If you think this was 'stolen' from Sonic Youth, you're dumb. It's a basic chord progression. And it's noisy. That doesn't even come close to plagiarism. Anybody could've come up with that w/out ever hearing Sonic Youth.

Yeah, the verse progression does sound like "Mote" by Sonic Youth, but the song is still quiet different.
And I like both.

Listen to their entire album before judging them based off one song. They're diverse with genre; you could literally hear inspiration from genres throughout the decades (folk, whatever Zeppelin was, garage rock, soul, surf rock, and so on). In this case, the song somewhat fuses 2 different types of 90's alt rock (a shoegaze tune sandwiched between abrasive, Sonic Youth-like riffs). Sounds a lot like "Mote" off of SY's Goo, but no complaints here.

Good for you. Just as long as you don't listen to any Synthpop, Indietronica, House, Trance, Techno, Chillwave, or any other CRAP like that than whatever. I'm gonna go listen to Hot Boyz, Magnolia Slim, C-Murder, Pimp Daddy UNLV, Juvi, Wayne, Turk, BG, Mystikal, Skip, Wacko, etc. Y'eard meh whodie?!?!?!

@adamLqt Are they trying to sound like 90's guitar bands, or are they just playing louder and more aggressive than what people have gotten used to in indie music today? Maybe they are, maybe they aren't, but does everyone have to play to a standard that's currently "hip"? I think every genre of Independent music that's hip today sounds like something that's been done before in some kinda way, it's just that the loud ones are always the ones people call the "copycat" bands. No music is "new".

@hubert1199999 I disagree, music is in my opinion a state of emotional expression so using some one elses riffs or sampling their music defeats the purpose but then again you could argue that a band covering another band's song would be doing the same thing... I guess you are right to a certain extent, small samples are okay but using a riff for an entire verse i'm sorry but for me thats a no no.

@groovey65 I have to agree though, the opening guitar riff sounds exactly like the intro guitar riff of Mote (makes me wonder if it was intentional or coincidence). I personally don't care though, I wish people were actually more open to people using other people's work to make their own. A lot of people get sued for sampling music, or making collages from other people's artwork and I think that's bullshit.

Every musician tries to sound a little bit like their influences, that's how music evolves. I mean, might as well say every rock band is stealing from blues, Elvis, or the Beatles.
