Gilbert O'Sullivan - If I Know You Lyrics

I should have known from the start this would happen
From the moment we went anywhere
If other women so much as looked at me
You'd be screaming blue murder, I swear
And yet you say that my leaving doesn't hurt you in the least
But even if that's true
You'll do all in your power to destroy me
If I know you

You never once in the time spent together
Even loved me with half of your heart
Okay you gave me the world and I took it
But I was young then and eager to start
And yet despite you declaring, you understand the way I feel
Now that we are through
You'll do all in your power to destroy me
If I know you

What on earth possesses children to abandon fairytales
Are we simply getting old
Or as parents have we just failed

I never stopped wanting you for a second
In all the time I was with you I swear
But I will not spend my life with a woman
Who thinks that love is a state of affairs
And yet you say you're not bitter, we had one too many years
But even if that's true
You'll do all in your power to destroy me
If I know you

What on earth possesses people
To destroy each others homes
Are we really all as bad
As the TV cameras have shown

You say how much you respect what I'm doing
You say how high you regard my ideas
And yet for years as I stood in the background
You never once let me up off my knees

A brilliant tune. Gilbert O’ Sullivan is easily the most underrated singer songwriter ever.

On reading the intro, I thought the Ooh Wakka Do Wakka Day type stuff was too commercial, and loved the more detailed music. I read with interest about this album "Life and Rhymes". I just may go get it on factory produced original CD. (The MP3 and streaming just does not have the quality for decent Hi Fi listening).

+Dennis Rhodes Lcc You wouldn`t regret buying it Dennis . To this day it remains one of my favourite albums . Here`s another sampler that features IF I KNOW YOU and two other tracks . There are some great up-tempo songs on the album as well and the very last track comes as a complete surprise and is pure genius . https://youtu.be/sCKZrfCSdyU?list=PL9jZpetYhwhPoOOmUvFrLfXoEjb3MtPtV

It doesn't matter that some of Gilbert's songs are commercial they are still some of the greatest comments on everyday life!

OMG! I never heard this song from Gilbert. Never thought it was in him to do a song that I think was even ahead of and before Phil Collins signature sound. Primo! Each new song I stumble upon of Gilberts anymore is sort of like "it's my birthday". A gift each time. Thank you, Mohawk for posting this.

This is an great song, musically, and lyrically,,, but,, it's a little dry,, and it's probably Gouldman's vision here,, but it could have been slightly more orchestrated, with the background filled in for warmth, because love songs, both happy one's, or sad,, should always keep us within the range of emotions that speak of love, either lost,, or,, found! Sadly,, with the 1980's came a departure from the "heart felt" writing style, and in it's place came "a distant detached form of writing.

It's hard to believe how I take Gilbert for granted.I have all his music and yet when I see videos like this, the song hits you right between the eyes..I intended to add why or to whom the song was written for but that was so powerful to watch, I couldn't..Brilliant!
