Gil Scott-Heron - A Prayer For Everybody / To Be Free Lyrics
This is a prayer for everybody
In the world
'Cause I need you and you need me
We need each other
In the world
A prayer for you
A prayer for me
A prayer for love and harmony
A prayer for light for all to see
A prayer that someday we'll all be free
'Cause...
There's a lot that's wrong
We must be strong
If there's a chance
That mankind will profit
Why should we scoff at something new
Or old - if it can make us better?
This is a prayer for everybody
In the world
'Cause without you
And without me
Without love and harmony
Without courage and dignity
What would it mean
To be free?
[Instrumental: To Be Free]

This is a prayer for everybody in the world
‘Cause I am you and you are me and we need each other
This is a prayer for everybody in the world
A prayer for you, a prayer for me
A prayer for love and harmony
A prayer for life that all may see
A prayer that someday we’ll all be free
‘Cause there’s a lot that’s wrong
We must be strong and not become bitter
If there’s a chance that mankind will profit
Why should we scoff at something new or old
If it will make us better?
This is a prayer for everybody in the world
‘Cause without you and without me
Without love and harmony
Without courage and dignity
What would it mean to be free?
[Verse 2: Gil Scott-Heron]

Without love and harmony
Without courage and dignity
What would it mean to be free?
What would it mean to be free?
To be free?
To be free?

May God bless your heart, thank for the lyrics so much.
this is one of the most beautiful meaningful pieces of music ever created...I especially like the Rhodes and the sax solo at the end...

"..if there's a chance that mankind could profit, why should we stop at something new OR old if it will make us better..", Universal wisdom. Thank you, Gil...I saw you perform B Movie in Kalamazoo at WMU 25 some odd yrs. ago and had the best seat in the house. May you rest in peace..
This is a prayer for everybody in the world
'Cause I am you
And you are me
And we need each other
This is a prayer for everybody in the world
A prayer for you
A prayer for me
A prayer for love and harmony
A prayer for light that all may see
A prayer some day we'll all be free
'Cause there's a lot that's wrong
We must be strong
And not become bitter

Why should we scoff at
Something new or old
If it can make us better?

It sure ain't easy, but remember it wasn't easy for Gil (and with him soo many others) either. It will always be a struggle, but keep on struggling. It's the only good fight there is and it's the only way to become happy... I guess.

a classic RIP Gil
When I heard he died, this was the song I wanted to hear. Thanks for the upload. An era is over.
My heart cries to see how telling the truth can beat you down. But STILL I RISE and keep the hope, dream and message alive by telling everyone I know of this GIFT from GOD, a simple but complexed young man who by way of going to college gave us all a "free" education on life and living. Peace go with you my loving brother, Thank you always.
Blessings to you my Brother Gil. I've enjoyed your music since I was a child. You are in my heart and in my prayers. Thank you for your gift to us all through your music.
