Gil Scott-Heron - Grandma's Hands Lyrics

Grandma's hands clapped to church on Sunday mornings
Grandma's hands played the tambourine so well
Grandma's hands used to issue out a warning
She say, "Scotty why you run so fast,
Might fall on a piece of glass,
Might be snakes there in that grass?"
Grandma's hands, they keep on calling to me.

Grandma's hands soothed the local unwed mothers
Grandma's hands used to ache sometimes and swell
Grandma's hands, lord they'd really come in handy
She say, "Bobbie why you want to whip that boy?
What you want to whip him for?
He didn't throw no apple core."
Grandma's hands, they keep on calling to me.

Grandma's hands soothed the local unwed mothers
Grandma's hands used to ache sometimes and swell
Grandma's hands, well they really came in handy
She say, "Bobbie why you want to whip that boy?
What you want to whip him for?
He didn't throw no apple core."
But I don't have grandma anymore
When I get to heaven I'll look for grandma's hands.

Gil Scott-Heron Grandma's Hands Comments

Of the many artists produced in the Americas, Gil Scott-Heron is by far one of the least credited. Perhaps many would say he was too radical or others may say he was years before his time, but the truth is Brother Gil was on time at the right time. Whether one of his originals or a sample of some other artists material, no one, not anyone contributed such a volume of pure raw artistic excellence at this brother did.

WOW , what a great review..well said, my Brother.....I must say though, that a few , like Fela Kuti, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley...John Trudell..all masters of expression in artistic excellence.... have come close, but no one did it quite the eloquent way he did.....driving home such a strong message...with each song, .with such grace and beauty....inspiring us all to think a lot about the reality of the world we find ourselves in....and what we need to do to change it for the better....

The Godfather of Rap, a poet and a genius.. Saw him play seven times in London during the 1980s - we followed him from gig to gig..This is even better than Bill Withers' original (in my humble opinion)..

First true original RAPPER  mostly his jazz here on this lp   but there are others which are 60%+ RAPP   his words are so true and CLEAN  without all the negative input  that we get from modern day hip hop artists

Vernon Hirsch I agree, you just stated things like they are

  19. B.... ....

If Tupac was living and singing instead of rapping today, this is what he would sound like. Tupac and Gill Scoot held similar political views.

    B.... ....

Nah Tupac went backwards associating with thug life. He had similar views to gil. yes, but he was less of a voice of the people in fact gil was still around but past his prime during tupac's day

  20. b.... ....

i bought this album back when it first came out...by this time, his studio work had become very polished...that rawness prevalent in earlier recordings was gone...BUT the message here is more powerful than any slick production value. ahead of his time...ahead of his mind.

  21. M.... D....

a true hero of the masses, man of the people,a true socialist. right wing usa would send him to internment then if they got away with it. ahead of his time. rest in peace
