Gilmour, David - Love On The Air Lyrics

Love on the air
I keep transmitting but reception is hazy
I don't get an answer
Keep sending it faster
Always knew it was crazy
To put my love on the air.

No one will hurt me again
No one will cause me to lie
No one will control me by pain
No one will cause me to cry
I was looking for love
In wandering eyes
Like a ship trying to fix on a beacon
I learned how to sigh
On the ribbon and wires
It's a habit that's so hard to weaken

No one will ever manipulate
Make me promise to do or die
No one can make me hesitate
What can I lose if they try
I was looking for love
Like the very first time
Didn't realise love never left me
Contradicted - conspired
I connived and designed
Nothing on earth could arrest me.

Reception is hazy
When you put your love on the air
Always knew it was crazy
To put my love on the air
But I only communicate
When I put my love on the air
You don't have to consummate
Love on the air

Written by Townshend, and realized by Gilmour. However, does anyone else hear a very Jackson Browne-ish vibe here as well? I'd love to hear Jackson cover this (as well as Deacon Blues' "Loaded").

This is what happens when you pair David Gilmour and Pete Townshend. Such vulnerability and depth. One of my favs. A beautiful song.

  16. R.... T....

The song Perfectly describes the way I felt the last 6 months maybe a year not about love of a woman or loss of a woman but as far as relationships with people in general I'm so afraid of being hurt again I'm alone because I'm afraid to let people close even those that I truly respect I don't even want to talk to you because I'm afraid that it would end up bad

In my "PF playlist" with two other songs they wrote together -- "All Lovers Are Deranged" and the title track (sort of) to Pete's concurrent album "White City Fighting". Thanks a lot for uploading the album!

  21. S.... D....

This song is great because it shows the resolve of someone who has loved and been hurt and manipulated in the past by love, yet they still try.

  22. G.... P....

Slept on the pavement all night in front of Specs Records, in order to be first in line for tickets for this show, circa 1985. All night long, homeless guys and drunks would pass by and ask if I was alright and what I was doing. "David, who???", was the response. This song brings back vivid memories of that night. Nabbed second row seats and got to see my hero from a distance of about ten feet, in that small theater. Long live Dave!

    G.... P....

    Great tune!!!

  30. Z.... G....

Can someone explain what he means by "the ribbon and wires"?

    Z.... G....

    typewriter and radio?

    Z.... G....

Damn late to reply....but computers...….wires and older computers had what they called "ribbons" - grey, flat "wires" in a group to "pin patches." Pete Townsend always understood the power of computers and the internet.

  31. R.... L....

    All Lyrics are from Pete

  32. B.... A....

    Townsend influenced many.........
Gilmour's guitar and voice transends that, Townsend would agree.

  35. P.... A....

I recited the chorus over and over again after ending bad relationship after bad relationship almost like a soothing prayer "no one will hurt me again, no one will cause me to lie, no one controls me by pain, no one will cause me to cry"

    P.... A....

Here's an even better one for you by Gilmour/Samson in regard to that: "I took a heavenly ride through our silence, I knew the moment had arrived, for killing the past and coming back to life"

    P.... A....

I'm sorry, but are you fucking kidding me? This is the guy that, ten years wrote Shine On You Crazy Diamond? The same who, 7 years earlier, played the gut-wrenching, eye and butthole clenching, mind-blowing solos on Animals??

    m.... ....

He also teamed with Pete Townshend from The Who on this....BUT you have to give both a pass. As the previous reply says, this was the 80's. It's not really their fault lol.

    m.... ....

Have you ever LISTENED to one of Paul McCartney's solo albums (or Wings)? It's the same problem. Without Lennon / Waters, the other guy goes all soft.

    m.... ....

Have you listen to Roger´s "Radio KAOS"? It´s the 80´s!

    m.... ....

butt hole clenching Americans are real sickos

    sweet. thanks for sharing luv

  44. J.... L....

One of Pete Townshends' (The Who) greatest lyrics -- coupled with one of David Gilmour's most beautiful melodies & vocals. This song would definitely fit on a Pink Floyd album -- it's beauty & intenseness is equal to anything Pink Floyd did. "It's a habit so hard to weaken...." Wow.

  45. J.... L....

I did the same Nicky with a Down Syndrome boy -- I wasn't responsible for any personal care but he spent time with me. Seems he loved it when I sang doo-wop songs to him when he was agitated. So many -- he numbered them & ask by number. He'd get upset. Need a time-out. He'd walk over to me & whisper No. 7. That was "Be Bop-a-Lula." He'd smile, calm down. He'd often try to sing too & his pronunciation improved. He had many favorites. I miss him because in many ways, he was wiser than all of us.

  46. C.... ....

    wrong...Murder was written by Pete

  47. b.... ....

A truly great album. Never understood why it is so overlooked.

  48. G.... F....

this song was written by Pete Townshend...

  49. j.... ....

This is a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing some much needed humanity.

  50. D.... J....

David Gilmore at his best. Love Pink Floyd...even Syds stuff....been a fan for decades.I think I have purchased 5 copies of Dark Side Of The Moon. haha :) David has a soothing voice, if that is the best way of putting it...:)

  51. N.... ....

No one will hurt me again. Somewhere out there is a planet named Gilmour. This is where I wish to spend the rest of eternity.

  52. c.... ....

ONE OF MY FAVOURITS! FANTASTIC SONG!

  53. o.... ....

    Only wish there was more

  54. G.... C....

It is beyond my comprehension how anyone could dislike this.....

  55. N.... N....

Love should be like David Gilmour music, be good to everyone. . .

  56. u.... ....

love is free , love should be all that we are and ever will be

  57. n.... ....

How could one Moron not like this???

  58. d.... ....

Always loved this song even played at my dads funeral ..

  59. a.... ....

One of the nicest songs in existence. I dunno, it just has that certain "quaintness" to it. :-)

  60. n.... s....

the way this song fades out, its a lot like on the turning away. the organs and heavy drums give such a sad feel thought the lyrics have hope, and the music fades into a sad, dark, dreamy path into darkness

  61. n.... s....

i have been called a pink floyd fanatic. its a good thing to obsess over. their is so much magic in this group of people and thier music and shows.

  62. n.... s....

i used to sing this song for a disabled little girl i took cara of. when i gave her a bath, i would sing and she would relax when normally she never liked baths. when i sang her this song, i could even give her a shower. something she also normaly hated. butthis song and no other always calmed her. miss you so much lexi. most beautiful child i ever cared for.

    n.... s....

How absolutely moving and beautiful. Thank you for sharing your story and feelings for that child and this song. It made me cry. ❤️🙏🏻

  63. J.... L....
