Goldsboro, Bobby - California Wine Lyrics

A cold December day
I saw her on the highway
I said I'm headed west
She said your going my way
Then she got in with me
Somewhere in Tennessee
She snuggled up close to me
She kissed me and then she said

I want you to take me to my California wine
She said I got to get back where the bright sunshine
And then she turned my head around like California wine
And then she smiled at me and put her hand in mine
And poured me a cup of wine, sweet California wine

She said she thumbed all day
Been in West Virginia
She said I'll make a trade
For all the love that's in ya
I can sit and talk to you
Share a cup of wine or two
And I could be good to you
She kissed me and then she said

I want you to take me to my California wine
She said I got to get back where the bright sunshine
And then she turned my head around like California wine
Then she smiled at me and put her hand in mine
And poured another cup of wine, sweet California wine

We chased a fading sun
And watched the shadows falling
And as we sipped the wine
I heard California calling
And she was good my dear
And it became very clear
I shifted into second gear
I kissed her and then I said

I'm gonna take you to the California wine
I said we got to get back where the bright sunshine
And then she turned my head around like California wine
And then she smiled at me and put her hand in mine
And poured another cup of wine, sweet California wine

she could be a wineo or a winier.

this has to be one of the most underrated songs ever. It stands the test of time. I had just got back from my first holiday in California as a naive 20 yr old, Aussie and it was on his TV show here. It still gives me goosebumps 44 years later. What a talent.

This album also had a great rendition of "Lizzy and the Rainmaker".

  5. L.... ....

Just played it again.  Fabulous.  It would be nice to hear something like this nowadays.  A very underrated talent, in both song writing and singing/music.

A correction to the lyrics would be nice - it should be "I want you to take me to the California line." and I'm gonna take you to the California line"

Thank you for posting this beautiful song of B.G.'s! As it's been stated, unfortunately it wasn't the smash hit "Honey" was, but those of us who were in Calufirnia at the time it came out had a VERY SPECIAL appreciation for it and for Bobby! He was such a great guy!

Nice song---but if one accepts the lyrics literally, isn't the driver in violation of the open-container law?

  9. d.... ....

Agreed, he had many little known hits. He was a much better singer than he was ever known. Sad thing how some great singers can get little exposure, and some pittiful singers can become super-stars...

BG fan forever, not a week goes by that I don't stop, listen and appreciate the man, singer, songwriter, entertainer, good person he is.

  11. L.... ....

Very nice. Great song. I'd love to have the tab or the chords or anything on that. I can't find it anywhere.

My radio show emanates from PA. It is a country formatted FM station but allows a six hour Saturday night window for older stuff. I'm quite proud of the show as it gives listeners in our part of the Commonwealth, Delaware and Maryland...and anyone who picks it up streaming on the worldwide web, the opportunity to hear the music others have forgotten...much of it is the 'roots' of country. The 50's, 60's up through the 80s. A good mix if I must say so myself. Thanks for asking!

    yes, good one.

certainly one of the better songwriters of our time. his words always painted a vivid picture for me. this song is a favorite of mine and of listeners to my radio show. it was never a big hit, but should have been.
thank you for thinking about it and including it here.

Bobby Goldsboro is sadly remembered for dreck such as "Honey" instead of great stuff such as "Brand New Kind Of Love," "Summer the First Time" and of course, "California Wine."
