Gin Blossoms - Lost Horizons Lyrics

The last horizons I can see
Are filled with bars and factories
And in them all we fight to stay awake

I drink enough of anything
To make this world look new again
Drunk, drunk, drunk in the gardens and the graves

She had nothing left to say
So she said, 'She loved me'
I stood there grateful for the lie

I drink enough of anything
To make this girl look new again
Drunk, drunk, drunk in the gardens and the graves

Turn summer trees to bones and ice
Turn insect songs against the night
With words we build and words we break
I'm drunk, drunk, drunk in the gardens and the graves

Maybe I could use you to reassure myself
I wouldn't wish this indecision on anybody else
I drink enough of anything to make this world look new
And when sin smiles, how could it be wrong?

The last horizons I can see
I now resigned to memories
I never thought I'd still be here today

I drink enough of anything
To make myself look new again
Drunk, drunk, drunk, in the gardens and the graves

The last horizons I can see are filled with bars and factories
and in them all we fight to stay awake...
Drink enough of anything to make this world look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves

She had nothing left to say so she said she loved me
I stood there grateful for the lie...
Drink enough of anything to make this girl look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves

Turn summer trees to bones and ice
Turn insect songs against the night
With words we build and words we break
I'm drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves...

Maybe I could use you to reassure myself
I wouldn't wish this indecision on anybody else
Drink enough of anything to make this world look new again

And when the sin smiles how could it be wrong
The last horizons I could see are now resigned to memories
I never thought I'd still be here today...
Drink enough of anything to make myself look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the grave

Another sadly beautiful song by Doug Hopkins.

    1:21 beautiful picture

  4. S.... O....

Mega talent, Doug Hopkins, after years of battling chronic depression and alcoholism, committed suicide on December 5, 1993. Surely this song is illustrative of his brilliant but clouded perspective of the world. One can only hope he is seeing clearly, not in a mirror dimly, and experiencing joy now and forever more.

  5. G.... R....

I think they took DH's songwriting credits after he was out of the band.

    G.... R....

They had to do that, otherwise some slimeball lawyer would've wound up with the songs, publishing rights, royalties ,etc. It was a terrible tragedy. Doug Hopkins was a brilliant guy & a great guy. But he was his own worst enemy. He had incredibly low self esteem & never realized his true self worth. Those other guys tried their best to help him, but he didn't want to help himself. So sad. All that talent wasted.

  6. w.... ....

But none of the pictures show Doug Hopkins: The guy who started the band, named the band, and wrote this song and Found Out About You And Hey Jealously and Pieces Of The Night

    w.... ....

    They did Doug wromg.

  7. w.... ....

The ironic thing is Doug Hopkins isn’t in hardly any of the Gin Blossoms photos & videos, yet he started the band, he named the band, and he wrote their greatest songs

Pictures tell 1000 words, we can see that as the slideshow progresses

wildmercuryfilms sucks hey? great band but they owe everything to Doug

  9. J.... M....

drunk drunk drunk in the Gardens and the Graves.. I take that as: we started in the Gardens of Eden and we end up in Graves, and and I have to stay drunk to deal with what happens in between the garden and grave. Life is two dates and a dash.. the day you got here and the day you left. the dash is the middle aka your life

  10. R.... ....

Bands like this were inserted into the 90s to fuck with the real music that was happening at the time. Nirvana, Offspring (Smash) Green Day (Dookie). Hearing this still pisses me off after 25 plus years. These guys should have quit while they were ahead.

  11. w.... s....

I never thought I'd be here today...Well, he isn't! Was this song his suicide note?

  12. J.... M....

we gave this album an 8.5!

  13. e.... r....

its so nice amazing gin blossoms for ever!!!

  14. D.... T....

I have the words "When the sin smiles, how could it be wrong?" tattooed over my liver with a Comedy/Drama masks...

  15. J.... F....

Ha ha, what's up with Dean and Robert DeLeo at 2.09?

  16. S.... K....

This is one of those that makes me cry for no reason. Every time.

  17. R.... ....

This is their best song and sets the tone for the album perfectly.

  18. f.... ....

RIP Doug Hopkins. It isn't always just drugs that steal the great artists. Sometimes it just takes a bout of depression and alcoholism to lead someone down that final, terrible path.

    f.... ....

frozenaorta Alcohol is a drug too it's just legal, anything that alters your mind or body is a drug.

"The last horizons I could see are now resigned to memories / I never thought I'd still be here today"--story of my life, folks. *sigh*

  20. W.... P....

And if you are truly an alcoholic, this song's lyrics will repeat the truth: Drink enough of anything to make ____ look new again. Fill it in. I did.

    W.... P....

    Make this world new again

  21. J.... V....

    oplay with THURSDAY!?

  22. M.... B....

My favorite GBs song. It never gets old, even after a quarter century...

    M.... B....

God, has it been that many years? How is it possible? I remember this album like it was yesterday.

  23. D.... D....

love it!! have y'all ever performed in Mexico?

  24. W.... P....

Brilliant lyrics, some of the best......

  25. a.... ....

with words we build and words we break.....

  26. S.... J....

This is probably the best song on the album.  Damn shame the geetarist was such a raging alcoholic and got kicked out before they all hit it big.  The band pretty much sucked without him writing the songs.

