Gil Scott-Heron - Song For Bobby Smith Lyrics

[Spoken]
I know a young warrior named Bobby Smith
He's gonna be 4 years old on his next birthday
He happened to be with Brian and I when we wrote this song
It's about new life and new spirit, new feelings
We asked Bobby, "Bobby, what should we call this song?"
And he said, "Oh that's pretty, that's my song."
That was very appropriate, this song for new life should be about Bobby
This is 'A Song for Bobby Smith'

[Sung]
Ain't you been there?
Ain't you goin?
Can't you taste your ideas growin?
We are soldiers
Soldiers of a new day
Can't you see it?
Can't you feel it in your heart?

Ain't you been there and ain't you goin
To a place where friendship's flowin?
We are brothers
Brothers and sisters in spirit
Can't you see it?
Yeah, can't you feel it in your heart?

Ain't you been there?
Ain't you goin?
Can't you take this love I'm showin?
Got to be you and me
You and me together
Can't you see it?
Can't you feel it in your heart?

long live gil and his music through out his life R.I.P, R.I.P

someone commented 2 yrs ago (ok, just saw it!) that Gil was a mediocre singer, I totally disagree w/ that observation. Gil had a low baritone, but he knew how to use it to tug at, at least MY heart strings on a variety of different songs doing solo or duet/harmony vocals. this song was 1 of the first where he became such a unique influence vocally.

    T.... ....

TheRealTommyRock I strongly agree with you. It's what he is saying, and how he is saying it that makes him a special talent

    T.... ....

He was not a singer he was a spoken word Artist
The call it rapping now but this was spoken word in the 70s

    T.... ....

his voice is absolutely incredible, so rich. Mediocre - heaven help us

    T.... ....

It's not even about that. If you have a problem with the singing on his tracks you can't feel the soul.

as this globe turns and turns and wars forever resound and both the young and old are victimized, brutalized and reduced to homelessness...very little changes.I got introduced to Gil's music in 1971 by my big brother in London-by 1976 we were jamming and covering his songs in bands in south east london pubs...silence prevailed in the muted crowds-numbed by Gil's articulate summary  not only the 'black human condition in America'...but the 'human condition' of all nations- all people'.He was a mega star forever bringing light and hope into this forever self destructing soulless void.

  17. s.... ....

Bobby Smith Should be about 45yrs. old now I wonder if he really understands the impact he had on Gil, Brian, & many others with this song. God Bless you Bobby where ever you are & Thank You Gil for all of the great & inspirational music you left us. Peace go with you my brother & Vaya con Dios.

Gil wasn't no singer, he had a mediocre voice, but that didn't matter, because he spoke the truth, and the truth resonates with all intelligent peoples, he was a stylist, like Billy Paul, he used his limited range to the best of his abilities, and the message took over from there. And, the message was powerful and still meaningful today. Peace be upon you Brother, where ever you go.

  27. b.... ....
