LM's phrasing modernizes the song. It's a very schmaltzy song and has to be done with a lot of control. Bette Midler knew that, too. Always disliked the piano plunk, plunk, plunk.

my grandmother passed away 2 months ago and my aunt sang this at the funeral.... it was kinda funny when the Bishop introduced her to go up and sing he accidentally said my grandmother's name and (to make light of an awkward moment) my aunt put her hand on the coffin and said take it away mom 😂

Oh this is so hard to listen to.. I grew up with this song. It was one of the first songs my mom taught me to play on piano.... she passed away a few years ago.. I can't believe Glee covered this. Lea did an amazing job but I could only listen to a the first line and had to mute is as I post this. Beautiful song and bittersweet in so many ways. Great Job Lea!!

if you don't like it thats one thing but "she ruined it" and "terrible version" is stating your opinion as fact which is arrogant and unnecessarily ruining a lovely common section. It would be fine to say "I don't like this version bc xyz but I appreciate her vocals" or whatever to eep a positive vibe. If you have kids you should get this

Sounds pretty but lacks that raw and angsty sound that only Bette Midler can produce singing this.

this is a very pared down version, just designed to showcase her incredible talent

i don't know how to feel abou t this song...I love her vocals on it and only Rachel could sing this ballad so sweetly, but even though they try to be original on GLEE with arrangements, I think they took too much out..its much more powerful with the background vocals and melodies BUT to sing it like this also makes it quietly powerful and passionate..so i am about 50/50 on this one.. ?

Love the song and love Lea singing this, but this is a terrible arrangement. Part of what makes this song amazing are the harmonies and it's been completely wiped away.