  27. C.... H....

She had nothing left to say...Perfect

  28. R.... R....

    Mister Doug Hopkins: died on the cross for his ungrateful band's sins! ; {

  29. R.... R....

I do still romantically wonder where "the gardens and the graves" are down there in Arid Zona – especially as one Michael Feria of Mesa, a bright inborn womanizer, relieved me of my virginity one night in 1993! (And then a second time as well, right after my nineteenth birthday party in 1994)!

  30. R.... R....

    Copied-out lyrics missing some words there, eh? ; {

  31. R.... R....

    BY DOUG HOPKINS – WHOM ROBIN WILSON MURDERED BECAUSE HE NEEDED HIS LIMP DICK TO LOOK BIGGER! ; {

    R.... R....

bitch what the fuck are you on?

    R.... R....

If you know this for certain, based on eyewitness experience, I suppose you have the right to type this. If not, why are you? What does it prove? Who benefits from such a calumny?

  32. N.... L....

You guys (uploader included) realize that Doug Hopkins is dead and these pictures are all of the band after they had a new guy?

    N.... L....

    Nope: THEY have NO idea. You and I, on the other hand, will NEVER stop grieving over the sheer abject cruelty, bloody murder, and depraved robbery. ; {

    N.... L....

    Plus I'm quite sure I'm madly in love with him despite his being so very physically dead... (Bet I'd have an awful lot of female competition there!). For him to have ALSO penned and sung "One Hundred Summers", the absolute most divine New Wave song I'd NEVER EVER heard – until today???!!! Just weeping about him and talking to his photos a lot now, feeling his personal torture and depth resonate so deeply, for the last few days. I was a massive "Hey Jealousy" fan in my freshman year of college (1993 to 1994.) But I had ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE as to whom he was... and that's what makes it all SUCH a crime (lookin' at you here, Robin/Bill/Jesse)! ; {/; }

  33. M.... S....

Clinton was president he presided over the execution of a man having an 80 I.Q. I think Doug Hopkins responded to the brutality aspect of American life. BAN MACHINE GUNS!

    M.... S....

    Yup: that he did – a lot. And his band, in gratitude, killed him over the favor he did them! ; {

    M.... S....

Cars and water kills thousands every year. Let’s also ban cars and water!!!! Idiot liberal....

    M.... S....

What kind of retarded comment is this?

    M.... S....

The fuck do machine guns have to do with any of this. Take your agenda elsewhere.

  34. M.... S....

    Doug Hopkins thank you.

  35. J.... S....

She had nothing left to say so she said she loved me. I stood there grateful for the lie.......I love these guys.

    J.... S....

    Tom Sanchez Indeed!

    Jeff Silverman no one cares

    J.... S....

    Been there done that...

    J.... S....

Genius lyric! Going to see them do NME in its entirety in 2 weeks. Can't wait!!

  37. C.... S....

The guy who wrote the lines committed suicide.

    C.... S....

    Affects you, dude.

    C.... S....

Me too exactly. I was in college...

    C.... S....

PS: NO OTHER female fans? Bizarre.

    C.... S....

You can hear it coming in these songs.

    C.... S....

    Doug Hopkins. RIP.

  38. m.... ....

    And when the sin smiles
    how could it be wrong?

  39. l.... ....

Oh I forgot to mention that the guitar bridge at 2:05 is one of the best ever laid down.

    l.... ....

    +lebarosky - on which song?

    l.... ....

Yup; it sure is. Too right, you are, about the gorgeous misery of alcoholism. Hopkins was a supreme talent!

    l.... ....

    do you mean at 2:50?

    l.... ....

    I think he means 1:39

  40. l.... ....

If you want to know exactly how it feels to be a chronic alcoholic this song says it all. Perhaps that is why GB don't play it that often. Brilliant piece of music with heartrending lyrics.

    l.... ....

I'm baffled by the logic of your sentense - GB'ers are wonderful alcoholics - they should make this the anthem!

    l.... ....

No, it's an utterly beautiful song in all respects. It also reflects the ultimate deep sadness of true alcoholism. Think of it as your personality and soul fracturing. It's not actually funny.

    l.... ....

The original guitar player wrote it, Doug Hopkins...He was a chronic alcoholic who killed himself shortly after the albums release. It is a beautiful song, and tremendously sad.

    l.... ....

lebarosky I drink enough of anything to make this world look new again drunk drunk drunk

    l.... ....

It's not only that.... It tells the tale of someone who isn't an "alcoholic " per se, but is traveling down that same road..... Because the truth is..... The rest of the feelings are human.... They are occasionally more honest than we prefer to use in polite company, but even the best of us is familiar with the worst of us, and with that great grey plain in between....

  41. b.... ....

One of the best Pop/Rock voices of all time!!

  42. m.... ....

"Maybe I could use you to reassure myself

    I miss Doug Hopkins.

    m.... ....

    I agree

  43. D.... G....

saw them live in a street concert. Fabulous. Real rockers and great lyrics. And, I too, get the line of being grateful for the lie - in her case, lies...

  44. w.... w....

This is my favorite Gin Blossoms song. Oddly, they seem to underplay it. They made no video of it and no karaoke version was released.

I said this before. I always kind of thought that this song was my song. It was my secret. I never told anyone about it, never mentioned it.
It was like when Husker Du were still kind of new. They were our band . A girl I knew said, "It's like a cult." Alot of the phrases strengthens the next one.
