) Lyrics

Was a hot afternoon
The last day of June
And the sun was a demon
The clouds were afraid
One ten in the shade
And the pavement was steaming

I told Billy Ray
In his red Chevrolet
I needed time for some thinking
I was just walking by
When I looked in her eye
And swore it was winking

She was thirty-one and I was seventeen
I knew nothing about love, she knew everything
I sat beside her on the front porch swing
And wondered what the coming night would bring

The sun closed her eyes
As it climbed in the skies
And started to swelter
The sweat trickled down
The front of her gown
I thought it would melt her

She threw back her hair
Like I wasn't there
She sipped on a Julep
Her shoulders were bare
And I tried not to stare
As I looked at her two lips

Then she looked at me, I heard her softly say
"I know you're young, you don't know what to do or say
But stay with me until the sun has gone away...
And I will chase that boy in you away"

Then she smiled
And we talked for awhile
Then we walked for a mile to the sea
We sat on the sands, and a boy took her hand
But I saw the sun rise as a man

Ten years have gone by
Since I looked in her eye
But the memory lingers
I go back in my mind
To the very first time
The touch of her fingers

Was a hot afternoon
The last day of June
And the sun was a demon
The clouds were afraid
One ten in the shade
...

    The P.C. world. So sad. I don't give a shit, it's a great song.

  6. A.... 1....

Funny, when this first came out I loved the melody, always have. Now as I listen I can only say the woman was a child molester. She'd be in prison. Bobby, you did make an interesting song.

  7. A.... ....

    Just Awesome...

  8. D.... S....

Was a kid when this was a hit in the uk 1973,a few years later i knew what it was all about, I never encountered "the older woman",a great song, tucked away in my memories.

    D.... S....

I was 18 yrs old in 1973, I'm from Charleston, West Virginia, USA. I remember this song well. Saying goodbye to my cute blonde haired, brown eyed girlfriend, who was 17 yrs old. It was a very hot day in June 1973, I left for boot camp with the United States Marine Corps. We had nothing in common with this song, except saying goodbye, and we listened to this song numerous times, we loved this song. To this day I remember her every time I hear this song. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant.

  9. R.... C....

like every thing bobby sings fantastic

  10. J.... G....

I have a deja vú with this song when I was very young (several decades ago) today I have almost 70, those things that occur to you I started in my head to hum a song and it was taking shape until I forgot, on some occasion time Then I heard her on the big radio, it was my surprise when I discovered that the chords were the same, I could not believe it, maybe I had not listened to it, it is not something I still cannot understand, on the other hand the melody is beautiful.- Thank you for uploading it !!

  11. S.... M....

So many memories of my Mum listening to this on the radio, she ended up buying the 45. I grew to love her music - still do.

  12. B.... C....

I remember this song like it was yesterday in 1973.It has always been one of my favorite songs. I had my first real girl friend in the summer of 1973.When the back seat of my parents 98 oldsmobile was being used by her and I this song was blasting on AM radio. What memories. They don't write songs like this anymore...

    B.... C....

I was 18 in 1973. I too, remember an old girlfriend. Going on dates in my 1967 Mustang. Great memories.

    S.... C....

I was 18 yrs old getting ready to leave for boot camp with United States Marine Corps. Saying goodbye to my cute blonde haired girlfriend who had the cutest brown eyes. Great memories during those last few days before I left for boot camp.

  16. M.... F....

The song lyrics sound like they are loosely based on the movie SUMMER OF 42.

  17. G.... D....

Approaching 2020 and I still listen to this. Fond memories of my Ma and Pa , may they rest in peace

  18. S.... T....

What a fantastically atmospheric song. You can almost feel the sun burning your skin. Pure class.

  19. B.... C....

This guy sounds like those few who always do their homeworks, never late, & wake up early. Recepi for success.

  20. T.... T....

So good. It evokes many memories and emotions that I had almost forgotten..thankfully, not.

  21. S.... H....

This is the only BG song I like. It's so evocative of how summer feels and the sultry background piano at the end is great. Brings back memories...

  22. J.... W....

    Never forget your 1st time

  23. l.... ....

    sublime

  24. T.... K....

...FYI: here's a famous Dutch version of this song, telling the same story... In Holland is was a bíg hit... :-).

This song is so beautiful and sexy as hell! Me

  26. j.... b....

one of the best songs of the 70s

  27. c.... k....

paul kerrane another song from the seventies sat in a tank on the east west border .

