Gil Scott-Heron - 95 South (All Of The Places We've Been) Lyrics
In my lifetime I've been in towns
where there was no freedom or future around.
I've been in places where you could not eat
or take a drink of water where ever you pleased.
And now that I meet you in the middle of a mountain
And all I can think of are chapters and scenes of
all of the places we've been.
I'm not such an old man so don't get me wrong.
I'm the latest survivor of the constantly strong.
I've been to Mississippi and down city streets,
I've seen days of plenty and nights with nothing to eat.
But I'm not too happy 'bout the middle of a mountain so
soon I'll be climbing again.
'Cause all I can think of are chapters and scenes of
all of the places we've been.
I was raised up in a small town in the country down south
so I've been close enough to know what oppression's about.
Placed on this mountain with a rare chance to see
dreams once envisioned by folks much braver than me.
And since their lives got me to the middle of a mountain
Well, I can't stop and give up on them.
'Cause their lights that shine on inspire me to climb on
from all of the places we've been.
From all of the places we've been,
From all of the places we've been alot of places, yeah
From all of the places we've been,
Been down, been down, been down, alot of roads and places
All of the places...

Gil Scott-Heron 95 South (All Of The Places We've Been) Comments
Saw Gil & Brian at the Quaker City Jazz Fest at the Tower Theatre in Philly in the 70s. Patrice Rushen, George Duke, Ronnie Laws, Lenny White were there too. BEST SHOW I EVER SAW!!!
My friend said he saw him at his collage UT Knoxville TN. I regret I never saw him in concert. L Love this song. Reminds me of my Mother who told me stories of the KKK coming to her boarding high school in South Carolina. I love all Gil and Brian's music.
Absolute & utter brilliance !!!

My Moyo-Gil Scott Heron. In Loving memory!

where there was no freedom or future around.

And now that I meet you in the middle of a mountain
Well, I'm reaching out from within.
And all I can think of are chapters and scenes of

A Revolutionary Salute, or as Comrad Zayd Malik would say, Zalute, to GSH for his carrying of the torch in this long, meandering road to our National independence. i was a young man, a boy really, when he turned me onto the strugle in Azania(S. Afrika) with "Johannesburg". Than his "IN The Bottle" brought to light alcoholism. Then he just kept at it and iam, today, a better Human because of his contributions to the culture. Zalute!
Superb track
This song has always touched my heart. It perfectly encapsulates the feelings of hope for the future and reverence for those who went before us and struggled and even died for our rights. If only this type of message were being promoted more to our youth of today.
I want too thank you for uploading Brother Gil Scotts music although I have all his music from 1969 to present. You have done a Great Service by uploading this music for all to enjoy. I say listen and hear the message he left us. This Brother will missed but never firgotten my grand children will now and sing his music. Peace goes with you Brother.
@4444nomad Thank You for this one. I truly MISS Brother Gil.....His sweet voice is 4ever embedded in my heart.
Love & Blessingz ~
GSH's amazing ability to provide link between political messages and universal sensitivity
What an interesting song--a time capsule of what it was like being black in the United States from the 1940's to 1980. This ought to be required listening in high school US history courses
especially for those clueless among us who keep wondering,"What do they want anyway?" RIP GSH, we shall not see your like again very soon and that is our loss not your's.
