Gilbert O'Sullivan - I Love It But Lyrics

I love it but it doesn't knock me out
I think it's great, but it could be better
I like it a lot, it's just not my cup of tea
Yet if you were to change the melody
Take out a part that you think should be here
Put in a part that wouldn't otherwise appear
Well it's only an idea.
I hate it but that doesn't mean it's bad
In other words I quite enjoyed it
Apart from which, it's the best you've ever done

Yet if you were to change the words
It would be superb with perhaps a different melody

I love it but it's just a shade too long
Though to be fair you'd hardly notice
The only thing as I say is how it's done
Bits to me sound like it ought to have been sung
Not only in two part harmony but one
Making the whole thing really swing before it's swung
Walk instead of run
I love it, but it doesn't knock me out
Yet it you were to change the words
It would be superb with perhaps a different melody.

I love it but it doesn't knock me out
I think it's great, but it could be better
I like it a lot, it's just not my cup of tea
Yet if you were to change the melody
Take out a part that you think should be here
Replace it with a part that wouldn't otherwise appear
Are you getting the idea
I love it, but it doesn't knock me out.

This is absolutely mind-bogglingly superb. My language does not have enough adjectives to describe this man's genius. And his live performance here is beyond fantastic. He feels and lives every note and every word of this timeless composition. Raymond Sullivan continues where other artists consider the job done (2:58). He is a unique artist with no par on the planet and this song is an underrated masterpiece. It should be a UNESCO world cultural heritage. I'm not exaggerating, I know what I'm talking about. I am not a fanatic, I am a peer admirer.

A song so typically Gilbert , but having said that also a true gem . You have to listen to the Off Centre version to appreciate this , where the guitar parts are combined with orchestration , and the piano / keyboards provide a really effective intro and outro .

And where can I possibly listen to that?

@PianoGesang Hi , The original studio recording can be found on Gilberts " Off Centre " album , now available on cd or download . Regards

@WILLIAM SIMS Thank you. Does it differ from the regular studio recording? I have an old RCA tape "The very best of GOS" with the song on it.

@PianoGesang Hi , It was on a tape that I first accessed this song myself . In the CD and Digital era , naturally there is now more clarity and no tape hiss . It has also undergone remastering .In answer to your question , the studio recording however remains the same .The live version shown does not include Gilbert `s trademark orchestration, which adds an effective enhancement to the song .

@WILLIAM SIMS Ah ok, thank you for your efforts. Then I probably have the studio version on tape (I remember it well) just not re-mastered etc. Anyway I will try to get a hold of the Off Centre version. I'm a long-standing admirer of Raymond. And after 45 years of being mesmerized by his art I met him in person a few days ago and had a quick chat with him. He was kind and polite. Very humble guy and in great shape, musically and physically. I was so impressed... once more! He has a unique brain.

LP Off Centre was pure creative rock, probably his best album, difficult to find in Youtube. Forget Claire, Alone Again and What's in a Kiss, Off Centre has something much more interesting! Many great songs.