  28. r.... r....

recuerdo con mucho cariño este bello tema summer lo escuchaba en 1974 , y ahora me trae muchos inolvidables recuerdos de cuando yo tenia 12 y 13 años recuerdo mi primer amor flor de maria donde quiera que estes te amo.

  29. R.... H....

I'm 62, heard some great songs, But the world is a different place today, I'm so glad I was born in 57 and heard so much great music, This song comes into that class..

  30. L.... G....

I was four when I first heard this. being the youngest of eight my music rangers all genres & eras. Lucky me to have such an enormous range of fantastic music to listen to every thing from 1940 my mum n dad to now, Must agree with Bill Wellington Totally true

  31. S.... M....

    Aural caviar.

  32. R.... C....

What a beautiful song and in another world what a sensual video one could make to match this.

  33. g.... h....

Takes me back to a far better time than we have now.. This is brilliantly arranged work of art. My feelings are that it's like listening in 3D .. Sounds of nature, scent of a woman, and innocence ready to fly away on the breeze !

  34. D.... S....

I was thirteen years old when this song became popular in 73. I had taken my first job as a clerk in a convenience store and can remember mopping the floors while listening to this song! I used to think about how "lucky" the subject "boy" was to have been seduced by an older "gal!" The lyrics are surprisingly haunting!

  35. t.... p....

The strings are fantastic and I can recognize the 'sound' from other hits after - this is a great track, massively under-rated and un-appreciated - the piano answer back hook just grabs me. What a vocalist

  36. p.... ....

I'm 65, and I remember, every word ...Wonderful

  37. R.... C....

I listen to this song back in 1973 and was just a teenager starting to think of girls and having a big crush on a school girl that used to be on my school bus but went to a different school wow bring back those days and every time I here this song my mind goes back to those wonderful days of being a teenager thank you for so many sweet memories.

  38. J.... J....

I loved this song and just thought of it again today - the "forbiddenness" of the story intrigued me as a teenager. The construction of the song is what I would call sensual for lack of a better word. It sure fired my teenage imagination!

  39. L.... E....

    A masterpiece exquisitely beautiful.

  40. J.... S....

    🌺 Just Fabulous.
    One of my very favourite
    songs. 60s 70s 80s
    best music ever from
    these decades. Oh to go
back in time, even just for
    a day. Dream.

    J.... S....

Joyce when you find that time machine, txt me. I'd love to return to the 70s when this was a hit. My favorite Bobby Goldsboro song was "Honey" then this. I miss the late 60s and 70s.

    J.... S....

    My gentle pit bull
I don't know where you are from
but I am an AUSSIE. 60s 70s and the 80s music and way of life here , was just the best. No PC
Bullshit, no alphabet of genders, just us girls and the boys and fun times. Hope you had the same.

  41. F.... D....

Today's youth is fucked because they won't be.

  42. R.... M....

This was a hit when I was 14 now I'm 65.Still great to listen to!

    R.... M....

All due respect sir. This song was recorded in the late 60s but not released until June 1973. The words were to controversial for the late 60s. So who ever, waited until 1973. I thought the same until I looked it up on Google. When we were 13 and 14 yrs old the song "Honey" came out in 1968..✌🇺🇸🎹

    R.... M....

I heard it coming from the early tranny radios that had 4 transistors tuned to Radio Caroline pirate ship stationed off the coast of Suffolk when I was 14ish and camping at Walberswick Tent Site. This was before the BBC radio 1 and 2 started and radio north sea international, which was forced to close down when customs put a fire hose onto the transmitter aerial while the valves pumped out thousands of watts of music!
It seems that your government was tighter than ours here in Blighty (UK)
at that time! There was no FM/ VHF and only medium wave and long wave.
As you know the medium wave propagates globally on the gray path at dusk and it was picked up in South Africa and Rhodesia whilst their police
went on Immorality Patrols to stop the corruption (and race mixing).
Bet that was fun, but who for?

  43. s.... a....

From the opening what poetry ....

  44. g.... ....

Great song but I preferred 'Hello Summertime' and the original Coca-Cola theme it was based on from Summer '74

    g.... ....

It was released June 1973, I remember it well. I was saying goodbye to my cute girl friend, leaving for boot camp to become a United States Marine...Parris Island, SC. Man this was a great song. Miss the 70s.

  45. G.... C....
