Gillian Welch - The Way It Will Be Lyrics

I lost you awhile ago but still I don't know why
I can't say your name without a crow flying by
I got to watch my back now that you turned me around
Got me walking backwards into my hometown

Throw me a rope on the rolling tide
What did you want it to be?
You said it's him or me
The way you made it, that's the way it will be

It was seven years on the burning shore
With Gatling guns and paint
Working the lowlands door-to-door
Like a Latter Day Saint
Then you turn me out at the top of the stairs
You took all the glory that you just couldn't share

I've never been so disabused, I've never been so mad
I've never been served anything that tasted so bad
You might need a friend any day now, any day
Oh, my brother, be careful, you are drifting away

Throw me a rope on the rolling tide
What did you want it to be?
You said it's him or me
The way you made it, that's the way it will be
The way you made it, that's the way it will be

  8. J.... R....

Gillian and Dave still got it! There is something special going on here, as always. Keep making that medicine you two... EDIT: Dave should put a ring on it eventually, but let it simmer slowly like Skully and Moulder from the X-Files. LOVE YOU GUYS

    That’s why it’s called a gift.

  10. P.... J....

everybody apart from me seems to know the deep meaning of this song, but I know that there is a deep meaning as its so beautiful p.s. what is it?

  11. M.... ....

blown away every time I watch this.

  12. D.... C....

Half the people listening, the other clattering their knives and forks and chatting. It just goes to show, the world is divided into two kinds of people, those that can appreciate beauty, be it music like this, art, literature a glimpse of a majestic animal. Then there are those oblivious to music, to whom art is an investment, books are for lazy people with too much time on their hands and an animal is for lunch. Or maybe they couldn't hear at the back!

  13. D.... D....

    lovely harmonies and picking

It's so great to see the audience getting into the music. I've seen so many performances that just moved me so much, but the audience are in a stupor, or looking a their watches.

  40. K.... W....

    perfection

  41. f.... l....

    Fan fuckin taskit

  42. M.... R....

    Thanks, JT. I needed that.

  43. D.... K....

I've always been intrigued by this type of performance. The true, raw talent really comes out and is so much more apparent in this kind of intimate setting. Two people with two guitars, just relaxed in a cafe, sounds like one guitar and one voice, so effortless. Amazing and inspiring.

  44. l.... d....

This reminds me of lunchtime at Merlefest, NC USA 2000. I'm in love again in 2019, and it's from Sweden - thank you!

  45. D.... B....

These two are so good they make me weep.

  46. B.... S....

Is that Kacey Musgraves in the crowd?

  47. K.... M....

"I've never been so disabused, I've never been so mad; I've never been served anything that tasted so bad."

  48. J.... S....

Love this song of pain and sorrow! Especially about throw me a Rose! I use to sell and design bouquets of Roses! Miss those days!

  49. B.... C....

    slowly the crowd quiets down...

  50. L.... S....

Gorgeous! Discovered by pure chance when a buddy posted it on FB. Reminiscent of some of David Crosby's stuff to my ears.

  51. f.... l....

kinda sad that musicians as awesome as this aren't more popular...maybe its for the best

  52. A.... T....

Totally enthralled by this. Were the background people actors put there for a bit of scenery? I just can't believe that anyone could sit there at a table chatting and with a back turned to such a performance.

    A.... T....

Read the description.it tells you who they are.

  53. Z.... W....

What a great birthday , listening to these great performers have listened for years thank you,

  54. g.... ....

For me, this music gets right to the Bone of things. It is pared down to what is elemental. They have taken away the goo gaw that is unnecessary and kept the things are essential to communicate authenticity. Yet there is nothing about this music that is easy. It is hard to get to the bottom of things. Ask any poet, artist, or musician.

  55. O.... S....

probably the best video of all time

  56. R.... W....

It's pretty good.....not life changing like some of you act.

    R.... W....

life changing has nothing to do with music, but tell me anything that is written like this?

    R.... W....

    Not for you.

  57. M.... S....

    Outstanding!

  58. M.... C....

90 deaf people gave this thumbs down

  59. K.... M....

Veronica Maggio looks close to tears. That's how I feel every time I hear this.

  60. j.... s....

Dave Rawlings is such a great guitarist!

    j.... s....

    why is there no hole!

  61. D.... &....

  63. f.... l....

    Fuckin great

  64. J.... N....

At age 65 I have been blessed to hear one of the finest live acoustic performances ever. Thank you both.

  65. H.... L....

83 thumbs down who only deserves to watch the muppets

  66. T.... S....

    Sublime!

  67. l.... ....

A finger pressing on a bruise. Such tender pain....

  68. b.... ....

Id like to move to this song and start a family, whats the zipcode?

  69. f.... l....

  70. L.... T....

The blonde Germanic Lady is feelin' it, as are we all.

  72. c.... w....

    incredible

  73. j.... ....

Oh My God this song just grabs you by your soul!

  74. f.... v....

once in everyones life someone comes by and blows you away with their performance. This happened to me with these two musicians.Heavenly music Gillian and Dave !!!love and respect.

  75. m.... ....

From a self confessed blues/rock guy this absolutely incredible. So emotional. So intense. So musical. So beautiful. Wow!

  76. N.... R....

Delightful from beginning to end. Thanks.

  77. B.... A....

This is too good for human ears to cope with.

  78. T.... C....

    Damn that's beautiful

  79. T.... B....

When they switch voices after the four minute mark, who else could do that? It's just astounding.

  80. l.... ....

I saw them 20 years before this. Always amazing.

  81. M.... F....

Exceedingly Beautiful! They vibrate within each others' souls...

  82. A.... t....

I am struggling to think of another duo whose voices meld into one so perfectly, godDAMN.

  83. d.... k....

She could sing the phone book and it would sound good.

  84. O.... S....

The harmonies are unbelievable! This song is the benefit of making music together for many, many years.

  85. H.... S....

They should be on a stage with an audience that actually appreciates the skill and beauty of their talent.
    Wonderful song and vocal harmonies.

  86. D.... ....

I can't believe this was recorded live, it's too good

  87. D.... B....

These two are best musician-singer-composers since the Beatles. Look at how they face into one another, look at one another, and become one singer and player. They sing this piece in unison during the verses; they are perfectly in tune. They nail their pitches again, again, again. Their harmonies melt my heart. Wow!

  88. E.... B....

    wonderful ...

  89. E.... B....

Yeah, I’ll take a Turkey with Provolone and a Diet Coke and a bag of chips

  90. F.... ....

These two work some beautiful duets, no question

  94. U.... ....

    Bangin'.

  95. L.... O....

This is a profound moment in space and time.

  96. S.... M....

Wonderful song, cheesy fake emotion on swedish artist's face

  97. A.... B....

    Very nice! Bravo ;)
