Gil Scott-Heron - Pieces Of A Man Lyrics

Jagged jigsaw pieces
Tossed about the room
I saw my grandma sweeping
With her old straw broom
She didn't know what she was doing
She could hardly understand
That she was really sweeping up..
Pieces of a man

I saw my daddy greet the mailman
And I heard the mailman say
"Now don't you take this letter to heart now Jimmy
Cause they've laid off nine others today"
He didn't know what he was saying
He could hardly understand
That he was only talking to
Pieces of a man

I saw the thunder and heard the lightning!
And felt the burden of his shame
And for some unknown reason
He never turned my way

Pieces of that letter
Were tossed about that room
And now I hear the sound of sirens
Come knifing through the gloom
They don't know what they are doing
They could hardly understand
That they're only arresting
Pieces of a man

I saw him go to pieces
I saw him go to pieces
He was always such a good man
He was always such a strong man
Yeah, I saw him go to pieces
I saw him go to pieces

  1. r.... ....

    Powerful ,
    Thought provoking ,
    TRUTH.

In ALL ways, rest my brother.
    Thank You.

  2. T.... E....

Absolute favorite by Gil. So profound

  3. A.... W....

this man was truly an underrated artist - I don't know why he's not inducted into the Rock And Roll hall of fame. Or is he???? Some one talk to me.

  4. D.... W....

As that of any brilliant artist- Gil Scott-Heron, someone I've loved so much.all my life, his work touches everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, whatever - I'm white, 62, Gil's music will always touch my soul...

  5. h.... ....

I agree with most everyone here in the comment, and as I was wiping my eyes wondering why allergies struck me now my eyes answered "because the song is a song of the soul caught in a slow burn", and I will never miss this great American poet. Gil Scott Heron will always stand as on of our greatest gifts to the world of poems sung so true, and what is true never gets old. But, I do miss every part of this man.

  6. E.... D....

His son is Lyfe Jennings. The saga continues. And the drama.

  7. E.... D....

I say all the time. " cant break me mf, im already broken".

  8. R.... V....

"The revolution will not be televised"
    "4 more years of this?"

  9. J.... T....

One of the few people in this world. I whould love to have to spoken to in depth.

  10. R.... R....

" I saw him go to pieces" was my theme in life for too long. My life was in pieces because of bad habits. I use to say that I was in fractions; fractions of a man long before I heard this compelling, enlightening song of life. When I stop my destructive lifestyle and not only felt but experience my life coming together, finding inner peace, that's when I discovered by mistake mind you- "Pieces of a Man" by Gil Scott-Heron and thought this song is about my life and how God has given me a chance to put all the pieces together. Yes this song brings tears of joy and sadness, not only about my life but the many people who because of certain situations saw their life break into Pieces. But it's never too late to put your Pieces of a Man (or Woman) back together again and never forget the words, music of this beautifully constructed song by the late, great Gil Scott-Heron.

The most underated black American artist of all time. I'm a white English guy and I came to Gil late in life because his artistry was never highlighted here in the UK. Fantastic artist. I posted whitey on the moon on my FB page to highlight the fact that the space race took place against the background of the civil rights movement.

  25. F.... S....

It’s funny how it’s 2019 and his songs still reflect what is going on today. The Truth never expires.

I don't know if anyone reading this has ever had anxiety, or any other mental illness and it got really serious‎, to the point that you felt like no one/nothing can help you feel better? Suddenly the lyrics to this song make a lot more sense. Such a sad song

  75. L.... P....

Lovely song a real family pleaser x

  76. C.... L....

This song really hit home, because it really express what men are too prideful to vent out. Even if the situations in the song doesn't match up with what every man goes through, every man has gone through something that taken a piece of who they used to be.

    C.... L....

    Carone Lloyd No question....

    R.... W....

This song absolutely pulls at one heart knowing what many of our black men had to deal with in this country. This brother put it right out there.

    R.... W....

I hear ya, When I listen to this song, it is hard to hold back the tears.

    R.... W....

    ...sorry.

    R.... W....

May we as fathers be a better version. They try hard to break us dont they?

  80. D.... F....

On the pain of "All folks in pain", with all due respect...

  86. S.... T....

  87. g.... c....

....she was really sweeping up, pieces of a man. Saw my daddy meet the mailman, and I heard the mailman say"Now don't you take this letter too hard now Jimmy , they laid off nine others today"

    g.... c....

    brilliant man

    g.... c....

I'm not sure if he was as brilliant as he was experienced. Life and the lives that the author of our favorite songs can be a motherfu@@er

    g.... c....

    Hope things are better

  88. T.... G....

brother Gil left many pieces of a man for us to come together as a people - can YOU piece together the rest of the puzzle?

  89. A.... E....

"She was really sweeping up pieces of a man..." Ancestor Gil was truly a gifted poet and musician who dedicated his life to creating and sharing social justice songs. Unemployment, racism, destruction of our environment... Sadly, these issues have worsened since his passing. One Love...
